  • @nickturner2606
    @nickturner2606 5 лет назад +1

    Hey mate, just had a thought on your hot tent floor/groundsheet dilemma.
    Don’t know if you ever notice mat wells when you enter or leave a building but the mat itself is an excellent product, it comes on a roll and has a thick butyl backing and the top is either natural hemp or a nylon analogue. It comes in a variety of widths, is water proof from the ground under and you can hose it off and with a stiff broom it cleans easily. The downside is it’s a bit heavy but that weight can work for you when in use. A couple of big heavy duty eyelets installed either end would allow pinning in place. It rolls up readily and a couple of straps will allow it to be handled and stowed on the Argo with ease. Might serve really well on a multi day outing, keeping your living space free from the schmoo. Hey! Anything to avoid a shit-yi-ation eh?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hahaha - good thinking Nick! Might be a tad on the heavy side would be my concern and material like that at cold temperatures (-25c and below) becomes stiff and brittle. However, I'll take a look and see if I can find some to do some tests! Thanks again for a great idea!

  • @kanukkarhu
    @kanukkarhu 5 лет назад +1

    Too bad about the tiny tent... It looked good! Not sure I get the 'tipi' style tents - but then again I've never had one. I was interested in the splitting axe stuff... In the winter I like to have an axe that can limb trees for emergency shelters. I have a GB SFA but prefer a larger Hudson"s Bay style Norlund in snow. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Kanukkarhu - I think the tipi style tents are loved or hated and certainly not for everyone. The lack of a porch is a major draw back for that style. I think the GB Small Forest Axes is probably one of the best axes around - great piece of gear - but you are right for serious stuff a full size or double bit axe is much better. I'm a bit of a heratic if I'm honest as I would take a saw instead of an axe, especially for winter camping :/. Controversial I know.

    • @kanukkarhu
      @kanukkarhu 5 лет назад

      @@TheEmporiumOutdoors I agree with the saw - for firewood, there's nothing better than a good saw. But while I don't usually winter camp (overnight, like) I still like an axe in the bush. I use mine for wood but also to smack frozen stuff, get snow off of trees, breaking ice etc. Growing up where I did, no one went anywhere in the winter bush without a 'real' axe. Do you like double bit axes?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      For a general all round tool the axe is king but I would just hate to cut logs with an axe all day long. I've never persoanlly owned a double bit axe but have used them. I like the idea of having an axe that has different abilities built into one axe, saving the weight. However, the idea of swinging a double bit puts me off slightly. I think its for skilled individuals to get the most out of that type of tool.

    • @kanukkarhu
      @kanukkarhu 5 лет назад

      @@TheEmporiumOutdoors 👍🏻Axes can be first exhausting and then dangerous... I have a few double bit axes but haven't got handles for them yet... Tough to find around here. An old timer once told me he cut his cap on a back swing once. Hard to imagine, but I don't think he'd lie. Makes me wonder how dangerous that second blade is when it's swinging back towards you.

    Evening mister, just found you on here and watched a couple of uploads, I heartily approve of the mechanical aids to wandering off to nowhere, after all lightweight is all well and good but a few civilised touches are niiiiiiice!
    If you’re still looking for a pair of gloves, take a look at the Snickers winter work gloves, they’re warm, tough and made in Sweden (supposedly).
    I use them to ski because they allow better dexterity and they’re more durable than your average ski gloves. For working to clear trails, using tools and general camp graft I think you might find them the Cockford- Ollie! They’re fairly skookum😉

      @@TheEmporiumOutdoors for the cold side heat sink I use a cpu heat sink it's able to sink like 100 watts of heat and had no problem so far. Water heat sink are easy and reliable in any temperature as water will not go above 100 degrees Celsius but don't bump it it's going to make a mess. You could also use liquid cool but.... we are adding way to much complexity to something we require to be simple. I'll wait to see your result!

    Does the peak of the pyramid have a metal ring on the outside? If it does, going over an overhead branch with a line (above it) and then nix the pole (inside) by suspending the peak from overhead. Might make for a little bit more room inside to lay diagonally. Nothing worse then a miserable/cold night.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Yes it does and I did consider hanging it that way but decided to try it with the pole as this would be the most popular way of using the tent. It was ok - I"m just used to sleeping really well in my big sleeping bag - getting spoilt! :D

    • @RatdogDRB
      @RatdogDRB 5 лет назад

      Good to hear they had a little forward thinking in that regard. Now, if a feller were to take a roll of "Reflectix" (Amazon) and cut four lengths of it (equal to each of the four sides of the tent), and make an internal skirt that went under the ground sheet and up the side... that'd offer you a wind break to lose that bottom draft point. Another length of it beneath your sleeping pad(s), and it should make things more tolerable in the colder season use.

      Fine ideas!!! But unfortunately, it would still be too small - I'll be doing a full review soon with all the measurements. Its a shame as I was very excited to get this tent. I suspected it was small as on the Naturehike video, they had a kid climb in to demo the size :/

    Hi Michael and Esme. My opinions? Well while I get what you are doing by testing equipment and on many occasions it works, there are those times when it doesn't. Just my humble opinion but I feel that you are enhancing your life by doing what you obviously love to do and there are going to be the odd occasions where that doesn't happen, for me, this was one of them. The tent while well made didn't work. With respect we get to see you first thing in the morning and today you were not looking at your best. I get that the sleeping bag was wrong but it is about the experience as a whole and for me, that didn't work. The video did, and it was good to see you guys again.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      In my location the only option would be the Argo. No other "one" machine can be used all year round. The other advantage of the Argo is I can also use it for fishing. However, for the price you could buy a second hand SxS, small boat and a snow machine that would do very well. If you don't live with snow, I would probably buy a Honda Pioneer 700.

      @@TheEmporiumOutdoors With the Argo, what are the advantages of a 6 wheel vs an 8 wheel?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      For me the 6x6 fitted in the bed of my F150 8ft box, it was cheaper to buy and faster. 8x8 carries more gear/people plus more traction. I will probably buy an 8x8 with the Admiral transmission next as the load capacity is a big attraction, especially in winter but its a lot more money. I can also extend my plastic 18" super tracks to fit the 8x8, so I won't have to buy them again. I'd like to keep both if I could as I love the 6x6 but the 8x8 makes more sense for the snow.

      Hi TheDonCappucino - Its a fine balance of providing some sponsored content for stuff I would have purchased myself - Like the Nature Hike tents. I buy the vast majority of gear myself and sometimes reach out to companies that viewers suggest to me to see if they are interested in suppling a review sample. Either way, my views on the equipment are not swayed by how I obtain them and I provide honest content. It's not cheap running a RUclips channel, unless you just Vlog from your living room or show PC gaming content. Every month I pay personally to put the videos online as the RUclips revenue almost never covers my gas money just to get to location.
