My heart stopped when i saw this posting. These two gentlemen are absolute legends and it is a true honour to see them together and hear stories only they can tell. Wow. Your reach is admirable - I am sure they wouldn't have sat down with anyone else. Thank you for this valuable piece. Added bonus: matching ties!
Intellect, experienced men discussing their respective roles in important cases. Wonderful! I also loved the respect they showed each other throughout. Excellent interview, thank you Mark.
You can see the long years of effort and stress, triumph and failure etched into the faces of these men. They have character. Your NYPD videos are my favorites by far.
Chicago raised here and ditto, bet there are some stories there Mark! I noticed you move through LA, now NYC, there is some good meat especially in the advertising world of Chicago. Would love to hear from any survivors (usually young women from the time) telling those tales to you out of school!!
The quality of this work you do with these interviews; straight in a single chair, sparse background and the possibility for the interviewees to present themselves in their words; has a quality comparable to Walker Evans stills or perhaps some of Richard Avedons from Texas. They have a timeless quality. I would refer to it as art even. It takes great courage of you and the interviewees to do this. Thank you
These are the interviews that get me hanging on the edge of my seat. Nobody can deny the dark shades of grey in this world when this channel exists. Thanks for everything Mark.
I am gobsmacked to get to hear these amazing, experienced men talk about their life's work. Thank you for a fabulous interview. They're both "wicked smart" and cool beyond words.
Not being an ass, really just asking, isn't "wicked smart" more of a Boston thing? I've lived middle America my who life and this is just something I always was told. But I do agree, couple of smart older guys that seem to both be decent men.
Great interview, thank you guys. Being a New Yorker and coming from a family of law enforcement I really love hearing all these stories from back in the day. Much respect to both of you ❤.
I'm so happy you brought back Peter again Mark. I'm born & raised in NY & his life experiences really hit home. I've told so many people to watch his his episode. Looking forward to watching this one too. Thanks Gents
As a young women living in NYC back in the day, I will forever be grateful to Rudy Giuliani for cleaning it up and making it safe. I didn't think it was possible as it wasnt before and isn't now. Great interview from two fine professional gentlemen.
I could listen to Phil and Pete for hours. One of the best interviews on this channel. Two handsome, tough gents in suits and ties with fascinating stories. I'm not sure they make men like this anymore.
Loved this! A walk down memory lane, without the sadness that usually comes from SWU. These guys, along with what Giuliani did for New Yorkers is nothing short of legendary.
Pete’s last interview was phenomenal! It was so phenomenal that I’ve listened to it 3 times. He truly makes you feel like you were actually there when everything he talked about happened.
Wish you much fulfillment in your career. I hear about the no-bail releases, all these "progressive" types allowing criminals back out on the streets. What's happening?
Great story tellers. From casual observance Phil has the look and demeanor of the detective and Pete that of the reporter. So glad you got these two together. Plus... same tie? What are the odds...
What a fantastic point the newspaper man made about the origins of conspiracy theories. It is hard sometimes to know tragedy occurs due to the actions of a nobody and a big nothing for a motive.
Mark should make a playlist that’s focused on old school NYC story’s like the many cops , reporters , gangsters etc that we’ve seen in the last few years
Great interview from two people from a time when policing and journalism operated under much different standards. Really appreciate the nuanced details on the cases and stories that were national news at the time, especially when it runs counter to what was being reported. Excellent work putting these two together!
The whole Espteins conversation with these two Gentlemen still doesn't bring me any resilience on the negligence and failures of what has really taken place and any backdoor deals from Mr. Jeffrey Espteins untimely demise still does not resignate with me very well. I hold heartily believe that J.E had names he would mention upon being taken down by feds.
We need more! Love listening to these two.I'd also just like to add, your amazing mark! Been with you since the beginning & watching your channel grow has been awesome! Keep on keeping on.
The interview was fascinating. Nearing 70, my roots are in New York City, where I spent my childhood in Manhattan and Staten Island. My daily commute involved trains, ferries, and buses. I pursued higher education on Staten Island and later worked at E.F. Hutton on Wall Street for several years. In late 1979, I enlisted in the Marine Corps (22 years in USMC & 19 years in LE), after living through a period in NYC that preluded the narratives discussed in this interview. It appears my departure was timely.
I had my identity stolen 4 years ago. Horrible! I had to go through so much crap. They & I had the exact same names. First & last. BUT, there was one letter in their name that was reversed. They got caught by me & IRS. They didn't fine, or send them to jail for only one day. Nothing happened to them. Bastards.
As a 9yr old kid 1975 I'd get the whistle up to the window from Kramer Deli on Briggs Ave to run down to the Bainbridge Deli and pick up the Tuesday and Thursday Night Owl. The Daily News driver would throw the bundles out the truck. I would try to catch them especially when it was raining since they'd land in a puddle. The ink HOT OFF THE PRESS would blotch up my face, arms, clothes trying to carry and balance the bundles up the hill to heroes welcome from the die hard Night Owl Brigade standing in line waiting on my arrival. I think I got 50 cents tip and a couple of Nicole and dimes from the customers. But really nothing beat a bacon and egg on a Kaiser with coffee from the Greek Diner as you devoured the 3 NY Dailies stories back in the day!
Hey, you need to write up your stories. This was a fun little bit. Self publish a little book. Pass on your stories. Even if just to your friends and family. Too many people die without telling their stories. Take care.
LOL, so good to see Phil Messing is still alive and kicking. Phil worked for many years in the "Shack" an office in the belly of NYPD One Police Plaza covering the police beat or the "blotter". Phil is a legit and old school legend for crime reporting. I can vouch he is the real deal. All the best Phil.

We have to start being those people. I'm not saying that critically but I thought the same way for years until I finally realized I needed to start making my home and my reality at least some semblance of what I wanted to be by seeking people with similar values and staying as far away from certain distractions as I can. I just got off of Instagram and I miss it but already feel so much more clear-headed.
Some things are better these days. Much less misogyny, homophobia and transphobia for instance. If you were not a straight white man in the 1900s, you were treated as a second class citizen at best...
We rented a house in Florida in a drug house neighborhood, and every once in a while we had to eat dinner on the floor below the windows. All the beds were below the windows. I've heard from people who did the sleeping in the tub thing that that was to keep from getting shot through the walls. Gangs would shoot up a neighborhood and just spray the area. The building materials in poor neighborhoods are somewhat crumbly, so sometimes little kids got shot in their beds through the walls. In contrast, the cheaper bathtubs were made of metal with ceramic overlay, so parents had their kids sleep in the tub or on the couch away from the walls.
And they say USA is a first world country with kids having to live with threat of death and violence daily. That's just horrifying, a type of trauma that must never leave you. No wonder so many people struggle with their mental health and addictions.

Yes, Pete's voice reminded me of Anthony Bourdain's voice as well. Loved to listen to true crime history from these gentlemen. Thank you
