His simplicity and purity of needing minimal is convicting and can make us all realize we don't have it all together. We need people like this. Cigarette Man is a massive eloquent story teller. The History of Skid Row was mind blowing. This one had several pearls of wisdom. As for you Mark, I didn't like your interviews at first. I thought you were weird especially the ones with the women sex workers. I thought your style of interviewing was trash. LOL. Then recently I watched an interview with you being interviewed where you said you were a Photographer who does Interviewer. Then I had more compassion. You are a Photographer. You let Cigarette Man Speak w/o interruption. This was special. He is a masterful story teller. And you have found diamonds in Skid Row. Well Done. We ought to meet each other one day LOL. We underestimate these homeless people.
Because they are not just homeless people,they are people period. We underestimate people!
I was homeless for 5 years, and also have been locked up. The wisest people I have ever met in my life have mostly been homeless people or convicts. The vast majority are not like this, many go crazy or turn into savages. But the few who don’t lose their mind mostly think and talk like this.
When you are homeless in an urban environment for a long time it makes you hyper aware of the world around you an the world at large, you also become hyper aware of peoples intentions and agendas. You become a very hard person to fool because psychologically and emotionally you have to be hyper aware and in complete control of your emotions and aware of others emotions, and body language to survive. You obsessively study people, situations and life in general. Because living on the streets full time in a major city in the US is like living in an active war zone. The treachery is off the charts, and danger constantly looms. You witness a brutal side of life many people never see. It’s very similar to being in jail or prison tbh.
A home does not make a person good or bad, 4 walls and a roof does not mean you are better then anyone else we are all just people

I wonder if this was the first time he's ever been interviewed? But his energy feels like he is def satisfied or relieved sharing his story with his own voice and experience, especially to an audience listening.
I can´t stand professional life coaches, and two in particular come to mind (Tai Robins). But this is a man who never went to school, and yet posseses knowledge that most don´t. He could have a career in giving lectures to inspire and motivate. I KNOW people would pay to see it, and a TEDx talk comes to mind.

The first thing I've ever disagreed on with cigarette man 😭 yes some people can think their way into depression or anxiety, but as someone who struggles with BPD on a daily basis and does every single thing to help myself stay afloat every single second of every single day, I 100% disagree with the notion that things like bipolar anxiety, etc are self-manifested.

I can easily imagine the Cigarette Man in one of Netflix's Black Mirror episodes. He would definitely play himself in a simulated world where wisdom is the panacea for all of the world's ails. Wish he sat Buddha like on an antique Persian magic carpet and his voice would waft through time's wormhole like the sound of a saxophone on a foggy misty night with a full orange moon providing the mood lighting. In the simulation, Cigarette Man would cure every participant on Soft White Underbelly that desperately needed help, just with the sound of his voice and from sharing a cigarette that contained the petals of the Lotus flower. Bossa nova and the fresh breeze of Caribbean waves crashing on a golden sand beach were also part of the computer simulation.
