    That was funny, tree falling the wrong way, I like the teton set up, I want to get me one, money is hard for me, being disabled vet. 63 yes old, and I'd love to go camping one time before I'm not able, so I plan on getting the cot first, then the tent, then later the rain fly that goes to the ground, didnt like that other one you showed, it was short, lol, love your dog, stop drinking, hehe, shalom. Thumbs up.

    Hi Michael, love the cot tent. I am trying to clear my schedule to do an overnight-er for new years eve. I got a few things for Christmas that I want to try out. One of which is an oversize -37c sleeping bag that will fit the cot perfect. Also some new lights including a headlamp. My dog is a little scared when out doors even though he weighs around 90lbs I will try again with him. I also use a Kelly Stove not sure if you are familiar with them, they work great. God bless.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi Keith, sounds like you have some excellent gear to make it a comfortable night. I took a few dog phycology classes during my time fostering rescue dogs and what I learned is, if you're confident and don't keep reassuring the dog (my problem) they are more likely to feel better about any new situation. I guess @ 90lbs he won't be climbing in the sleeping bag - lol. Yes - I know the Kelly kettle and have always admired them. Great for boiling up water fast! Very classic piece of gear. Have a happy trip Keith and take some pictures! Best wishes Michael!

And lots of great footage of Esme! ❤️ I feel bad I was one of the people that voted tent cot and it looked so cold! I get excited to try winter camping again, but then I watch these videos from my nice warm bed and I think nope not for me. I would imagine when it’s really cold poor Esme has a tough time? Stay warm and healthy happy holidays MICHAEL. Cheers🎄🎁

      HI Jacqueline - It was a good trip and -18c is pretty fine for the cot tent. Cot tents work really well in snow and cold I feel but you don't see many other using them that way. The sleeping bag mishap was a problem but I wasn't very cold to be honest. Thanks for the camera comments - I'm working on improving my skills :) Esme was from an aboriginal reserve and the dogs there are outside animals all year long. Her blood line has either endured or perished so she is from hardy stock. She loves the snow and doesn't mind the cold. Her fur is almost all grown in now and she has no trouble with very low temperatures but I always keep a watchful eye on her. ❤️ Best wishes to you and your family. Michael & Esme

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +2

      I've thought of similar ideas and people have mentioned hot rocks from the fire. However, -18.5c is actually pretty mild and I was comfortable in the sleeping bag despite the zip being missing. As it gets colder I will move to the hot tent and have the stove going but I have also considered a Mr Heater there too. You can run a full 8 hours on a small cylinder so I could sleep all night and not need to feed the fire. Something to think about!

    Merry Christmas Michael and Esme! Another great adventure in the books! I was happy to notice you switched your knife from the front to the side - growing up I knew a guy who bled out in an otherwise survival accident because his knife (sheath and all) punctured his femoral artery during the mishap. I once read how a guy did the same thing squatting down to pick up firewood... Really sad. ☹️ Great job explaining the various effects of the Canadian cold. As a kid I recall Dad's nylon belted tires freezing 'flat' on the bottom! They would rumble until they warmed up and found round again... Excellent video. 👍

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Kanukkarhu - glad you like the video! I have to make a new knife sheath, the black one is from my Fallkniven S1. You are right, the sheath placement is safety and usability issue - sorry to hear about that incident, very sad. I'm also not a fan of neck carry for similar safety concerns. I'll be making a new "proper sheath" hopefully soon. My projects list is growing but I'm enjoying just getting out rather than crafting at home. I heard of that even with modern tires at very cold temperatures - What we have to put up with ehh!! :D. Best wishes Michael & Esme!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      TETON is way more solid - The Kamp-Rite have this weird strap that has to be pulled tight to stop the legs folding in. I've used the TETON as a guess bed too and it works as expected.

    Nicely done. Have you tried any sort of fire reflector...homemade or bought? Maybe something that folds that could be put at the far end of the fire pit to reflect heat back at you. Just an idea. Thanks!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi Norm, thank you for the comment. Fire reflectors are a complete myth - they don't reflect anything. The only reflectors that would have any effect would be the ones fixed to the roof of an angled tarp, thus reflecting heat down onto you. The reason behind the loss of heat is basically the Inverse-square law, so the further away you are the lower the amount of radiated heat. To expect the heat to travel to the reflector, bounce and travel all the way back to you and still be useable is not feasible. I see this a lot on other channels and its complete BS - those stacked logs act as a wind block is all. The majority of campfire heat is convection, so directing the hot air around you produces good heat (but smoke too). I don't mean to rant a little but there are way too many RUclips bushcraft channels that are just fake news. I trust just a few for good information, Survival Russia & True North Bushcraft and Survival primarily. Hope that answers the question :). Best wishes Michael & Esme.

    Thanks for the prompt reply. I admit it was a bit of a leading question and I agree with your reply. It is very educational to those who might read it. Really glad that you took the time to explain dispel the fake concept...keep doing what you are doing! Any possible heat reflection would be caught up in the upward convection at the source anyway. But it might be a way to warm cookie sheets in the wild! Would you like to share your thoughts on the vast amount of outdoor items made in China? I am willing to pay more for local but so hard to find.
    Peace to you in the New year.
    Norm

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi Norm thanks for the comment back - seems we think very alike :D. Like anything the location of manufacture is not important but WHO manufactures it. People criticize China build quality but they perhaps don't realize Apple products are made there and they have some of the highest standards around. If you are not a heavy user or hard on equipment some of the cheaper stuff is pretty good value. I like the TETON brand - its affordable and I've pushed it beyond what it was designed for and its still in good shape. For stuff I want to keep and can't afford for it to fail I try and buy made in North America - such as the Snowtrekker tent. I know if anything happens to it they will be around to service the tent if needed. I'm also considering a Frost River bushcraft bag - and I expect it to last until I'm dead :) - Happy New Years my friend - Best wishes Michael

    Hi Michael, good to see you and Esme out again having fun! That Teton sleeping bag really let you down. That's not a good thing when you are in the bush and its cold! What's your take on keeping a couple of MREs under the seat of your Argo as backup food? I have never eaten an MRE so I'm not sure how good they taste. That drone footage is really awesome! I love how it follows you around when you are driving the Argo. Technology these days are really something!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Daryl - Yes, it was a shame :( I'm going through a warranty claim for the bag right now, so we will see what happens. I carry 1 MRE in my truck and 1 in my blue bag (in my Argo) for emergencies. MRE are pretty good and cheap to buy so make excellent survival food. The British forces 24 hour ration packs are better but hard to get in Canada :/ Glad you liked the drone footage - I think its adds some perspective to my location :). Best wishes Michael & Esme

    I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I’m really enjoying them. I have a question. I’m confused about the cot tent. If it rains doesn’t the cot get wet? Meaning rain a lot of times splashes up and the bottom stays dry? Thanks again for doing these videos.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  Год назад +1

      With the Elite fly (long fly that goes to the ground) the tent stays perfectly dry as it's fully enclosed. With the short fly water can get between the cot and the tent bottom. However, the tent bottom is waterproof but not ideal. In very wet climates I would strongly recommend the elite fly, which can also be rolled up to a short fly for warmer days 👍 Hope that helps!

    Found your channel while looking for info on the Teton cot and tent combo. Never liked the Kamprite for its packed size.
    I do have a question concerning the Teton pad though. How is the insulation from the cold with it alone? While not the same cold you're dealing with, I always use a closed cell pad under my air pad to provide extra insulation from the cold coming through the cot. Similar concept to hammock camping.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi David - I can recommend the TETON cot, tent and really like the pad. I found that at below -30c / -22f I would feel the cold through the pad. I think adding a layer of reflectix insulation would be enough to solve that issue or a foam mat. Sealing the bottom of the cot in very cold temps also works well (I did a poor job on my -30c video 😄) with the Elite rainfly upgrade. As with hammocks moving air is your enemy! Best wishes Michael & Esme!

    Great adventure on these trails! Is that public land? Nice job downing the tree. I also have a Stihl and have cleared trails for my Argo with it. The gear you have is impressive, and it's neat to see & hear about camping in such conditions (pretty extreme for me, I'm from Texas!). Merry Christmas Michael and Es. Hope you and your family had an amazing day.
    Thank you for the tech updates. I view tech as year as it is integrated into our lives. Also bummer on the zipper malfunction. I think I'm gonna get me a cot tent. I have been kicking around the idea for a while. Also what is about mummy bags you don't like? Besides es can't sleep at your feet? Happy new years as well. Thanks.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi Ben, Merry Christmas to you too! Yes - I was a little disappointed with the zipper but things happen. Overall I liked the bag. If you don't mind the extra weight the cot tent is a great option. It really makes for a comfortable nights sleep. I think with the mummy style bags, you don't save as much weight and volume as you might think. The extra room in the bag is great for wearing extra cloths or adding an inner bag. Because the zip broke, I slept in my jacket and trousers, something I would find difficult with a mummy bag. Also, this trip inside my bag I had 2 x cameras and batteries, 2 litres of water, 2 x USB battery banks, can of tuna and Esme :) So more room is better LOL

    • @benspoliticsandnewsbencook9151
      @benspoliticsandnewsbencook9151 5 лет назад +1

      Oh my. Well then it makes sense having that extra space. I guess because it doesn't get below 15°f here hardly ever. I don't need to thick of a bag. I like that other bag you and Es used. I'm really limited to car camping and and when I get an atv where ever I can get to in it. So a cot tent will be my go to I think. I like how high yours sits. I don't remember if that kamprite? Cot tent sits as high as the one you used. I'm 6'3" so every thing even my couches seem like they are deep knee bend furniture and it sucks with bad knees. Any way. Hope you and your family had an amazing Christmas. Love your channel Michael. I love you have more content coming out and I'm always glad to chat with you when we can. Thanks so much for your input.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Ben - If the temperature is not too bad - take a look at a top quilt. Gives you plenty of room. Thats what I brought as my backup sleep system. The TETON would work great for a bigger person. The cot is 85" long x 40" wide x 19" high - I think its the biggest cot Ive ever seen and now they have one with a lever to assist with putting the end pieces in (can be a little tight). It's also taller than the Kamp-Rite. Best wishes to you also Ben and enjoy the new year - Michael & Esme!

In a hammock it's the only good way to insulate the bottom of your sleeping area as using mats are a pain in the butt. With a flat surface like a cot, a good mat is a better option and is less than half the price of a low temperature quilt. Best wishes from Canada!
