The "Letter from Birmingham Jail", also known as the "Letter from Birmingham City Jail" and "The Negro Is Your Brother", is an open letter written on April 16, 1963, by Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.

What a man. I am 60 years old. Grew up in Brooklyn NY . Always been a Christian, never did drugs, never committed crimes or knowingly harmed my neighbors. Graduated American University, R.O.T.C. graduate. Always played by the "rules". Yet I received the whip of racism and prejudice on my back and still carry the scars today. Many of my contemporaries did not survive. Jails, drugs, unemployment, destroyed families, separation. All black and Latino men reading me , I salute you. Peace.
It is truly heartbreaking to hear this and how relevant it still is. A powerful piece.

So often amazes and saddens me to hear these old speeches from over 50 years ago and everything is still relevant to today and the conversations I've had with many whites in these "better" times we live in in 2021.

Times are better now than they were back then, however the work must continue as it's not perfect and never will, but people and society can always be better and we must continue building upon the work of those that came before us and one day the work will continue with those that come after us. Just like the great wall of china that took 2,000 years to fully complete spanning generations. So too is work towards a better world, we all must do our part building it.

Martin Luther King Jr. proves here, he was not only a great Orator, but also a great Writer. This is perhaps the greatest protest literature letter of the 20th century.

i listen to this about once a month. It shows me how far African-Americans have came ( not far ) and how far we still have to go. I recommend reading and listening to this "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" to certain people who like to quote "the content of our character and not the color of our skin" line. Dr King was deep; you have to study more than just the "I Have a Dream" speech.

Just change African American part, the majority are not straight from Africa, the 1st generation was, then the 2nd generation are just known as American.

He was truly brilliant! And him being in places like jail in Birmingham, proves that he was braver than some of the other leaders that you think may be better than him. Some talked a good game but never went to the South and faced the devil eye to eye.

This did not disappoint, it is filled with compassion, empathy, pain and understanding.
Every sentence is clear and on point, and it fell on so many ears that refused to listen.
While I have not finished it quite yet, I am struck by the consistent support of the disenfranchised and oppressed, wherever they are in the world, whoever they are.
He deserved better than the cruelty and violence done against him. Remember how he died, and hear what words that people have tried to silence.

I might not agree with CRT, depending on the devil in the details. But I feel like Dr. King's sermons and philosophy ought to be taught as part and parcel of Patriotic education, and Character education, in America's schools. MORAL EDUCATION is important now more than ever. America has not had a better moral voice than Martin Luther King, Jr. By the way, he was a close friend of Billy Graham, perhaps closer than JFK.
Critical Race Theory is a field of sociology that has roots in MLK and his activism. The struggle of black Americans continues to this day, and working to address issues found in studies of critical race theory is a continuation of MLK's dream.
