This was awesome. My one big advice is to design everything in Illustrator instead using closed paths and separate all your "animatable" parts into layers. This will import beautifully into AE and convert to shapes no problem.
Do you purge projects often? also when chrome browser is open it slows down my computer vastly, and crashes appear. I've changed my Ram to faster and with more Gb and now it doesn't crush at all.
Preach on, Finally, someone who speaks the truth about Motion Design, Rigs, and their limiting ability... Can you please make more stuff, and make the animation available like it was on Hold Frame?
this was incredible man, is the first video that i seen that shows how to make a animation with different angles in after effects, looks like is traditional but its not. AWESOME WORK
wow when i saw this i thought surely you had to go to photoshop to create some frame by frame motion at least..... but how you animated completely with shapes and vectors is crazy! This method seems so unnatural to traditional animating with strokes, but you did it so well. Really shows how software and techniques shouldn't limit you but just be treated as another tool for artists to experiment with. BIG THANKS for the insight!! I'm gonna try this out!!!!
I’ve done some simple characters animated with after effects and when I saw the amount of detail in this one I was like: “there’s no way he’ll do it by just putting rotation points and making new shapes in after effects” And then you did. Holy shit.
such an amazing animation and character design, I've always been looking for character animations without rigging and its been so hard, thank you so much for sharing your process !!!
This tutorial is a piece of perfection. Aimed for more advanced AE users, you'r nailing the core principles in such an interesting and smart way, and the final result is just crazy good and beautiful. Thanks man!
Omg your way of animating makes soooo much sense. Been looking at AE a long time but never thought of animating like this. Would have broke my ass with frame by frame instead. But this is so obvious and yet this is the first time I have seen something like this. I see myself trying this out.
Yea just learned After Effects and it's very complex, though I can manage a few stuff, it's quite frustrating at times. I just hope I can get better with it because you can do so many things with it.
I had to pause the video few times just to make sure the music is from the video and not from me because this is literally my playlist , ps : more than amazing video
This is amazing, you're the first AE animator I've seen that animates like this! I use similar techniques, but you've really opened my eyes to the capabilities of this method, outstanding.
Hey man, Spent 40 minutes on your video and enjoyed every single moment of it , there is this simple sentence you said and that was beautfull:< It's only too many shapes , It's not too hard > Love and respect to your personality and your work .
im a flash/ animate animator and just only recently started doing super basic after effects animations. This just intimidated the hell out of me lol but im determined to learn!
This was so cool and completely changed how I think about animating in AE. Helps cut out the inbetweening and keeps the abilities of frame by frame. Thank you for sharing!
This is definitely faster than frame by frame, at least for me. But I think it also depend on your desired look. Frame by frame gives that cool old school animation style while this, kinda smoother. I been doing frame by frame but seeing this,I like this style more, I'm changing style lol
depends, roughs yeah you could do it in half the running time of the video, tie down , about the same as the realtime, but when you get to clean up no way. and color maybe 3 times as long, so usually you do your roughs, get you're big shape changes/keys, and do a little of both.
In some ways it would be easier to draw it frame by frame, but it's less adjustable. If a client asked you to slow it down or speed it up in certain areas you'd have to do a lot of redrawing. With this I can just adjust keys. Also, if I wanted to extend the animation another few seconds, I could do it way faster than if I wanted to extend it a few seconds hand drawn.
not an animator (yet?) but I love art and always wondered how people used after effects to animate stuff! This video was a blast to sit through and despite feeling lost most of the time, I still feel informed thank you :^) p.s your art is awesome
TNice tutorials the best tutorial I've ever watched! Super informatic and love the softow in wNice tutorialch you taught everytNice tutorialng. Thanks a lot
Even tho this isn't beginner friendly, it lead to me figuring out what I could do with this animation I'm doing for a logo LMAO. So thank you! I always just come back to this video even before I started dabbling on AE cuz it's just really cool ✨
FINALLY i've been searching for you! I spotted this on pintrest a week ago during the Texas winter nightmare and I didn't have power so I couldn't save it but I lost it! I thought I'd NEVER see it
I have been trying to find an animating style I can do with this software I have and I think this is it! Really exciting to start practicing it. And the meticulousness of it doesn’t really bother me it looks really satisfying once done.
Interesting process. You might place sketched key frames at first too, then start tracing one frame, once complete you animate those vectors to become the next key frame and so on and so on.
This is really amazing, and i agree with the fact you mentioned regarding the Rigs limiting the animation in mind due to time i would really appreciate if you can do a small vid regarding how you use the pen-tool so fluently, grabbing points and and how you work with so many lines but still manage to get the right path and move then around without an issue😅
It looks amazing. But it looks like the most sadistic way to animate
Truly
Holy. Moly. This has made me reconsider everything I thought about drawing directly in AE with shape layers.
Have u ever heard about overlord? It's a plugin connecting ae to illustrator. Anything u import from illustrator to ae will be shape layer
@@sahalhabiybiy1812 I can't imagine working without using overload
@@sahalhabiybiy1812 I can't transfer brush strokes using overlord tho... they become weird lines
@@sahalhabiybiy1812 but you can import illustrator files and change them to shape layers anyway without a plugin?
@@emily_232 Yes you can, but overlord makes it a little bit faster and easier though
This was awesome. My one big advice is to design everything in Illustrator instead using closed paths and separate all your "animatable" parts into layers. This will import beautifully into AE and convert to shapes no problem.
I WAS THINKING THAT, I'm so glad I read this comment, you saved me time, cuz i was going to literally follow the tutorial as it is.
Used to do that, Ai file crash broken, regrets. Now I animate with BAO bones n exported png
Obviously he knows that, it is a style some artists opt for.
Overlord - Battle Axe (Thank me later)
If only my after effect doesn’t crash every 3 minutes
Do you purge projects often? also when chrome browser is open it slows down my computer vastly, and crashes appear. I've changed my Ram to faster and with more Gb and now it doesn't crush at all.
maybe if you started using a legit copy of adobe

Preach on, Finally, someone who speaks the truth about Motion Design, Rigs, and their limiting ability... Can you please make more stuff, and make the animation available like it was on Hold Frame?
this video is criminally underrated and under-watched
That’s the proof that when you make what everyone say is madness, you will have an awesome result. Cheers, mate. What a good work!
Love how it looks and moves a lot
Good job man!
Ouuuu I know you man
That's impressive. I've never actually seen anyone essentially draw their animation frames in AE like that. Good work.
this was incredible man, is the first video that i seen that shows how to make a animation with different angles in after effects, looks like is traditional but its not. AWESOME WORK
This was BRUTAL all along, it looks amazing!
Thank you so much I’m making soft so fast now back then I was confused, thanks
even after 4 years it is still mindblowing 🤯🤯

bro, this is…. FAR too impressive.
Wow, this is unbelievable. I'm always amazed by what you can do in After Effects
I’ve been trying to teach myself ae and this just gave me so much insight, thanks for walking us through the process
I'm gonna be honest, i've never thought about working with shapes like this, I'm very impressed how well it works
I just want to say that this tutorial has taught me so many little things that i never thought of doing before thanks, man!
The amount of patience you have...this is awesome
I’ve done some simple characters animated with after effects and when I saw the amount of detail in this one I was like: “there’s no way he’ll do it by just putting rotation points and making new shapes in after effects” And then you did. Holy shit.
i dont understand how you do this without ripping your hair out. AE is terrible for shape building compared to illustrator.
27:03 I saw that frame, someone was watching Inception on netflix 😌
This makes a ton of sense. The only real worry here is the amount of time you need to complete this... The time-lapse makes it look easy. :-D
he said a little bit helpful, THIS HELPS A LOT, thank you
As someone beginning their journey to be a master in multimedia and creative design in their mid-30s this is awesome.
such an amazing animation and character design, I've always been looking for character animations without rigging and its been so hard, thank you so much for sharing your process !!!
I'm amazed you're previewing all this layers at Full!! Also loved the output and how you narrated the process, so relaxing!

I din't see many Ctrl+S there. Awsom process by the way. I learned a lot!!!
i know nothing of AE but your voice is so soothing i watched this video anyway
my jaw was dropped the whole entire time omg this is insane
"little bit helpful" ive been revisiting this for a while and i still learn new things
This is really cool and also seems like hell to animate for a noob like me.

Oh man. Im a programmer, and now I understand why people say my job is boring. :)
1:30, why not use Illustrator?
(after finishing)
That determination to finish is amazing! that's a goal!
2 years later, I've grown
Omg the animation is amazing, and tutorial is really helpful and full of information! Love how you cover up the process with all the detail ♥
Dude thats magic. Awesome work. All these layers...

I love it! It makes me want to further pursue the different tools in After Effects for my own work.
You are a great artist with the worst software. AE is not for character animation, you are making a miracle!
This has a cool scott pilgrim vibe to it. I love it. Brilliant work!
Really enjoyed this tutorial and the explanations along with it, so many great tips to consider! thank you

Scott please, more tutorials! Absolutely loved this one. How long did it take you from start to finish?
No program, rigging software can take the place of hard work, passion and creativity. Great work take time, practice and patience.
What a HUGE job! So many layers... You're giant
It's my first time to watch all the progress of 40m workthrough... but it deserves..
I used this technique in a client's project, very nice, thank you.
Nice, this is a 40 minutes tutorial that will take me like 3 days to finish. Thanks Edwin, nice work.
Amazing work man. Next level stuff.
This is amazing thank you for showing what you can do I’m feeling so inspired 😊🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
that's incredible, really motivated me to go back to after
Dude this is soo freaking cool. I absolutely love those 2 key frame poses. Keep the awesomeness coming. :)
yes After effects done anything if you can then

thank you, great explanation of the process, its nice to see how you overcome things during the process
Cool. Exactly my process too. Spend weeks for this kind of animations.
Oh boy! Great tutorial! And even better Music!
It's a really nice technique, i liked this process I'll try this in my animation . Thank you so much !! 👍♥️
If you start with shapes in photoshop you can alter them in after effects. It saved me a lot of time!
This is fuxking STUNNING!
i cant get over how pretty the thing is
I love the playlist playing in the background, I think we'd be nice friends in music taste at least
OMG .. you need to do way more tutorials of this beautiful work you do
a lot more complexity then what I can think drawing in AE
Im not even into 2D character animations and this sort of stuff but i've watched the whole thing, great video and animation!
im in love with your voice an the way you use after effects for animation!
This is why, animator is the calm person in the world.
