im related to her. she is my great grandmas first cousin. my mom has lots of vids and pics of her. my family love and remember her so much cos she was so beautiful and unique
and nope shes not mixed. we share a white great great something grand father, he was the plantation owner and had kids with one of our great grandmothers. but she is mostly black
Nicki Williams you might have a descent, but honey you aren't mixed. 2 black parents & a great great something grandfather whose white, doesn't make you mixed.
Why does everyone think that she was mixed?? both her mother and father had dark skin and both of her grandparents were black. Just because she has light brown skin and a thin nose, that means she's mixed ?? She's black people, not biracial. Deal with it.
+eletric .lady Dorothy was more beautiful and talented because her beauty wasn't artificial, as Marilyn's was (which peeps tend to forget), and some of Marilyn's talent was actually her physical attractiveness. Dorothy's talent had nothing to do with her physical self.
+eletric .lady Which makes it all the more ironic that I see young blacks (mostly female) wearing Marilyn tops or T-shirts, but no pictures of Dorothy Dandridge on their attire.
+SagesseNoir yeah even Nicki Minaj a black woman in the industry herself has claimed Marilyn as her influence. so that's why women like her wear bleach blonde wigs and weave.
May be so but there were many full black actresses that could of also played the part and did a good job I'm not taking nothing away from Halle berry she did a good job but goes to show nothing as changed in the industry
It didn't help that she was raised by a narcissistic nightmare of a mother, and deprived of her father's love and upbringing. She chose every significant romantic relationship she had on people who were also evil narcissists, the poor Dear.
So true. Her mother was punishing her father. I believe she was jealous of the love he had for his daughters and they probably favored him more. The cruelest thing she did was purposely give him the wrong date of Dorothy’s funeral.
Cortland Hunter I never realized how much her story paralleled that of Lena Horne. Two talented women pushed by mothers who found the strength to defy the standards Hollywood set for Black performers at the time.
I hate to burst everyon'es bubble...about only "Whites" in the Movie / Music Ind. being the only fault of Beautiful & talented Black Artists, being shot down from their deserved positions...what about"Mary Wilson"... of Mo Town, ..during the 1960's...She was the "True"..first big recording star at Mo Town....and the Presdident .of Mo Town..."Mr.Berry Gordy"...was whom suppressed"Mary Wilson's career, and pushed her down and aside, so he could push the Supremes" to the front line...I am white I was a great fan of The Supremes, however ma and lots of other kids also were great fans of "Mary Wilson,"whom got a bum deal from "Gordy" and"Mo Town". ....
Yes, i agree he seemed like a man that just wanted to take care if his girls, but their mother selfishly withheld those privelages, depriving them of their father loving them and nurturing them. This led Dorothy's destiny astray as she pursued men to fill that empty place. Lord have mercy. Her life could have been so different if her mom wasnt fighting her own demons.
O' HI IT'S ANOTHER WAY OF SAYING SHE'S WAS GLAMOROUS IN MY BOOK/ MS.HALLE BERRY PUTS ME IN THE MIND OF MS. DANDRIDGE TOO" ME L♡VE THEM BOTH AND YOUR COMMENT IS JUST AS BRIGHT, LET US ENJOY LIFE AND LIVE IT WITH WARM HEARTS TAKE IT EASY"*¿*"
Jimi Hendrix why must you put one women down to build another one up ? Just simply say she is the most beautiful women you have ever seen leave out the put down of Liz .... it’s not a good look .......it’s a problem that runs deep in ... well I’ll leave it at that your not ready to go that deep
A very beautiful and classy lady. Today she would have been very successful. Born before her time. I wish she could have found true happiness instead of so much tradgedy.
A bitch will steer any gender down the wrong path...like her mother hiding them from their dad and carpet munching her best friend in the company of her pre adolescent daughters in the most socially toxic era for black folks. The first 70 years of the 20th century.
@John Kimber what reason u think her behavior was this way? Yes true we all should take accountability for our own actions. And think of better ways to cope. Some women dont have that strength unfortunately. In the end she just wanted to be loved by man.
+Shondria Morgan , not at all ahead of her time. People like her, never are. They are the ones in the right place, at the right time ... it's the rest of the world that are behind. Sadly, people like her, who've had to bang and knock down doors always end up paying a heavy price for those who will inevitably come after them. They make it easier for others, like a sacrifice if you will, but the burden they carry for doing so is the heaviest load for anyone who's blessed enough, "or cursed enough" to carry it. I never think of her fall toward the end, I just marvel and APPRECIATE how long she stayed strong and carried the weight of it all. Enormously remarkable woman.
Yes, it would have been great. I'm a person who likes to hear it from the person, not stories of what other people said about her. Nobody has any way of knowing what she was thinking at any given time or what her emotions were. People making these videos didn't live with her. They would have no way of knowing about her taking pills and boozed in the privacy of her home. Her videos are always the same stories repeated over and over again. I don't pay any attention to the Gerri Branton interviews. She died 18 years ago. I think she was full of sh-t. In all of her interviews she never had one complimentary thing to say about Miss Dandridge. The Peter Lawford story that she tells sounds like bullsh't to me. I don't believe he would have felt the need to explain that he didn't have a big trust fund. It is true that Preminger didn't think she was right for the role of Carmen at first and she did return to his office with the right wardrobe for the role of Carmen but Both he and Miss Dandridge lived in the LA area. How many times would he have seen her walking down 5TH Ave. in New York. That part of the Donald Bogle story doesn't make any sense. Earl Mills was supposed to pick her up and take her to the doctor about her foot, not the airport. There were no notes found in her apartment. Earl Mills already had the note mentioned. It was considered a will. it's been pointed out that medication during that time, the '60s, didn't have the warning labels that they have today, about maximum dosage, and mixing medication with other medication or alcohol. Consequently, there were a lot of sudden deaths such as hers, Nick Adams, Dinah Washington Pier Angeli, Judy Garland, Robert Walker. and Alan Ladd.

Dorothy lived better than 90% of average whites and blacks especially in the 1960s. Tired of these horror stories. Living in the southern was hell!!! Dorothy achieves everything- fame, wealth, and health. She did those horror things on her accord.
@SagesseNoir lol I don't believe KA4383T has a single clue what it was like to be Black during those times. Blacks caught hell all over, especially in Hollywood. Imagine giving your all and being the best and still not being able to catch a break because of your skin. No one on this page knows the depths of her suffering and could only wish to be as strong as her.
I love learning about talented Black people. Black people have been talented for years and those before us have paved the way for the next generation and generations to come. Thank You Dorothy Dandridge. You were truly a talented Black Queen.
@@melani4111 loneliness seems to be 'a safe haven' for the darkness of a lonely life. i watched the movie just now (for the first time) and was compelled to know more. Sad, is just not the word for someone searching and coming up empty. Pouring water into a basket...i echo your response 'hmmm....true'
Yes, it is very strange. I think the demands of the life of an actress/actor or singer, are so stressful, the artist becomes exhausted and many times slips into depression.
Because most don't know about her. I used to love mm, but when I really found out who she was and what she stood for, I had to stop flaunting the image. DD I like her and she is way more prettier and talented than mm. I found out about DD about 20 years ago and was amazed at her beauty and style. After watching this refresher, she's not one I want to emulate in some way either.
BroccoliBeefed What a VERY foolish question!!! Ella, was a singer, heaveyset, and not really looked upon as a sex symbol of sorts. It was easier for her to be accepted by White America at that time. With Dorothy's beauty, it was difficult to cast her in roles, as she would not be very believable as a domestic, and unless it was an all-Black film, the times would not let her be cast as a leading lady opposite White actors. She was in the wrong time....today, she would likely have been a very big superstar.
@Jill...I'd often thought she'd be the right choice for the role of Bailey should Hollywood or Opray brought the life of Bailey to the screen. By the way, what happened to Latifah? Frankly speaking, I thought her talk show met the mark for those kinds of shows, didn't you?
+Denise Hester They should not have married. Probably they were just too young, somewhere in this film Nicholas admits that he wasn't mature or man enough to handle his responsibilities. But hindsight is 20/20 vision. Too bad he (and she) didn't see that earlier on.
I know. I had no idea they were the "Nicholas Brothers" and one of them were married to Dorothy Dandridge. Where have I been?! I've been watching "The Five Heartbeats" movie for years!
a few idiots say o she can pass for white,or with"WHITE features?"i m here today as a hispanic to say,HELL NO... she look as she was,Light to Light Golden Brown copper skin, gorgeous flawless skin even thru early 40s young older BLK woman. Not white... & died way too young. RIP hermosa.adios 1

TheDejesius No Dorothy couldn't pass for "white" at least in person but she did play non-black characters in several films. In the Decks Ran Red she was cast a Maori from New Zealand and in Malaga she played a racially ambiguous woman of undetermined European origins. In Malaga she threw the producers in a quandary because they couldn't decide what Nationality to make her character. Dorothy was also scheduled to play an Indian woman in the never released Marco Polo and she signed a film contract to play a Mexican right before her death. In the Earl Mills biography it was mentioned that Dorothy had to re-shoot her Bright Road scenes in brown makeup because she photographed too light and the MGM producers thought she looked like a Spaniard.
+TheDejesius she could pass for an African which is clearly what she was. although American)like Ethiopian or Eastern African. people make to much of a fuss when they assume all black people are supposed to look the same as if there is no diversity among Africans that originated without any mixture traits from the beginning
Ruled by Venus no she isn’t .. I am not from Africa.. I am born in America and I have african ancestors back about over 200 years.. I am a black American.. period..
Another tragic product of an overbearing mother who wanted to be an entertainer herself but failed & then puts her beautiful young daughter through hell. Apart from Dorothy, other screen goddesses with the overbearing mother & absent or weak father background were linda darnell, Natalie wood, Yvonne De Carlo to mention a few. They all ended up looking for fathers in the wrong men & having adulterous affairs. It's really not fair what they had to endure but old Hollywood seems filled with stories of exploited young women who were used for their beauty while never making peace with themselves.
Same thing goes on today. Nothing has changed. Dorothy was a beautiful, classy woman. Who, today can say they are classy and beautiful. All we have today is sewage for the most part. Hollywood, has always been run by sickos. Corey Feldman said the biggest problem in Hollywood today is pedophilia and I believe it to be just one of them.
I hate to break it to anyone who thinks that Dorothy Dandridge was of mixed race. Both of her parents, Cyril and Ruby were Black. Although it is probably true that Cyril's parents or grandparents were of mixed heritage. But technically is was 100% Black.
Yes both of Dorothy's parents are black but Dorothy is no where near 100% black. Cyril Dandridge was a light skinned black man and his mother Florence Locke-Dandridge looked completely Caucasian; according to Dorothy Hughes McConnell, who was a friend of the family, you couldn't tell she had a single drop of black blood. Florence was also known throughout the Cleveland community for her striking beauty. Dorothy obviously has a substantial amount of white DNA she inherited from Cyril's side of the family. The average African American woman does not have cafe au Lait skin and European facial features, both traits which gave Dorothy crossover appeal with white audiences.
I don't mean this in a mean way - but Dorothy was as black as many black Americans. She was not special in this way. There are many black Americans that had a white grandparent or great-grandparent. Based on that theory...50% of black Americans are mixed. If that is what it takes to be mixed - then I am mixed and my skin tone is closer to Kelly Rowland. Most blacks I know fall into this category and yet don't get caught up in labels. They just say they are black and keep it moving.
ReneeDreams Don't be so sure about Dorothy's exact genetic makeup. Henry Louis Gates Jr is 50% white according to his ancestry makeup. Both of his parents are also black. He is also much more ethnic looking then Dorothy Dandridge. Condoleeza Rice was found to be only 51% African when she was subjected to a DNA test. The average African American with two black parents does not resemble Dorothy Dandridge, Jayne Kennedy or Vanessa Williams unless there is a lot of mixture down the line. Dorothy herself even admitted in her autobiography that her success was due in part to her mixed race appearance so I don't know why some black posters get in their feelings and up in arms when people question if Dorothy is mixed....It's ridiculous. No Dorothy is not biracial, but in all likelihood she probably had more European DNA then you think
Dorothy was a stunningly beautiful and gorgeous woman! Thank you Ms. Dorothy for paving the way for black girls like me coming up behind you having dreams of acting, singing, dancing and stardom 🙏🏽 if it wasn’t for you enduring all you did there would be no room for us ❤️🙌🏽 Rest in Love beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
American the beautiful???? AmeriKKK the WHORE!! THERE'S NOTHING BEAUTIFUL ABOUT THESE RACIST UNITED SNAKES. That's why I don't pledge no allegiance to that red, white, & blue rag, nor do I stand 4 that FU song!!! Sister was completely gorgeous. And 4 the dummies who think she's biracial she's not. She may have a few drops of that deseased blood in her however she is more ORIGINAL & BEAUTIFUL @ THAT.
You know I always thought that Marilyn sounded baby-like similar to Shirley Temple with her pout and little girl voice (although ST WAS a little girl!)
I am also a fan of the Beautiful Miss Dandridge, "Miss D"... and have been since I was a child in the 1950's.....unfortunately it seems that our "Miss. D"...followed an "abuse syndrome"....as most abused children do as they grow into adults...she was abused by her Mother's partner, and , what she did to "Miss. D" was just so degrading..
Being black in America at that time was just a curse, no matter how talented or brilliant you were the systematic racism would not allow you to fulfil your potential and downright destroy you....smh... imagine if America was different back then, America lost a chance to be the beacon of liberty and to the world only the collective love of racism by the majority white populace prevented this.....such a pity....even today there is a residual sense of this horrible time and hate against a people that literally built America's first major economy..
Dorothy Dandridge was the most amazing actress but as a divorced parent she that suffered with the guilt of having surrendered her parental rights of her daughter due to financial issues surrounding her not having the income to pay for the stay and maintenance of her TMH (Trainable Mentally Handicap) daughter in facility that takes cares for her child. Dorothy NEVER got over it. Everyday, people are investigated by government agencies regarding whether or not a person is a suitable parent for children that are not disable, but it is rare when a parent loses their disabled child for not being able to afford the facility the houses and care of TMH children. I have a TMH child that isn't in a facility that houses and care for children with extreme disabilities. I believe that such place are very cold and impersonal when it comes to nurturing a TMH child and or children with extreme disabilities. We as people need to support those parents to choose to personally take care of their own TMH and or extremely disabled children. Be there is no place like HOME! God willing we can help that person by simply saying keep your head up you are doing a good job!
Dorothy Dandridge was and is the definition of Iconic. Thank you Ms. Dorothy Dandridge for opening the door for Other BLACK WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD with out you there would not be Black Glamorous Actresses that have come after you.
Perhaps if she went to the hospital when she first started feeling the labor pains her daughter would have had a different outcome. Dorothy had PTSD for sure. Beautiful woman. Iconic. We are still speaking of her today.
Her husband should have drove her to the hospital instead of going to play golf. He took the car so she had no way to go on her own. He was immature and foolish young man who wasn't interested in being a husband
I have it in my small library. But I'm puzzled why society writer Geri Branton has not jumped into the mix with a friend girl look into her relationship with Dandridge. They were close, after all. And Geri's husband was the Johnny Cochran of his day. We're blessed to have Donald Bogle.
Bunny Pink Don't start me, please! I'll talk your ears off. I miss Dot horribly! Let me clarify something, Bunny. Geri Branton's husband is the dynamic Leo Branton. Geri, by the way, was the society writer of the Los Angeles Sentinel under the aegis of the Washingtons. There was so much more to Dot than we were given by "Hollywood." They just didn't have it right. Her material, except for "Island in the Sun," was lousy and didn't showcase her talent. Bunny, I disagree with the person above in the video. Hollywood was not a walk in the park for anyone. True enough, the brand was light skin. But Sista Bette Davis didn't exactly sail through those brackish waters, either. And Miss MGM herself, Judy Garland, was fired by the same. And when you compare blonde Frances Farmer's life to that of Billie Holiday, I can't say that fair skin made her life easier than Holliday's. After all, the state of Washington beauty was lobotomized for "modify" her behavior. To end my filibuster, Bunny, please get hold of the biography on Phillipa Schuyler. Wow! Had no idea her life was so tragedy laden. See ya!
Bunny Pink Yes, it can be bought on amazon.com. If you don't at first succeed, try cross referencing. As far as I know, since I'm not personally privy to Hollywood inside gossip, Preminger was not, let's say, a man of high principles. You know, your post makes me deeply regret I can't locate Bogle's must read biography of Dandridge. He puts a lotta meat on the bone. Unfortunately, Dot didn't have Horne's "steel," something I see in Diana Ross. These two are some tough broads, and tough you have to be in the entertainment world. Lena Horne was much tougher than Dot. Bogle points out, too, that Dot has some quiet emotional issues working against her, issues unrelated altogether from any struggles trying to achieve success in "white" Hollywood. What a joke! Look, even in those short snippets we see of Horne at MGM, she stole the show and was therefore a star. Your eyes went right to Horne. Check out her dramatic singing performance with "Love." Poetry in motion. Bunny, please widen your repertory. Read anything about Frank Silvera and Philippa Schuyler. As I say, chil', don't start me! lol
so terribly sad,but there was meaning to her life in spite of all that. and only she could say, if it was worth it all, thats her call, and hers alone to have made.
Yes, and Dot gave her life meaning. It wasn't handed to her on a silver platter. Yet I was stunned (I have her biography in my mini library) that she suffered such inner turmoil.
I see a lot of similarities between Judy Garland and Dorothy...neither had a real childhood or stable families...and both let men, pills and alcohol takeover their lives. Sad.
SagesseNoir No question about the racism. In that sense she certainly had it worse than any white performer, but I wasn't trying to compare them in that way. The similarities I see are simply the manner in which they handled the obstacles/tragedies in their lives.
she was too vulnerable for fame. she suffered from stage fright which should have been a huge red flag. most her decissions were wrong or made at wrong timings, that's enough to turn a soft heart cold..fame is not for everyone. She wanted to settle down to save herself but the men that were around her didn't grant her that escape. she was trapped, and what usually happens when that happens is you know you can not do it alone, there wasn't enough strength or fight in her. Nothing but her self could have saved her. but then again she was a troubled soul, how can you save a troubled soul when you are the one fighting your own demons? tragic.
Say Ji No 😂 are you that much of an idiot?? Sure she'd be elderly but There's so many actors and other people who live past 100....I believe dorothy would still be alive
@@AnastasiaLUVSU Their daughter was most likely autistic. The description of her disabilities seem to point to autism. Many who are deeper on the spectrum tend to have mentality of a child if they didnt receive the therapy needed at a young age. Seems like she was non verbal, but maybe could have spoken with speech therapy at a very young age. With todays technologies and awareness in autism, she would had at least been able to communicate through a tablet or other means and her parents would had known that their daugther knew they were her parents and knew a lot more than they thought, just couldnt verbally get it out. She would had lived a relatively productive life in todays world. Heartbreaking.
Harolynn was BEAUTIFUL ❤👩👧 I wish it was pictures of her as a adult I know in Dorothy's autobiography it stated she had long hair & inherited her dads height
I first learned about her when Essence Magazine did an article on her life and career. I was awe struck by her beauty and couldn't believe I had never heard of her before. When I saw Carmen Jones for the first time I went WOW! She is like a dream come to life. I am sure had she lived long enough she would have received endless celebrations for her ground breaking career. Maybe a lifetime achievement Oscar. Or a Kennedy Center tribute.
...as a Woman of Colour, I have always have Embraced her Beauty, Talent, and Self Awareness asa woman of Colour.......still do.....my Heart goes out for A lot of reasons (self value was a tuff one for her to completely embrace because of the times) but the RESPECT stays the same.......💜💜💜
@Capri M bcuz he wants us to buy the book this is the ending: "one night Geraldine (her bestie) Awoke from a dream when Dorothy replied "oh Geri you see I don't have anything to cry about anymore". That's the ending So u didn't miss much. Hope I helped
*She was neither manic depressant or experienced self-hate. Halle Berry is going on and on about someone she didn't even know.* Dorothy fell into a deep depression due to the failed relationships and second Divorce from the Abusive guy who used her for money. Like her best friend said she would have been happy just being a House-Wife & Mother. She was deeply saddened by her daughter's permanent mental illness due to lack of Oxygen to her brain during birth, something Dorothy always blamed herself for because she delayed going to the Hospital waiting for her husband to come home. Then she couldn't pay for her daughter's care anymore and had to surrender (ward of the court) to a state institution. The Guilt was unbearable.
So she did everything but called on God. Typically what a lot of women going through today. Took that sucker for child support. Being a housewife with no support from that no good husband;👏🏻prayers all she needed

I'm not impressed with Halle Berry's opinion and comments towards Dorothy's life, and to be honest her list of relationships have not been up to par. Of course Dorothy's life wasnt the best but i'm sure many can relate some way or the other. For her to say thatDorothy didnt value herself and relected self hatred makes me wonder if Halle Berry actually looked in the mirror at her own life and relationships...yet alone her film Monster is a perfect example of what she expressed Dorothy lacked as a women and actress. I never saw Dorothy get naked on camera for a role. of course film back then wasnt as explicit as today. I pray Halle Berry actually thinks about the things she expressed in this doc as a retrospect of her life today. I honestly believe that she saw Dorothy's weaknesses and flaws in her own life which caused her to respond the way she did.
You sound really upset by her comments. But really what's the big deal .. It sounded to me that she was having Sympathy for Dorothy not hate. Subtly saying she deserved better. I don't believe she would have taken the role of playing her. If she didn't admire her in some way, or felt she could relate to her. I personally agree that Dorothy didn't value herself much. Strictly based on what she accepted from the men in her life. I've been their and sure a lot of other women have. So Maybe Halle did see a little of herself in Dorothy.
+LaShantell Monique am late but totally agree with you. I too was very disappointed at Halle's comments towards this lady when her life is so flawed. I felt Dorothy's pain no judgments.
i agree as beautiful and talented as Halle Berry is I dont think her decision making reflects her words of wisdom about Ms. Dandridges tragic life..choice in life partner or spouse seems always to be what can pull people from trajedy..if all the men who she was with truly loved her they would have chosen to be with her and maybe could have saved her from herself
I wished someone else played Dorothy Dandridge instead of Halle Berry. It's annoying when those who weren't around when these actors were living and struggling speak on their lives as if they were privy to information. I believe Halle was projecting her life upon Dorothy Dandridge.
Had Dorothy's father been in her life, we wouldn't even know her as "Dorothy Dandridge" the entertainer. He would've protected her and sure in the hell wouldn't have agreed to their fame crazy mama selling them off to Hollywood. Let this be a lesson when it comes to who you lay down with and have kids with. Such a tragic life. #RIPDorothy
Dorothy was a rare Beautiful Brown Sister that every man desired. She did her part in blazing the trail's for other Brown Actor's.She could play any character. I don't care about what I'd said in the video ,I still admire her impeccable acting. Back then they had to do what they had to , to keep food on the table. The 1960s were a tough time for most Hollywood entertainers. Mickey Rooney rented himself out to appear at cocktail parties in FL & had no furniture in his house. Judy Garland spiraled downward & was sleeping on people's floors. Debbie Reynolds went on the musical theater circuit & developed a drinking problem. It was a miracle any of them survived.
Dorothy's self esteem very fragile--perhaps if she had had a stronger inner core like Tina Turner she might still be with us. H'wood was a terrible place for those of color for many years--Dorothy didn't want to play maids--but she was 10 yrs too early to get the roles that Diana Ross got easily with no stigma
She had a no-good husband who no only cheated on her, but then left her alone to bear the financial responsibility of raising their handicapped daughter. So disgusting!
Rain Walker hold up now don’t forget her last husband who mentally and physically abused, used her money to front his club had her work there and drained her financially in every way he could. Her first husband was a 20 something kid he did blame but sometimes as we all know you can mess up royally with a little fame money and women at that age .
I respect Dorothy for firing back at the racist, white, press. She could have been black balled back than and not given any press. Can you imagine not even a Mexican/ Latino, Anthony Quinn was allowed to cross their stupid color line...I wonder how that made Blacks and Latinos feel?
Juan B. Pina , I'm sorry but Latinos had it far easier, always have. Latinos are what every whitey in the summer is trying to look like with their asinine, fake-looking, skin cancer causing tans

@2012endofanerror i think when she pointed out "bad parenting", she was referring to her mom.
im related to her. she is my great grandmas first cousin. my mom has lots of vids and pics of her. my family love and remember her so much cos she was so beautiful and unique
and nope shes not mixed. we share a white great great something grand father, he was the plantation owner and had kids with one of our great grandmothers. but she is mostly black
Nicki Williams you might have a descent, but honey you aren't mixed. 2 black parents & a great great something grandfather whose white, doesn't make you mixed.
Nicki Williams so true, because having another admixture from another race changes genetics. Most, if not all, Afro Americans are mixed race

Why does everyone think that she was mixed?? both her mother and father had dark skin and both of her grandparents were black. Just because she has light brown skin and a thin nose, that means she's mixed ?? She's black people, not biracial. Deal with it.

Beautiful Peache I think her mother was full black

that sounds about right. her mother was beautiful too. i'd always thought she was half white, but clearly they were often powdering her face.
She was far more beautiful and talented than Marilyn Monroe and I think even Marilyn herself knew that which is why she admired her.
+SagesseNoir I was just saying this...I just started having my own novelty shirts made with dorothy on it

+SagesseNoir yeah even Nicki Minaj a black woman in the industry herself has claimed Marilyn as her influence. so that's why women like her wear bleach blonde wigs and weave.

So true. Her mother was punishing her father. I believe she was jealous of the love he had for his daughters and they probably favored him more. The cruelest thing she did was purposely give him the wrong date of Dorothy’s funeral.
That tends to happen when children are raised by narcissists

I feel sorry for Dorothy's father, having his kids ripped away from him like that. They were literally kidnapped from him!

Wouldn't it have been great if Dorothy lived long enough, to tell her own story? But I appreciate you for uploading this!
She was not "mixed" she was a black woman period. Stop believing Wikipedia. You can clearly see this woman has TWO BLACK PARENTS!!!

BroccoliBeefed
What a VERY foolish question!!!

No. She could not pass for white at all.
Yea she couldn't pass for white, but she could pass for any other darker skinned races, Indian, some Hispanic.

The average African American woman does not have cafe au Lait skin and European facial features, both traits which gave Dorothy crossover appeal with white audiences.
it's in her Autobiography. She was mixed.
you see the picture of her parents they are black but their grandparents could be mix
ReneeDreams
Don't be so sure about Dorothy's exact genetic makeup.

Choclatcotton Bitch! How Do You Know Who She Called On Or Did Not Call On!

Her daughter passed away some years back in a nursing home
Perhaps if she went to the hospital when she first started feeling the labor pains her daughter would have had a different outcome. Dorothy had PTSD for sure.
Beautiful woman. Iconic. We are still speaking of her today.
Her husband should have drove her to the hospital instead of going to play golf. He took the car so she had no way to go on her own. He was immature and foolish young man who wasn't interested in being a husband
so sad what happen to Dorothy she was so beautiful and aspiring. I loved her biography.
Neither one "LET" alcohol take over their lives, it's a disease...no choice.
she was too vulnerable for fame. she suffered from stage fright which should have been a huge red flag. most her decissions were wrong or made at wrong timings, that's enough to turn a soft heart cold..fame is not for everyone. She wanted to settle down to save herself but the men that were around her didn't grant her that escape. she was trapped, and what usually happens when that happens is you know you can not do it alone, there wasn't enough strength or fight in her. Nothing but her self could have saved her. but then again she was a troubled soul, how can you save a troubled soul when you are the one fighting your own demons? tragic.

She was so incredibly beautiful
Heard the name before, never new the beautiful courageous life story behind it. I'm now devouring anything and everything Dorothy Dandridge!
Dorothy would still be alive if she would have married the man who called her angel face Earl Mills.
Pat Washum No she would not still be alive lol. She would be waay too old to be alive
Pat Washum I Agree 💯percent
I believe Earl might of been the one for her
Say Ji No 😂 are you that much of an idiot?? Sure she'd be elderly but There's so many actors and other people who live past 100....I believe dorothy would still be alive
Halle Berry did an excellent job on her movie playing Dorthy Dandridge.
what couldn't her husband help her with their daughter.
Dee B. smh it's sad after she tried so had to do it all herself he couldn't just sign a check to make sure his daughter would be okay
Wawa M Cause the daughter was retarded.
Wawa M sorry.for real
Heartbreaking.
so sad she was so beautiful
i agree mamita yep
died way too young only early or mid forties smh
sad ,very
adios

How strange, today is Aug 23, 2019, exactly 20 years from the date this episide aired. She was one of a kind, Ms. Dorothy!
Harolynn was BEAUTIFUL ❤👩👧 I wish it was pictures of her as a adult I know in Dorothy's autobiography it stated she had long hair & inherited her dads height
she was Halle Berry before there was a Halle Berry
Being black in America! Damn
Jack stole all her money and left her.
Not to bash Marilyn Monroe but Dorothy didn't have any plastic surgery or any other type of work done either.
...as a Woman of Colour, I have always have Embraced her Beauty, Talent, and Self Awareness asa woman of Colour.......still do.....my Heart goes out for A lot of reasons (self value was a tuff one for her to completely embrace because of the times) but the RESPECT stays the same.......💜💜💜
Why does it just abruptly end like that? Wtf....
Capri Meeks RIGHT?!!!!!!?!?!?
@Capri M bcuz he wants us to buy the book this is the ending: "one night Geraldine (her bestie)
Awoke from a dream when Dorothy replied "oh Geri you see I don't have anything to cry about anymore". That's the ending
So u didn't miss much. Hope I helped
Thank you Rachel Howard.
Just watched a Doris Day doc . She also had abusive husbands and some that stole her money - what makes these lovely talented ladies go for such horrible men?
@@caramelkimmiekim8272 eh .. that’s callus of you to say when you only watched this half pitted documentary that doesn’t really share too much because at that time they did not care to do so.. also based on her upbringing she was probably never taught to worship.. sense her moms was a lesbian women who took her away from her father along with her sister. She also was married to a black man first who left her. I done believe she was praying for suffrage.. her life was inevitable the minute she was born..
@@caramelkimmiekim8272 also let’s not forget the constant abuse she got from her mothers lover.. where or whom she should turn to when not taught to do so ?
Yes it was “unbearable “ and she was trying to get her back that same year before she passed away.. it was inevitable.. she reminds me of my grandmother a lot.. who was just as beautiful as she and suffered with anti depression and gained weight from the process and lost her beauty and ended up with a terrible husband back to back
I'm not impressed with Halle Berry's opinion and comments towards Dorothy's life, and to be honest her list of relationships have not been up to par.
LaShantell Monique I agree in my opinion she’s very much like her in the way of relationships and much more
I wished someone else played Dorothy Dandridge instead of Halle Berry.
#RIPDorothy
I cant imagine what these people went through. Never depend on others to love you. Love self first.
Hmmm Dorothy Dandridge died in 1965, Halle Berry was born in 1966
WHAT THAT STATEMENT SUPPOSE TO MEAN?
@@christopherrockerfella9306 right smh
Right! Reincarnation
CHRISTOPHER ROCKERFELLA maybe he saying that Halle Berry is Dorothy Dandridge Re-Carnation.
I swear y’all annoying 🙄
Dorothy was a rare Beautiful Brown Sister that every man desired. She did her part in blazing the trail's for other Brown Actor's.She could play any character.
I don't care about what I'd said in the video ,I still admire her impeccable acting. Back then they had to do what they had to , to keep food on the table.
She may be gone ,but she left her name to carry on.
RIP -Dorothy

I love Dorothy Dandridge. I wish she were here today. Beautiful talented woman. Thanks for posting this because it's hard to find things on her life. Carmen Jones was a great movie!
Ahh she's so pretty. So classy and elegant.
Well, it's now June 24th, 2018 and you still haven't uploaded the last minutes that are missing
😂😂😂😂😂
It’s now October 1st 2019 still nothing smh
sad story for a beautiful black actress/singer/dancer lady. rip ❤

Hey what happened to the end of the documentary? it just cut off
+keithchanner Yea what happened !!! so wanted to see the rest !! oh rats !
keithchanner I wondered the same...
I think its messed up how they kept Dorothy Dandridge hidden, but still keep Marilyn Monroe"s legacy alive.
Not hidden - who hid it?
It just breaks my heart that no one could find her daughter 😢
But didn't she put her daughter on bus and left her there
She died in 03 😥
Her daughter was in the Asylum and died there at age 60 in 03 before Dandridge died she was going to get her back before that time unfortunately, she passed away unable to get that far…
@@caramelkimmiekim8272 and no that’s incorrect she was left at the Asylum and died there till the age of 60, Dorothy was unable to take care of her… she was too broke and couldn’t afford it.. she had no choice ..
@@caramelkimmiekim8272
I am curious as to why you would you leave such a comment.
"We are all standing on someone's shoulders." - Ruby Bridges, thank you Miss Dandridge for paving the way for me as a Black creative. 😘👑 REST IN POWER
Harold Nicolas abandoned her & his daughter, when needed the most. Otto Preminger controlled & rejected her: didn’t perceive her as “marriage material.” She was good enough4 him 2use her body, but not good enough 2marry. Jack Denison never loved her. He used her 2perform at his failing night club. The pathetic men n her life drained the life, gifts, & talents from Ms. DD. Trust n your own abilities Daughters. Be confident & self-sufficient. Never place your life n2 a man’s hands, nor anyone else’s for that matter. Love yourselves, first.🦋
she was a great beauty gorgeous woman great actress
She was a black woman at the right time!
Somebody had to go first!!
It killed her in the process but wow such and amazing legacy.
True
@@tammybenaytv4631 also true
True. USA IS RACISTS COUNTRY
AMEN! Dorothy was a natural beauty!
Beautiful lady
windstorm1000 uj
She had a no-good husband who no only cheated on her, but then left her alone to bear the financial responsibility of raising their handicapped daughter. So disgusting!
Rain Walker hold up now don’t forget her last husband who mentally and physically abused, used her money to front his club had her work there and drained her financially in every way he could. Her first husband was a 20 something kid he did blame but sometimes as we all know you can mess up royally with a little fame money and women at that age .
@@twalston01 Your answering a racyst troll put in this video to keep Black men and women fighting each other, don't let em fool ya!!!!
I'm generally not fond of celebrities, but my heart goes out to Dorothy - she was treated badly by so many people... 😔
BroccoliBeefed
Latinos who were white, like Desi Arnez,Mel Ferrer, and many others were accepted as white and had few problems in Hollywood. If they were dark skinned, well that's where they would have had problems.
