I can't believe we have an site like this at our finger tip you are doing a great service thanks for taking the time and effort to put these videos together good sound and quality
Thanks for helping a person like myself, who has never sailed but considering it. breaking down the various types of boats , prices and realistic expectations between ocean crossing and coastal - island hopping !!! It's helped me asses my focus on a first time purchase.
That’s amazing , I’m always happy to answer any questions so don’t hesitate to ask. I generally advise people to start with a production island hopper such as a beneteau, kind of get a feel for things and see what you do and don’t like. If you decide you want to cross an ocean depending on the beneteau you initially get it can absolutely get you there
Good video!! My 1st boat ever was a 1978 Catalina 30'. Bought it for $7,500 in the summer of 2018. 30hp Westerbeke Diesel only had 525 hours on it. It was in great shape and I put very little into it. Sold it in 2019 for a profit to buy a 1982 Island Trader 38' Ketch Rig In pretty good shape also. I paid less then what i paid for the Catalina 30. . Deals are to be had... You just need to take your time and seek them out... 😎⛵
Thank you for posting this. I’m partial to Sun Odyssey. Now that I’m 46, I have scheduled every 6th week as a week off. Guess who wants a sailboat for trips between Bahamas, FL Keys and Cocoa Beach :)
I was actually blown away when researching the hunters for this video. What you can get with a hunter for the price right now is absolutely amazing . They are perfect island hoppers and you could easily spend years just cruising the Caribbean on one and be perfectly happy
Can you please make a video about steel boats? I want to get a sailboat that I can take to Alaska, Greenland, etc. But I don’t know where to start. Thanks for the info!
@@ChasingLatitudes well I just hear that they are the best for sailing in places with ice. I’m curious about how to find one, what is a fair price for one, and what the pros and cons are. There are a few videos here and there on RUclips, but I’m curious what you have to say about them! Thanks
Unfortunately, most of the sample boats you showed as examples were in Europe. That’s okay if you’re in Europe, but if you’re in the States, you’re probably not going to fly to France or Croatia for a $30-$40,000.00 sailboat ⛵️
I agree, I went to the Caribbean for mine. I’d be happy to make a video on more ways to save money when purchasing a boat, I already made that has lots of info and I’ll link it below ruclips.net/video/LSxcn5-i5go/видео.html
I am in Australia i would like some information regarding web site(US sites even) where can find some of these yachts as i'm looking to purchase.. please not just answer "google" lol Thanks form down under.
Yachtworld.com is a decent place to at least start your search and get an idea of prices , boats on there are listed world wide so most likely will have some in Australia, if you can’t find what your looking for in there let me know and I will send some others
Depends, Like I was saying in my other response to you , joining the patreon for only 30 cents a day and I will hop in voice chat with you , share my screen and we can go over numerous boats together, will be easier for me to explain in detail that way. My patreon doesnt charge per video it charger per month so its ten per month and you can ask as many questions as you would like. Much easier that way and I will explain how you can get the deal of the century
I tend to think of Catalinas as unremarkable starter boats for those who want to lean to sail, those who want to take the occassional three-day weekend trip in protected coastal waterways, and those who want to know whether they or their significant others really will find cruising as romantic as they think.
Check the Northeast US. Florida, Texas, and California have huge sailing communities and prices are sky high. In the Northeast a lot of people are selling now and getting out of the boat game. There are tons of Catalina's floating around the used markets.
Why is it that people like you get so upset over nothing that has to do with you? This is about budget island hoppers that often times new are in the 150k range and can currently be had used for for 30k, when just a year ago they were 60 k but corona has created a buyers market for these .Your all angry because that wasn’t your budget so you got an albin ballad 30 ft 1973 that you put 7k into and now you can do some Island hopping , hey congrats, hats off to ya, the video clearly doesn’t pertain to you.
Sorry about your dad by the way :( my dad just had a stroke 17 days ago and it’s been rough so I can only imagine. Looks like your boat has some issues and if you need any help feel free to shoot me a message
@@ChasingLatitudes my best friend got a sabar 34 for 30 k learned how to sail on her and i still sail her alot she was ready to go very nice and tskin csre off
Beneteau own Jeanneau BTW, personally I would not consider any of the above boats, there are better boats for better prices out there, case in point a steel hull 1972 42' Laurent Giles Aquamarine centre cockpit bermudan ketch just sold for 15K $ in Curacao, in boom furling main and mizzen, Pacific 3 self steering vane, autopilot, both headsails on furlers (cutter rigged bermudan ketch), 11 self tailing winches, 6 KVA Kubota generator, solar, dinghy and outboard, current life raft, SSB, tuner and isolated backstay, 12v Lofrans windlass with 2 105 amp hour AGM batteries. Another example, 1972' Hallberg Rassy Rasmus 35' centre cockpit in Guatemala for 18K I could go on and on. The very last boat I'd ever consider for anything other than coastal cruising/weekend trips is a Bendytoe, sorry Beneteau, they're absolute rubbish. If you're talking about good entry level boats that have both island hopping and proven blue water capabilities in the 30' to 35' range then I'll throw in 2 South African built boats from the 80's / 90's that are far more capable than anything you've mentioned and far cheaper, first is the Angelo Lavranos designed John Robertson built L34'/Holiday 34' (holiday being the detuned cruising version of the iconic L34'), slightly different keel and rig, solid laminate hull and deck, Cape to Rio class winners, great offshore sailing abilities, strong as @#$& and with a good simple functional layout, we've done an offshore race 7 up on a 34' and everyone had their own bunk, you can pick them up in SA for around 20K, really ready to go, as per ocean racing regulations. The other boat is the renowned Oswald Berckemeyer designed Nebe Miura, over 250 were built and more than half have circumnavigations under their keels, a good solid tumblehome hull built to race offshore and at 31' with the transom hung skeg rudder incredibly roomy below, these boats have rounded the Horn, won the Cape Town St Helena return single handed race several times, multiple class winners in the Cape to Rio ocean race and more circumnavigations than any other boat under 31' in history. Again 20k$ will get you one that is pristine and you could leave for an ocean passage within a week
I appreciate the thought out content although this video is about island hoppers specifically and not a single boat you mentioned would I consider a good island hopper
@@ChasingLatitudes have you ever sailed either, just asking, both are great boats. Please try and listen to what I’m saying in the videos. I’m not saying something smaller cannot do it just fine. I set the criteria as large enough for crew/ guests and plenty of storage. A 30 foot boat does not meet the requirements I set in the video. If I do a video on a minimalist approach then I will include smaller boats. A 30 foot boat is not enough for a six person family to sail comfortably on, there is not enough room, that’s not an opinion it’s a fact. Lots of couples here on RUclips complaining about their 35 foot boat not having enough room and if you’ve ever crossed you would know a 30 footer is tight
