The way that 'Christine' charts the ups and downs of stress-triggered depression is fantastic. It is savvy enough to take its time to show how perceptions and reality can differ and merge in the mind of someone who is unable to cope with the path that their life is leading; for that person to occasionally feel euphoria when they think that they've turned a corner, only for the inevitable low when reality hits home; for that person to fall into disconnection with the people around them and self-inflict mental wounds; for even the smallest thing to trigger an episode of mania; and for the potential for that person to inappropriately reach out to a foggy world erratically with tragic consequences. All of this is shown with rare compassion, and played very well indeed. Not a movie to watch if you're not feeling great about yourself, there aren't many light-hearted moments, but it's quality drama and I'd highly recommend it. 4/5
Andy G Your review was very well put together in words, and insightful. I agree. The movie is so realistic that I was so dumbfounded on how real, and true the depression and loneliness is portrayed in this movie, because it was so relatable to me, and my depression and loneliness I have. And you worded it right, especially when you said, "for the person to occasionally feel euphoria when they think that they've turned a corner, only for the inevitable low when reality hits home." When you said that, it really made me feel like, wow, that is so true, I always go through that.
Rebecca Hall here gives the most impactful performance of the year. This movie made me cry in that sort of "I'm so anxious that I can't quite process everything because this feels exactly like depression and anxiety disorder" type of way. One of the best movies of 2016, no doubt.
The fact that she wasnt nominated for the oscars just blows my mind.
Carl Rees for sure. I didnt agree with many things about these nominations but this was by far what bothered me the most. Pretty sure they didnt even watch it.
Have you seen the film?
I agree. Was also not wowed by the other nominees. I feel like the best performances got forgotten. Such a shame. For sure supporting actresses are stealing the show this year
Was the question for me? I saw the film yes!
basquat76 if you think that manchester by the sea is the most depressing film ever you are probably not a fan of drama as a genre. I personally absolutely loved it and didnt care much for la la land for example. The prizes are not meant to be focused on the happiest and easiest films to watch
I loved it, she was robbed of nominations
One of the better movies of the year, really underrated.
Best performance of the year.
This is truly a great performance. You start out with this seemingly confident, head strong, intelligent woman who knows what she wants but the cracks start to show and her trajectory downwards is heartbreaking and frightening.
An utterly brilliant and brutally underrated film that honestly left me completely gobsmacked by it, absolutely stunning film.
Oh baby, this is just what I wanted to hear. That movie had such a hold on me well after I had finished it. As amazing and gripping as Rebecca Hall was, she didn't overshadow any other performance, every actor/actress held their own. Really tight movie.
That short clip, alone, just floored me. Can't wait to see it
Ron Burgunderry. Classic.
Cant believe she wasnt even NOMINATED for her performance here. Emma Stone's performance in La La Land has nothing on this.
I COULDN'T EVEN WATCH "LA LA LAND " PERIOD!!!! CHRISTINE SHOULD HAVE WON A GRAMMY!!!!!!
@@suestone6156 You mean an Oscar? An actor can’t win a Grammy for their acting work.
@@BCS1105 WHATEVER YOU SAY!!! I'M NOT INTO HOLLYWOOD! ALL I KNOW SHE WAS BETTER THAN THE OTHER ACTORS!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE CORRECTION B.
this was a really good movie.
I just love the clever little turns of phrases that Mark slips into his commentary that could just as easily go by unnoticed but contain a great deal of wit and wisdom. It's one thing I really admire about Brits -- perhaps more specifically Londoners -- is that sort of understated, unglamorous, unfussy, plainly spoken regular intellegence that nonetheless sparkles with radiant truth and humour when you stop to admire it. I think Brits do it without even realizing they do it, it's such a natural part of their everyday conversance that it's done almost automatically, subconsciously, but it's nonetheless a delight to behold to someone who is relegated out to the colonies where subtle intelligence and dry humour is on real short supply, much to the detriment and depravity of the local population.
What a nice thing to say
An amazing movie about loneliness.
Travis Best *and depression, but especially the depression within having loneliness.
A great film. A future classic. It's subject matter couldn't be more relevant.
This movie was very dark towards the end Depression is real
So it's not about a killer car? (sorry...)
This looks very intriguing, seeing it tomorrow.
Charlie Panayiotou Lol I thought of that movie too.
You mean the Stephen King movie?
favorite film of the year
Been waiting to see this for about a year. Unfortunately it isn't playing in a cinema near me but the Blu ray is out in a couple of weeks!
I watch very few contemporary movies these days. I watched this one and it blew me away. To begin with it was not true crime E-Ghoul porn. It portrayed the pain some of us are driven too really well. I don' think they realized what they ended up with but they nailed certain facets of certain afflictions closer than in any other film I've seen. I did enjoy seeing the 70's vibe , I hung out with local TV/Radio people in the 70s. They were nuts , plenty of booze and weed as they dreamed up all kinds of crazy schemes. Christine's life arc paralleled the one of someone I knew... developmental problems, family spent unlimited resources on help, got them to the point where that could at first glance be ok out in society but the residual deficits caught up with them, they got in a black white tunnel and they could see no way out of the pain and died shortly before their 30th birthday.
I just watched this film.. Astonishing!! Released in 2 cinemas this weekend. Tragic.
Lols at "Ron Burgundary"
sadly to get an oscar is not a matter of quality only, the movie failed to built momentum on the box office side, difinately best performance by an actress this year, hopefully it becomes a great calling card for hall to get great roles.
Leading actor Rebecca Hall delivers A masterful performance in this well directed, shocking, realistic & stylish biopic. (91%) (4.5/5 stars) (positive)
This film isn't screened at my local theatres, not even Fact Picturehouse.
She did a better job than Natalie Portman and she played a Widower
More proof that the Oscars are all about the Politics rather than the performance
She is not a bad person though
Although, the cinematic aspect of it might be good, this movie suffers from the fact that it is yet another movie about a woman who is depressed because she might become barren. And rather than exploring Her past, since she went to a mental hospital, the director has preferred to put all the weight of the drama on that fact. And I thought the whole documentary part on how broadcasting in a local channel worked in the 1970s was not convincing at all.
these remakes are too far off from the originals
Josh VanValkenburg do you mean to insinuate that there are two films with the same title? I'm glad I'm wearing a corset, because I think my sides have split
What achievements or ideas did she have that made this story worth dramatizing?
She committed suicide live on air.
She is even more awkward than me
