She was a black actress at the wrong time. She suffered so much, kept going and got tired to some point. She is just sleeping now. She would be feeling some kind of joy to see the evolution of black people on the screen. She inspired several women in the entertainment industry. Her history is as sad as it is fascinating. Sleep well angel.

She had good opportunities but wasn't strong enough to make good use of them. She should've focused on her career, daughter and only them. It's a waste considering the fact that her affairs with Preminger, actors and her second husband were not her pursuits. In fact, her sister-in-law claimed that she married her second husband because she was a masochist and wanted to punish herself.

She was truly A+, 100% class, beauty and poise. She paved the way for Diana Ross, Cicely Tyson, Whoopi Goldberg and many others. We should focus on what her image and accomplishments as well as remember the limitations that racism had on the careers of her generation of artists. But they knew the value of exposure. Saying things like “Id rather be beautiful than smart anyday.” No! No! No! Dorothy hardly went to school as a child performer and never graduated. According to Geri, her bestie, she was very insecure about it and wanted to swallow up as much knowledge as possible. Also she never put her toe in that pool. There's so much wrong with it. Dorothy was a class act. Not a rebel and not a dummy. I would love to see a series but who could play her?

Poor Dorothy she had the stack of cards of life against her since her mothers lesbain lover violated her and her sister to see if they was still virgins and than she married that womanizer Harold Niholas that she had to deal a mentally disable daughter with no help from her husband all this and trying to maintain a Hollywood career and night club jobs in this video of 1956 she was two years from making Carmen Jones in 1955 no movie offers until 1957 when made Island in the Sun .Dorothy Dandridge’s performance in “Island in the Sun” contributed to the film’s impact and its exploration of complex themes. The movie was considered controversial at the time of its release due to its portrayal of interracial romance on-screen and that was big new in 1950s America.Movie roles started coming to Dorothy with two movies in 1958 Tamango and The decks Ran Red and Porgy and Bess in 1959.Even Dorothy was getting movie role and singing in clubs things was all not that rosey Dorothy was have a affair with married man director Otto Preminger which she had to get abortion which end their affair because Otto wasn't leaving his wife.1959 Dorothy with one movie under belt rebound and married this wolf in sheep clothes called Jack Denison, all was well but bad luck hitted Dororthy again in the man department her husband Jack Denison was abusive and con and played on Dorothy Dandridge fame and her money to a point of making Dorothy In 1963, filed for bankruptcy, facing debts exceeding $100,000 Despite her remarkable career as an actress and singer, financial challenges took a toll on her life.Things just got worse in the early 1960sfor her .Hollywood was'nt knocking on Dorothy Dandridge door as in the 1950s she started drinking and taking pills she only did one movie called Malaga (1960): A lesser-known film from her career. In 1962 now
divorced in Bankruptcy and dealing with Financial Stress With no means to care for her daughter, Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas, Dandridge faced a heartbreaking decision. She had to move into a smaller apartment and take Harolyn out of a private care facility.Sometime in life you can be the most beautiful flower in the yard give it TLC and all a sudden tornado wipe it away to never be seen again.By 1965 I guess Dorothy Dandridge proberbly what went wrong why me.I guess she didn't see her career going no where if though she was making a comeback them pills was a better way to go out she was just tired of BS of life. Dorothy Dandridge’s life was marked by immense talent, groundbreaking achievements, but also personal struggles. Her legacy endures, and her resilience continues to inspire generations.R.I.P.Dorothy Dandridge your beauty and talent wont be forgotten.

Its the mid-atlantic voice. She is from Ohio, but also it was the prevailing stype of speaking in those times. Listen to Katherine Hepburn speak, and you'll see what I mean. She speaks in that same mid-atlantic style of speaking.

Haley and Dorothy look so much alike….. just my opinion they are basically equally beautiful….. It really had to be hard for her to be so physically perfect in an industry ran by men who literally acted like dogs…. So many of our beautiful women suffered in silence as a result of so many brutal and promiscuous men in the industry at that time…. And sad to say even now.

I think Janet looks like her most of all and honestly when no one was talking about Dottie Janet did. Look at ‘Thats the Way Love Goes’ video there are drawings of her. And don't forget Whitney was fighting to play her too! She sung at one crowd saying “We’re all trying to play this woman but I've got the manuscript.” “Ive got the manuscript” was the part she sang. I believe she meant she had rights to Donald Bogle’s book while Halle used the awful book by the manager.

I seen Janet Jackson TCM video on Dorothy Dandridge she idolize Dorothy the most she had the rights to play Dorothy and she even contacted Dorothy manager Earl Mills on playing Dorothy in a movie but Janet gave up on the rights Janet was gonna make her own movie about Dorothy Dandridge when news of a Dorothy Dandridge movie was swirling Janet, Halle, Whitney and Diana Ross was runner up but according to Halle on the Oprah show she got her project on Dorothy done first so she won in playing Dorothy but Janet Jackson still to this day the only female who still talks about Dorothy.

NA'STASHIA VALENTINO DEFRANCO, This is not really accurate. Dorothy's own style and look evolved. Dorothy in the 1940's did not have the arched brows or the red lips. Marilyn apparently was close friends with Dorothy so she likely was influenced by her but no one created MM except Marilyn herself. 20th Century Fox didn't create Marilyn's look. Marilyn had many influences including Jean Harlow, Lupe Velez, and Betty Grable. Dorothy amped up her own look during the 1950's. That's when one see's the arched brows and bright red lips and more of the cat eye make up like Marilyn also had. Those were beauty looks that were becoming popular in the 1950's. But Marilyn already had this look in her films in the early 50's. She just hadn't amped up the look yet, the same with Dorothy. You have made it sound like the studio manufactured Marilyn which is insulting to all the hard work Marilyn really did to create her image. They both were amazing, talented women and there is no need to tear MM down as if she was just a copy of Dorothy. They both were unique.

I thought it was offensive the way the interviewer kept pressing her about why she turned down some movie roles. She handled it very professionally. It's common sense she turned down some parts because she was typecast after Carmen Jones or given demeaning parts as like a maid or slave. She accepted working in Tamango as a slave but turned down a few other movies. It was hard for a black person, especially a woman, to go far in television and he shouldn't be the one to judge her whether she accepted being cast in a movie or not. He may have been smiling but he came across as judgemental that she didn't accept the parts in those few movies he mentioned in the interview.

he asked her specifically if she was going to continue working in musical films and then asked about two roles she apparently turned down in aida and rigoletto, which are operas. i couldn’t tell what the roles were, but those are highly respected operas. i don’t think it’s offensive at all that he’s asking that question! yes in one way it’s being “typecast” as being able to play an operatic character but damn, if someone didn’t come from operatic training and is so good on their first try (carmen jones) people are offering them multiple operatic roles, folks are gonna naturally wonder!

If YOU go to YOU Tube Videos of Marilyn Monroe, you'll see that Dorothy Dandridge's name is never ever mentioned in the comments. All of the comments in the Marilyn Monroe videos are about Marilyn Monroe. I wish we could give Miss Dandridge the same honor and allow her videos to be solely about her, and not mention Marilyn Monroe. There are no videos or actual quotes from any newspaper article, or magazine article where Miss Dandridge mentions Miss Monroe or where Miss Monroe mentions Miss Dandridge. Neither one had any reason to think about the other one at all. They each had their own careers. People keep saying they were friends. There are no documents showing that they knew each other at all.
