Mr. Belafonte discusses his friendship with Dorothy Dandrige, Hollywood's treatment of the movie Red Tails.
Mr. Belafonte provides insight into old Hollywood and what Black actors had to face. Academy Award nominee Dorothy Dandridge's career was greatly limited in cinema because of racism and it could have been a contributing factor to her demise. We thank Mr. Belafonte for sharing his experience in this interview and providing many years of entertainment. He had sell out crowds at many major venues throughout the world during his day and he is beloved by millions. Here in Los Angeles, at Dodger Stadium they still sing "Day-O". Because of her success in Carmen Jones, on February 15th, 1955 Miss Dandridge became the 1st African American actress or actor to sign a contract with a major studio 20th Century Fox. Darryl F. Zanuck was the President. Her contract was for star roles, not supporting roles. This was in addition to her international singing career, singing in such venues as Cafe de Paris in London. Between the date of her contract and her last film, she had starring roles in the same number of films as Oscar Winner Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe. Her death was caused by ingestion of tofranil in 1965. According to her manager Earl MILLS, the week of her death she had just signed a contract for one hundred thousand dollars for two movies and was scheduled to open at Basin Street East in New YORK the Friday of that week.

Otto Priminger also ruin her career by telling her not to accept co-staring roles. The studios ha smaller roles for her in big budget movies but he told her not to accept them, so the parts went to other women who weren't white
Agreed.They where going to have her play diff exotic women and finally when people didn't care they would just want to see Dorothy she would've been up there.Not saying it was a gurantee she would be a Julia Roberts but the studio was working with her.

Dorothy Dandridge was supposed have played Cleopatra y'all understand how much recognition Dorothy would have received playing Cleopatra instead of Elizabeth Taylor? that would have been her biggest movie ever so sad she was talked into dropping out from playing the role and she regretted it.
He took advantage of Dorothy he only saw her as a sex object he was cheating on his wife with Dorothy I don't want to fault Dorothy cause I know she just wanted love and someone to take care of her but she should not have pursued a relationship with a married man he even got her pregnant and made her lose the baby he really took advantage of Dorothy and he could have made her be more bigger in roles she was already big in roles but she could have broke out more if he had helped her more Dorothy being a Oscar nominee should that should have been taken more advantage of.

Her singing voice in Carmen Jones was dubbed. (Marilyn Horne) Also her singing in Porgy & Bess - dubbed. But, she was very lovely. Harry & Sidney's voices also strangely dubbed !

I am so sorry. Still very beautiful. Apparently, the decision makers wanted operatic voices. Harry certainly could have done a lovely version. He wasn't all peppy songs The only rendition of "Danny Boy" that will reduces me to tears everytime is on the album "Harry Belafonte at Carnegie Hall". (Probably on RUclips)

He turned 96 this month. She was born 101 years, so he is probably the only person still living who knew her. To some extent, I thought it was a little egotistical of him to think that her film career depended on himself or Sidney Poitier or that Actresses were dependent on male leads in general. Both Actors and Actresses are dependent on the role being there in the first place. After that, they are dependent on the producer of the movie wanting them for the role. The first film they made together was Bright Road, in which he made his screen debut. It was the story of a Teacher Jane Richards trying to reach out to a troubled student, whom she believed in. Somebody had to play Jane Richards and Gerald Mayer [son of Louis B. Mayer of M.G.M studios] chose her. Harry Belafonte's role as the principal was a supporting role. in Carmen Jones, again somebody had to play Carmen. The producer of the movie Otto Preminger didn't think she was right for the role in the beginning, but after her audition and screen test decided she was perfect for the role. She was the one who garnered all the accolades. Because of the movie, she was the first African Amerian Actor or Actress to be Nominated for an Oscar in a Leading Actor or Actress category, To walk the red carpet and be an Oscar Presenter, the same year she was nominated, To grace the cover of Life Magazine, To appear at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and sign a three-year contract with a major studio, 20 Century Fox for star roles only. In their last film together "Island in The Sun" under her 20 Century Fox contract she got star billing on screen and her romantic lead in the movie was John Justin. Sadly she died in 1965 but during her lifetime, she actually made more films than he did with staring roles. That is not including the 13 uncredited roles she had growing up as a child. She made her first film appearance as part of The Dandridge Sisters in The Big Broadcast of 1936 at age 13.

I agree with his comments about a dearth of leading men for Ms. Dandridge except for this - Hollywood was always willing to experiment with European men for their leading ladies, when casting was delicate.

Dorothy Dandridge daughter died almost 20 years ago now she lived to her 60's and that's a very good lifeline for the condition she had this shows she was taken complete care of along the years after Dorothy died Dorothy loved Harolyn as any mother would to their child Harolyn lived a long life.
