- From the two-bladed sword in D&D or other RPGs to Darth Maul's dual lightsaber, double bladed weapons are fairly popular in fantasy & sci-fi movies, video games, etc. They sure look cool to many people.
Too bad they kinda suck. At least the way most of them are designed, with a relatively short handle and long blades. A double ended spear or polearm on the other hand... now we're talking!

Shorts are overused by some but this rocks. Super well edited very concise and gives great information!
Yeah I agree with him a double ended sword would suck.
But a lightsaber that can cut effortlessly in all directions regardless of blade alignment would be absolutely deadly in the hands of a person with superhuman senses.
@@LisaAnn777 The issue isn't if it can or can't cut. The problem is trying to not do that to yourself and the inherently limiting design.
@@midgetman4206 well that's what I was saying, I think we agree with normal blades weapons, but in the star wars universe where people have superhuman senses a double bladed saber would be insanely deadly if they can use it affectively and would catch most people off guard if used right agaisnt them.
I love skalls videos I just disagree with his opinion on double blades sabers when their made of fricken plasma or what tf magic it's supposed to be.
I get in real life double ended blades are dumb, but we don't have pre cognicion so his animosity is a bit unfounded.
He's a great and knowledgeable swordsman so like I said he's right when it comes to blades, but not magical plasma cutting blades lol

Wow..... that was a damn good short.
Absolutely one of a kind, damn Skal.
That felt a lot longer than most shorts. So much information.

The Spartans had what was essentially a double ended spear. It had a sharp, leaf shaped blade on one end and a more blunted, but still pointy, tip on the other. This helped balance the spear and allowed both ends to be used, although the blunt end was mostly just for reinforcement of the back end during a phalanx
so a spear with a pommel at the other end?
Very interesting did not know that about the Spartans.
Halbard also often had spear on the other side. This allowed more dramatic over the shoulder swings while still being able to thrust forward . also easier to control cause it doesn't have an ax head on that side.
Other pole arms often had them too but halbards are my favorite.
Swiss Guard Halbards still have them.
@@gibbous_silverthat's a pretty good way of putting it.
Not just Spartans. Almost every hoplites had pommels of their spears.
The spike on the butt of the sparten dory spear was called the sauroter or lizard killer. And in addition everything everybody has said here it was also used to dispatch fallen soldiers as the hoplites marched after battle
This is why i love the double bladed weapons in KOTOR2 not the lightsaber but the actual bladed weapons or staffs. They depict them having super long handles for grip and transition the animations on attacks very cleanly.
Says alot about how a game from that long ago cared about details
Yup and plus with a light Saber you don't need to angle a blade properly.
That was before cookie cutter games existed. That was when devs needed to make their games good to make any amount of money. Good times, except for the graphics
@@velarswood Cookie cutter games existed before then.
@@thatTesstyBishkotor was a cookie cutter game tho the story was good but the gameplay wasnt innovative or intuitive it was as mindless as your average hack and slash like dynasty warriors
Kotor was my first thought when the subject of double bladed swords came up. Although in that game the swords had rather short handles of approximately 18 inches. 18 inches is excessively long for a single bladed sword, but rather short for a polearm.

Ten foot dowl with a Swiss Army knife duct taped to one end and a pair of truck nuts on the other. Ultimate fighting weapon.
Double bladed stuff only really works if it's either really short like a glove weapon, or really long like a double pointed spear. It works with the lightsabers of Star Wars because they are omnidirectional anti-material rods that destroy whatever they touch. Aiming a blade doesn't matter when it's basically just a really light quarterstaff.
Double bladed lightsaber works because you don’t have to align anything and a hit = a ko instantly
Also, you can just turn off the second blade when it might get it in the way
@@Sb_747 except they don't do that
I don't like the trend with Shorts getting soo much view-time but I think this is a good format for you to promo longer videos. This made me hungry for more
I don't see any problems with Shorts. They are a good way to promote Skals longer videos or channel in general, nothing more nothing less.
@@DrazenTC But not all shorts on YT promotes videos for Skallagrim (unfortunately). The general tik-tok vibe of Shorts is what I don't like. I am however (as already stated) pro Skall using this medium to promo his content.

@@erikjohnson2885he explains in the video why a short handle with long blades would be problematic
@@truegreen7595 he explained the short handle, not the long blades. In all examples, the blades are just too short to do anything with.
Y’all prob already know this but I’m gonna say it anyways. Dual-bladed lightsabers were able to turn off one side so you can use it normally. Notice how Darth Maul was fighting one person with a singe blade in one scene, but used both outnumbered.
Found a " double ended weapon " under my wife's side of the mattress......you're right. Looks dangerous.
Holy cow man. This is one of these rare occasions where shorts are used in a perfect way by both time wise and enjoyment wise. Well done
To be honest a lightsaber works as a great dual bladed weapon, mainly because you dont have to worry about edge alignment, i do understand the downside of being a danger to yourself but obviously with enough practice you can do just about anything with it
The key part is getting through the practice stage without beheading yourself
Agreed. Only other way you could effectively use a double bladed weapon is either as a throwing weapon, or primarily for blocking. Or maybe I'm just thinking about Sans' double bladed bone short sword from DTLG.
Also lightsaber combat doesn't always necessarily follow the same logic as standard weapons since we're dealing with force users whose abilities allow them to pull of some moves/things that would otherwise not be usable or worth it
Lightsaber designs in general are limited more by the power of the force user and their skill in combat.
Force users in general have foresight in combat, which is why they can deflect blaster bolts and all that. This also allows for the more… unique lightsaber designs like Exar kun(I can’t spell his same) to be effective.
Exar used a 1 handed 2 bladed lightsaber, irl this would hurt you more than your opponent but in his hands he could spin it like it was a staff
Lightsabers are a thing of fiction nerd
Twin blades can work, but the blades would need to shorter, something closer to a naginata in length. They’d also need to be double edged otherwise you can’t hit shit. Like the guy said in the video the handle would also need to be pretty long. Also some sort of hand guard.
I think an excellent example is the default twin blade from Elden Ring, though the blades could be a bit shorter and the handle a bit longer.
I had learned this the hard way 1st time I decided to use the double-bladed sword in Blades and Sorcery on the canyon map just like in the short. Man I was picturing myself like Darth Maul but instead I found out more of a bargain bin version as I could barely use the other bladed end without it feeling awkward, no wonder why it's listed in the exotic category in the book
Look at my man making *High Quality* shorts 😱❤️
Very succinct and informative
I like how you go through all the similar weapons showing how these traits give advantages and disadvantages, especially the Quarterstaff as the extreme example "all handle no blade".
I watched someone thoroughly explain a double sword and he explained that they require a specific style of fighting that relies far less on defense and is more of a offensive weapon
I think even in Star Wars Maul using the doubke-bladed lightsaber was said to be useful partially because it's, well, scary. And it works for him because he is scary
My man with the high quality content. I'm looking forward to that Dane axe sparring
I think the issue with twinblades isn't the individual length of sword or staff, but the proportional length between both after having a sufficient staff length.
It's definitely important to have 2-3 feet of grip, but if the blades are too long, it becomes unwieldy.
Experimental idea:
Mix a twinblade sword with a twinblade spear. In other words, get a twinblade spear and experiment with extending how long the blades are.
DOUBLE DAGGER
Jedi temple guards: thats what I've been saying
Happy to see that it blew up!
I always wondered: while Skall keeps thrashing the double bladed word, Shad from Shadiversity praised it after testing it. So who’s right?
Watch both videos and come to your own conclusion. I incline more to the side of skalls argument
I generally go with whoever I know has the most experience swinging stuff around. In this case (and most others involving Shad) I'd go with Skall.
Shad’s fighting in, essentially, a high guard and making one particular move over and over.
Well both have great points. Shad points out that in an open area with freedom of movement its an amazing weapon in a duel. Especially if you use more Windmill like movements where you get the 2nd blade to follow up as fast as possible after the first.
But in tighter formations, or indoors Skall is right in that the second blade can get in the way more than help.
In my opinion to have a weapon thats useful in both situations and has more utility, make the second blade shorter, and make the main blade curved. That way you have an excelent slashing weapon that can become a thrusting weapon as a backup and for utility. And unlike the Longsword it would specialize enough in both aspects without sacrificing either. The only weakness of corse is lop sided weight which can be a problem for some techniques.
Skall
If you know where one blade is, you should theoretically know exactly where the other blade is. After you master that mindset, you just need to practice. After that, try throwing in extravagant movements to throw off the opponent's concentration.
The advantage of using such an unusual weapon is that the opponent can't anticipate your strategy based on previous experience.
He's just saying that a twin spear would be significantly better than a twin sword because you wouldn't have to practice not hurting yourself. It would also most likely be cheaper to make and easier to use for most people.
Its impractical simple as that. I bet if some one trained with a sword for a year and some one else did the same with darth maul like sword the normal sword guy would still win. The real beasts on the battle field didn't need extravagant movements to throw off the opponent's concentration. They would just use things that are more practical like parrying and countering mixed with well timed blows. Real life fights to the death normally weren't very flashy and they would be over very fast with very little movement wasted.
@@billfred9411 weird, I don't even remember making this comment
Thank you for the education. I can't wait to put into practice what I have learned while I am filling out paperwork at my job
Your videos always show me how realistic VR is when you set it up right. I felt this immediately about double bladed weapons when I tried them out - very clunky and difficult.
Did more damage with it just kinda bumbling about in circles like Jar Jar binks, not Darth Maul lmao.
And again! A double ended spear I had great fun with in Blade and Sorcery :D
I sometimes like to swing with a two hander and a little knife in a reverse grip. If you're careful it doesn't restrict your two-handed movements however I couldn't work it into some viable moves that include knife.
Why would you hold two weapons both opposite on the scale when your could devote you attention to the one blade? I can't imagine holding a zweihander with a dagger. Maybe keep the dagger for when you go onto ground combat.
@@NinjaSushi2 I get bored when working solo and I don't get much sparring lately. The question usually is not "why?" but "will it (theoretically) work?" I guess my original interest was in sharpened pommels that I maght have seen somewhere.
I also tried knife with my zweihander mock-up and even then it was useless. Both with a spear grab and reverse pseudo double blade hold.
So, yeah, double edge is a bad idea in any way immaginable. Zweihanders though are awesome! Even in star wars.
Tbh: I use this channel for my rpg-writing group. I am writing in a lot of different groups so i am also using a variety of different characters with different fighting styles. And if I don't know what my next character should use and i want something new, i check out the weapon videos and how they are used^^
My Healer had a Mace with a small but heavy tip. Almost like a baton cuz Skall talked about the pro and cons.
Also I like that I know that normal swords aren't that heavy and the Opness of spears!
if your story is realistic, all of those weapons get countered by pikes, halberds, mace, war hammer, axe, field artilleries, and guns.
This is probably the best short I've ever seen. Well done!
Darth Mauls light saber was actually a really functional weapon because he didn’t use it like a sword when he had both blades activated. When he jumped off of his speeder and started fighting Qui-Gon, he only had one blade activated and took advantage of the extra hilt length to gain leverage over him. Later, when he fights Obi-Wan an Qui-Gon at the same time, he has both blades activated and uses his whole body while fighting them rather than using it like a standard single bladed sword to take advantage of its superior defensive capabilities while still preserving its attack potency and lethality.
Concise, informative and trailer for next longer video.
I think you have nailed the short format with stuff like this!
Good short! Keep it up Skal!
The other complaint about double-bladed swords is edge alignment. With lightsabers like Darth Maul’s, edge alignment is a non-issue.
Love to see become even better and better when RUclips makes it so freakin damn hard for content creators. You are a beast

Hey nice to see a short from you! You did an awesome job on this one! Keep it up!
Have you seen the quarter staff length handle review Shad did? It’s about the same as the Sword staff in Blade and sorcery, in game I find that it works best if you keep range and gives enough defense to regain it.
Well spoken, Skall. As usual. The only effective, double "bladed" weapons I've ever seen have basically been polearms with a spear tip on both ends. This is especially true when you're fighting alongside other people.
Shad did a video: don't do a maul hold, treat as a polearm.

Yeah, that was kinda comical the way he did that.
It occurs to me that the double-bladed lightsaber is not really a double-bladed sword, as it’s used more as a staff.
I always liked the idea of 2 swords that you can attach at the end. Or 2 axes. Like the Orc double axe.
You know what is trash? Saying that something is trash.
double ended spear actually sounds great!
Idk why but I felt scared even through the screen when he was swinging those weapons at the camera
Good shorts from this dude. I do like his longer stuff too.
Shadiversity’s video on this already: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
jokes and memes aside, both of them are right, but also wrong at the same time. It solely depends on the situation, though two swords on each end seems a bit too impractical and the configuration is rather hybridization between a blade and a spear/pike
i guess it depends on how you make the grip for the double ended sword as shad liked it once he started practicing how it would work.
So you are telling me that i found a short with a 1:1 aspect ratio so that i can clearly see whats happening? a short that doesnt have someone speaking fast af because they didnt make a proper script before recording? A short that doesnt try to loop itself as an overused joke and failing anyways?

Double spears were pretty common for lancers till even the first world war :). And they were well known in napoleonic wars.
Or just go for a one handed version, like a haladie, wich is 100% a real weapon that was used in India. It's not a double bladed staff but it's still pretty cool.
Btw I think this is a great addition to the channel, shorts are pretty popular right now, well done Skall :)

You can definitely have a spear end on one side and an pike on the other. They were commonly used with different options which could be switched depending on if you were fighting calvary or infantry.
You could just reverse the side door enemy infantry or switch back for calvary.
Often spears had formations and lines so mixing them adaptably like that is really useful.

the fact that it's so difficult to use and takes so much focus is what makes Darth maul's effectiveness all the more impressive
Imagine a musket, where you have a bayonet on one end and a big piece of wood with brass plating on top of it on the other end.
You've gotten so good over the years with your performance and production. Years ago I remember stumbling across your videos and thinking "Hmm, interesting, but kinda cheesy and goofy." Not anything wrong with that, of course.

For a really short grip the shorter the blade also works lol. That south Asian double bladed dagger looks really really fun!!!
I feel like to be really usable the handle of a double ender should be like 3/4 your armspan or more, otherwise you could end up fighting your own range of motion more than anything else.
Somebody trying to make a device for kayaking in overgrown lakes

I believe there's a specific balance needed for a double sided sword staff to be effective spear heads aren't big enough but your average arming sword is to long so if you got say a short swords length. Maybe say a Gladius that's not a very long sword but it is still a sword and stuck it on a 3/4 shaft you could absolutely do some effective work with it

Viewed from another perspective I'd could make more sense to use the double blade. In an one on one fight it might be crap but fighting several opponents in little space it IS quite handy. More dangerous than a stick or pole as well as you won't go for so many grips out of the center of the weapon. Shorter than a pike ad we'll and there for more swift and agile. With faster stinging attacks in at least two directions than you could perform with a sword. Surely it's a special weapon, not an all rounder but you always need to see where and when to use it. It's not always a one on one fight in a big yard.
There's gotta be a way to make a happy medium between the two, like two cinqueda or something
The kinetic motion of medieval combat is so interesting to watch.
Super cool i like your content buddy its really interesting/informative keep up the good sh*t your content is gold 💪🏻👌🏻
I really like that creative ending you added to your clip UwU
I think its worth noting that a stick with 2 swords with a single edge on it vs a double bladed Lazer weapon which can retract at will and can do damage with the blade omni-directionally probably has more ups.
Like if you asked me to do battle with a well balanced sword or pole arm or even a staff vs a double bladed lightsaber I'm choosing the doublebladed lightsaber.
Plus there's not a lot of lightsaber equivalents to other weapons like nunchucks or maces. But yeah I don't think a double bladed sword is of much use outside the lightsaber equivalent.

The Achaemenid Persian elite soldiers are often depicted wielding spears with the back end being a ball of bronze. Used as a counterweight to the head and as a bludgeoning weapon. I think that kinda counts as a double sided weapon.
I’ll remember this the next time I’m in a spontaneous sword fight with my clergy
I fight best with a quarter staff and a wrist guard. It's difficult to turn a quarter staff against it's owner even with superior strength, unlike double edged blades or even single edged ones, and with the wrist guard there is little need to parry, rather I can just block a strike easily without the bulk or weight of a shield
