That scary moment when you realize you've been screaming: "ME" while watching Christine. And I'm not even joking. It is so horrifying to think that I actualy realated to Christine in almos every single way.
Yeah, same here, it's a bit sobering. The closing people out, wanting things to be the way they "should" be while not really making a strong effort to make those things happen, and the unwillingness to accept that even if you do make that effort things aren't always going to go the way you hope. Putting that protective wall around yourself is unsustainable, it may work for a while in the sense that you'll be able to get by day to day, but in the long run it is very unhealthy mentally. It leads to massive depression and loneliness that will ultimately catch up on us one way or the other. Christine chose the darker way out, but the rest of us who find ourselves in her mental state still have a chance if we just open ourselves up to the world and accept it for what it is. Rebecca Hall nailed that performance... and it's a crime she hasn't been recognized for it.
Me too. I've had similar thoughts since I was 14, but haven't told anyone about it for.. 20 years now. It isn't so obvious to people as Christine showed it- although she was undoubtedly even deeper into depression than I am. I've done the same as her in shutting myself off, and I know it's not good for me, but I cant stop it. It was a really hard watch, but her performance was amazing- hence how hard it was I guess.
In complete agreement with Bibbs. I've struggled with depression for more than half of my life, and this film got it right. That is a huge rarity in this medium. And it's a great film outside of it's tough, realistic subject matter. I think Rebecca Hall gives the absolute best performance I've seen from 2016.
exactly! mental illness or even depression is glorified/romanticized in media. its not fun to have, its not fun to deal with, and it can really take a toll. everyone likes to think its easy to open up, but it isn't. its much easier to keep it to ourselves. because we can't grasp the concept that anybody could help us.
As I have had a few encounters with suicide. This move horrified me. I hurt for her. It had a really good feel of the 1970s even the soundtrack. Well worth watching and getting to know the story.
Its interesting how polarizing the opinions of this movie seem to be. Some people have said that its very boring, that they could barely sit through it and they couldnt relate. Others, like myself and William who gave it a 9.9 absolutely love the film. I borrowed it from the library and had never heard of it or the story its based on. was genuinely surprised by the ending. I have watched it four times now, catching new details each time. I just personally relate to it. I guess its true that unless youve been there you just dont understand. The movie reminds me just how imperative it is for me to maintain my mental health and continue to utilize all the tools and resources I have, and to never take my friends and loved ones for granted. Life is precious and we all need to feel loved.
I get the sense that when Bibbs gives this piece of insight, it's application to the movie is secondary: "But a very profound sense of empathy for someone in a very hazardous, dangerous, almost unthinkable mental state that would lead her to do something horrible, just horrifying." I think this is a warning to you peckerwoods out there who have been dogpiling on Bibbs for not fitting your conventional notions of how a movie critic should act and look like and sound. Let's all just reel it in a little how about, try a little empathy for a change.
Rebecca Hall deserves an Oscar nomination for this movie! It's worth seeing if you are into serious drama. A surprisingly benefit: the music of the early 70s, including John Denver. It's nostalgic, sprinkled with humor yet, not for the faint of heart. Loved it!
@@jennifer_m.8613Probably, but who knows? Most people would consider this movie too dark for a mainstream audience. Still, I am so glad I saw it originally in a theatre (I don't think the movie stayed there a week) and I have seen it on DVD a couple of times.
A small correction to a strong review of what I think is a very fine film: It was announced earlier this summer that the Chubbuck footage was in fact saved. For decades now, it has been in the custody of Bob Nelson, the then-owner of the station for which she worked, and following his death, his widow entrusted it to a "very large law firm" under orders that it not be released to the public.
The odds are given the age of the tape and the equipment it was used for nobody would be able to play it, anyways. It will have either degraded or nobody will be able to find a tape player because they're really rare.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I JUST FOUND OUT THE DR. SHE SAW, THE OBGYN WHO HAD HER ON HIS TABLE IS HER "REAL HUSBAND"!!!!! DR. PARSON HER HUSBAND IS MORGAN SPECTOR! THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!
I wonder how they got their hands on all the old equipment for shooting the film. The control rooms, kinescopes, quad tape machines, and other equipment look real too me. Pretty much all of that gear has been scrapped because it's more that 40 years past obsolete. People keep asking about the tape. The incident was recorded on Ampex Quad videotape, there are very few working decks left in the world. They were difficult to maintain back in the day and maintenance almost impossible now with no parts support. The tape itself, may be unplayable if it wasn't stored correctly as the tape becomes sticky and the oxide comes off. 40 years of storage has probably ruined it, and finding a machines to play it on is difficult.
To be honest while the tape exists I think it would be better that it degrades past the point of being watched. I don't see the usefulness in the video sticking around. We have a record of the event and now this film. I think it's enough. Hopefully it helps people understand people who struggle with depression better.
psiwire Lol I couldn't help but notice the woman's hair looks either like she just got out of the shower or has super greasy hair. And mind you I really am anticipating seeing this movie
I’m serious when I say this: this is one of the best biopics I’ve seen. I really Loved Hall’s performance. She felt so real with her portrayal that it felt like I was watching an actual person going through what Christine had and at the end, it hit me😢 Very great movie. I hope the people who made this continue to make more things.
If Rebecca Hall is as good in this more (and from the trailers and this review I would agree she is) then why is no one talking about her being in the Oscar race for best actress? Everyone is talking about Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga or Viola Davis... I will be very disappointed if Rebecca Hall is this good in this movie and isnt in the conversation when it comes Oscar time. Kind of like Brie Larson a few years ago with Short Term 12. You can not watch that performance and not tell me she should not have been up for best actress (lucky she got it a few years later for Room but she was just as good in Short Term 12. Kind of like how J Law was far better in Winter's Bone then she was in SLPB... Just saying!!!). She it just because it is too small a movie and doesn't get enough attention, person arent talking about her yet??? I hope this is like Charlize Theron performance in Monster. I only recently rewatched that movie last weekend and man I forgot how amazing she is in that. I can't wait to see this film, based on that review alone Bibbs. Not often a movie gets 9.9. I've been waiting for this film to come out for a year... ever since I heard they were making a "true events" story into what was the down fall of Christine's life. I love these depressing films too. Yes Ive heard she is very good in that movie and could get another supporting nomination, but it might be too "family" for voters. I know she has been busy doing her Star Wars work but I was really excited for her career take off after her "12 Years" win and it never really happened. I guess its really true when they say they don't want to cast "non white" women in lead roles… even if they have a freaken Oscar!!!
This movie was amazing. I'm still processing my feelings about it. Definitely recommend it to people who want something authentic and emotionally challenging. Also, I kept hoping I could change the ending... but alas.

oldmoviemusic I'm fully aware what I did, but thanks for trying to police my comment. They spoil this in the first minute of discussing it, if people are browsing comments before watching that's their own fault. You're supposed to watch then comment.
Its like a person going to see Titanic and someones like "Oh the boat sinks at the end" OMG SPOILER ALERT FCK YOU JUST RUINED THE WHOLE MOVIE. Spoiler alert: We conquered the United States Spoiler Alert: Hitler died at the end of WWI Hello? Its a part of history. Maybe not a significant part but I dont see anyone going into this movie saying "Who the hell is Christine anyway" Im pretty sure at least 80% of the target audience knows who this woman was beforehand and what she did. And anyway, the movie is about the emotions she was going through to get to that point. This isnt a M Night Shaymalan movie, there is no twist at the end to be spoiled. This is literally a biography about a woman who committed suicide
The fact she kills herself isn't what this is about. To 'hide' that to entice people in would demean the life of the person who this is about. This isn't meant to glorify her suicide. This is meant to focus on the troubles she faced and maybe help people have a little more empathy for those who struggle with depression. That and remind people how much harder it was for women back then. You're supposed to be made aware. Even if nobody goes to see the movie at least those watching the trailer will hopefully recognize that depression and suicide are very real things.
I was excited about the movie after seeing the trailer. I didn't know it was based on a real event. I didn't know she killed herself on air. Thanks for spoiling the movie within the first minute after the trailer went out of it's way to not do the same.
*facepalm* its literally a biography about a woman who committed suicide. A real person, its a part of history. I bet you got mad when someone spoiled the end of JFK for you (spoiler alert he got assassinated)
You guys should't assume everyone knows the story of Christine Chubbek. You're literally spoiling the entire movie in the first 10 seconds for people who don't know about her. Just sayin.
She was the Elliot Rodger of the 70’s...The only difference was that she could have easily found romance, if she wasn’t so overtly unapproachable, and could actually take a compliment, and not reject every advance from the start...According to the people who actually knew her, she was cold, unfriendly, and callous, in general. For her to commit suicide out of loneliness, and feeling unwanted...Well... I struggle to make sense of that, because she could have easily found someone, if that was her primary motive...
i mean elliot rodger was the same, he complained about not finding someone for a relationship but he was self sabotaging by being narcisisstic and unfriendly/offputting. he hated everyone around him who had the romantic aspects in life, i dont think christine had that same mindset. also elliot was more focused on sex and physical needs while christine wanted love and a family for herself more, which depression definitely gets in tge way more
Many are missing the significance that her liberal arts education/feminist indoctrination played in the feeding and growing of her mental illness . Think about it.

Why does Rebecca Hall's performance reminds of Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in 'Nightcrawler'?
Her performance here is more internally awkward and delusional whereas Jake's is more actively sinister.
That was in the back of my head when I saw Christine today.
Just finished watching and.. this movie really fucked me up.. like i'm kinda speechless
Did you see Kate plays Christine? It came out about the sametime. It was really good too. If you haven't watched it yet you really should.

And anyway, the movie is about the emotions she was going through to get to that point. This isnt a M Night Shaymalan movie, there is no twist at the end to be spoiled. This is literally a biography about a woman who committed suicide
Pozorrogo Equating a news reporter from the past to Hitler and The Titanic. Seems reasonable. Those are definitely comparable.
JFK was a world wide cultural event. Her death wasn't.
I tend not to Googlefu the plot of every movie for what should be obvious reasons.
Fascinating.
poświęciła się dla sprawy bo zrozumiała jak media zniszczą ten kraj niestety nadaremno
This that movie where the living car kills itself on the news?
Yep,same one, with the mom from Silver Spoons as well!!:)
HitchensImmortal NO.
Oh I was confused with the car film...
What the Fuck?!
Christine deserved someone better than the guy (Michael C. Hall) who she likes in the newsroom.
Come on! This should of had a SPOILER ALERT Warning on the title. The first thing he says is what happens at the end. Frickin' BS!!
Think about it.
they should have named it "Cujo." Ehh?
