once you sign in to your microsoft account it will be activated on the pc you installed it on i work on my own pc's and i never had to take it in to a shop
it is not free ... it activated on your PC simply because your computer had a valid key... it is not free for anyone that just wants a Windows 10 on a PC that never had windows before
