@@Firebird-dd3by this retired cop has definitely perjured himself many many times, and has lied on police reports many many times, and has ruined many many lives, but other than that you are right. he is top notch.
Law enforcement is more than a job. It’s a lifestyle. As I typed that he said that. My father was career law enforcement. He died of dementia 5 years ago. He forgot everything including myself - his daughter who was named after him. He never forgot he was law enforcement.
I was a cop for 1 year 1 months 6 days 14 hours and 42 minutes for the city of Memphis until my squad car was t-boned by a drunk driver causing me to get a Traumatic Brain injury, cracked my skull, and I was in a coma for approximately 2 weeks, and I had a brain bleed. But other officers here in Memphis try to pretend this job isn’t a life style. But it is. It changes the way you think, move,in public and the way you carry yourself. I gotta retire because my brain / cognitive reasoning doesn’t work good anymore but I’m gonna miss every second of it.
What a character-a contagious smile. Thanks for your story David. I saw you misting up when you realised you hadn't dedicated enough time to your kids. It's never too late to put them at the top of your list.
I wish we all loved our job as much as this guy. I feel like I am surrounded by negative energy and people who are bitter, are burnt out or working three jobs and are exhausted because they can't make ends meet. So much has changed, but I feel like the majority of people are not happy at their work place, but feel stuck or trapped for a variety of reasons. As a teacher of 24 years I understand. I was so passionate for probably the first 20 years but its starting to take its toll with all the politics involved, staff drama, low pay even though there is inflation and significant increase of families and children from ALL socio economic backgrounds dealing with trauma, depression, the parents as well and are burnt out from their work and then this all affects the child and their abilities in the classroom, and we are understaff in the classroom and are not trained to be therapists, social workers, psychologists but are expected to wear that hat more than being a teacher most of the time.
I love all these stories that we would not have known otherwise. It’s documented life stories that their families will have forever to look back on. Great interviews Mark.
As a MA native, and 15 year (so far) Boston Marathon volunteer I remember 4/15/13. Very well. I remember the man hunt as well. One thing I will NEVER forget is the steady stream of runners waiting in line to give blood in the days following. We all waited in silence. I remember the first person to check in with me right after the event because she knew I was somewhere on that course. She worked at MA general so at the time. That was a very bad day for everyone.
Very interesting. Love the detective stories. They sacrifice so much for the victims and families. The thought occurred to me that you might find old journalists good for an interview.
Being so close to Boston must have been great. I listened to the police scanners all night the night they were zeroing in on the BB's . Was surreal hearing it all. One Police was entering a house that had the front door open and the commander said " get in and out quick " and the adorable police officer said ' Hey , that is why they call me "in and out quick ______ " ( fill in his last name ) " Fascinating.
Great episode! Det. MacNeil was a great guest, who brought a lot of smiles, with his stories…and some somber moments, as well. Very glad he has found the “what’s next” after retiring from the force.

Thank you Mr. MacNeil for what you are doing. I mean no disrespect but I have said for a long time that if your loved one is murdered and your detective is not making you feel hopeful then immediately hire a private detective especially one with a police background. Again no disrespect but not all detectives are provided the same training & instruction. I personally know of two murders that were handled so horribly I would have said the perp could have been the detective it was so obviously botched. One of them was an 18 year old boy. His case was closed by the detective as an accident despite the brain injury being described as an injury of being hit with a baseball bat several tines or falling from a 3 story building . The boy was found on the sidewalk. His mother wouldn't let it rest. She roamed the streets asking gang members, homeless anyone who would talk to her if they had heard anyone talking about his death. After months of doing this someone finally said yes a very bad guy has been bragging about how dangerous he was and told the story of how he hit his ex girlfriend's brother in the head with a brick ane ended him and how he saw the boy walking and he hid behind a wall and as he walked by hit him in the back of his head. The guy had been fighting with his sister and was hitting her and the boy stood up for his sister and stopped it. It was revenge for getting involved in his relationship and encouraging his sister to leave him. The guy was arrested and got life. His mother was consumed by her son's death. She died from cancer less than 2 years after solving his case. What you're doing is so important. Thank you for not retiring fully and for letting the fire in you continue to burn. We need you and more like you. I back the Blue Line. My comment is in no way a dig at detectives or cops. I just feel like we need a better system of training detectives so that every cop learning gets the chance to learn from the best like you . Thank you.

I think that it is good that there are people who want to be a cop, because we need cops. I will say, however, that I can not be friends with or hang out with adults who are such control freaks that they are driven to spend their days making grown ups follow the rules.
