G'day mate, I come from a large musical Irish family in Brisbane 🇦🇺, & I'm the one with zero music in them😂, however this instrument always has made my heart pound, I am now 100% along for the journey, wish me luck. 🇭🇲💪.. thahks for your vids, absolutely outstanding 👏
I am third generation Irish American, my Great grandma [Ha Nora] was from Count Cork, like yourself. I'm glad I found your videos! Playing the Bodhran has "Injected" "New Hope" "Into My Spirit!" Thank You! You Rock!
I'm third generation Irish American, like yourself, my great grandma was from County Cork. Playing the bodhran has injected "New Life" into my spirit! Thank you! I'm glad I found your videos! Peace!

@@bodhran this whole series is a godsend. THANK YOU for making it available. I just ordered an upgraded bodhran and plan to take it with me on all my cycling journeys. Thinking of your India videos, a year ago we cycled across India from Chennai to Cochin and it was fabulous! Just wish I'd have brought my bodhran then to connect on a different level with people.
In light of last nights news here in the UK I’ve decided to upload a new weekly bodhrán series on my RUclips channel called BODHRÁN BOOTCAMP where I’ll share some of me’ favourite bodhrán technical exercises! See if you can carve 5 minutes into your day for some bodhrán and I’ll bet you that you’ll see the improvements after a week of daily practice. Stay strong guys, we can do this R x
Thank you for sharing and teaching. Your lessons are straightforward and comprehensive to follow. I am able to reproduce in practice and work on being consistent with my form and timing. Thanks a bunchimus!
Hi Ruairi - I've just bought my first Bodhran and played some of your teaching videos. They are so clear and helpful so thank you for these. Can you please tell me when paradiddles would be used in playing this superb versatile instrument please ? To me at the moment they don't sound very different from the other patterns but I'm sure they will make better sense to me as I progress. Keep these videos coming please Ruairi ! Kind Regards . . . Eddie ( UK Newbie ).
Hi Ruairi, another great lesson. I've practised every night since July, but having seen this I think I have been a bit wild in my drummimng and not as controlled as the rudiments suggest, but I will work on them during January. Thanks again.
Wild drumming sounds fun! Remember technique is just a means to an end, so dont control too much ;) Make sure to have fun! Hope you the bodhrán bootcamp videos on the way- Ruairi
Hey, Ruairi! Thank you so much for all these exercises, I spend each day half an hour with you/the bootcamp or other execises, it is great! I already made progresses. Ok, nobody teaches me with response, what I am doing right or not. But I think, my skills are mounting up sloooowly. Thaaaanks and a big hug, Susanne, Hessia, Germany
I love these lessons so much! Thank you! I have been wanting to learn to play bodhran for several years and I am so happy to have finally started. Such a joy💗🙏🏼
Love your videos 😊I'm an advanced djembe player wanting to explore different drums i just got myself a bodhran I am improving slowly with your help 😀lots of fun x
I really like these exercises Ruairi. Great for basic skills but also for warm-up or just getting centred on a day when nothing seems to work. lol. Thanks. And Happy New Year!
This video has made think there might be another use for my copy of Stick Control. Works great for the snare I don’t see why switching the Rs and Ls for Ds and Us wouldnt work just as well for Bodhran!
Hey Ruairi - Thank you for these videos!! This old ukulele player is having lots of fun learning this with you! I notice that your drum is not taped - I have read about taping and don't know if I should do this to my lovely new drum. What are your thoughts?
I've been playing the bodhran for a month now. I've been told I'm a natural....really its because I subscribed to your videos. Yet I have seen some players tape the edge and even up to an inch onto the face. Can you explain why they do this and why you don't? Thank you for all your lessons!
Thanks Ruairi! Great set of exercises for the Bodhrán, I have bookmarked this! I run (ran!.. bloody covid) a Cadet's marching band. I found best way to get kids to get comfortable, was to get them simply playing along with repetitive patterns and songs which they know, like 'When the Saints". Are there any great Bodhrán classics that you could teach us?
These are all even 8th notes in the basic snare forms, all of them except the double paradiddle will fit in 4, the double will work in three, and once you have them in those you can start working on swinging them to fit wherever you want really
Love your teaching style. Have you considered adding music to give the various techniques some context? Much like a good math teacher telling students when they will actually use algebra, trigonometry or calculus.

Another superb video. You provide tools and mental hooks that really ground the beginner and create the basis for improvement.

Ruairi, what is the timing for the paradiddles? Can these be used for reels?
These are all even 8th notes in the basic snare forms, all of them except the double paradiddle will fit in 4, the double will work in three, and once you have them in those you can start working on swinging them to fit wherever you want really
would I be right in thinking that the double paradiddle would make a nice slip jig, played fast enough?
Do you have other rudimentary exercises?
Love your teaching style. Have you considered adding music to give the various techniques some context? Much like a good math teacher telling students when they will actually use algebra, trigonometry or calculus.
