Today, I'm going to modify a 2080 Ti graphics card. It's a blower-style 2080 Ti. I want to upgrade it to 22GB and also replace the stock cooling solution with a triple-fan cooler. The method for upgrading the VRAM is widely available online. It's not technically challenging and there are plenty of videos that demonstrate the process. So, it's more for entertainment purposes than anything else. We'll start by disassembling the graphics card, replacing the VRAM chips, and modifying the identification resistors. Alright, the graphics card has been disassembled. We'll prepare a heating platform and remove the VRAM chips. Before removing the VRAM chips, we'll apply some soldering oil to make it easier to work on the solder pads in the future. Now, if you want to upgrade the VRAM yourself, you'll need experience in successfully removing BGA chips, such as upgrading the memory on a router or similar experiences. Otherwise, the probability of failure is at least 90%. This kind of modification is not something that can be easily explained through words alone. It's more of a skill that can only be understood through practice. If you have enough resources, you can start by buying a cheap test card, like a GTX 450, and practice removing and re-soldering VRAM on that card first. Once you're confident in your skills, you can proceed to modify your high-end card. Now, let's get back to this graphics card. The VRAM chips have been removed, and we're now working on the solder pads. Be careful when working on the solder pads because there are many capacitors and resistors around them. If any are accidentally dislodged, they'll need to be replaced. The solder pads have been flattened using a suction tape, and now we'll clean them with a suction cup cleaner. After cleaning, we'll apply a thin layer of flux, making sure not to apply too much, as excessive heat during reflow may cause it to overflow. We'll replace the original 1GB VRAM with single 2GB chips. In total, we'll use 11 chips to achieve 22GB. Typically, this kind of modification is done for tasks like training AI models. If your VRAM capacity is insufficient, you won't be able to run such projects. That's why future high-capacity graphics cards will become more expensive. After placing the VRAM chips, we'll use hot air to reflow them. Usually, a temperature of around 400 degrees Celsius and heating each chip for about 20 seconds will be sufficient. However, the exact time may vary depending on different people's experience and equipment. Now that the VRAM has been reflowed, let's connect the card to a computer and see if it powers on. The card has reached stage B2. It should reach stage 9C, where we can see the ASUS logo. Although it powers on now, let's not celebrate too soon. We'll test the VRAM to ensure that all the solder joints are good and there are no faulty chips. Alright, luck is on our side. It's a successful upgrade. Now, since we want to change the cooling solution, we also need to relocate the rear power connectors to the top. The display shows 22GB, so let's run a 3D Mark benchmark to see if everything is working properly. The 3D Mark test is complete, and due to the low temperatures, it passed without any issues. So, this card has been successfully modified and is working fine. That concludes this video.

Yeah it's easy, just heat it up until the chips are removed. I can do it, but to do it successfully would be the question. since the solder points are too small, the risk of short circuit is high.

Yes, it needs to be modified or flashed with a different Driver or VBIOS that's confirmed to work with the VRAM mod.
Some cards like the RTX 2070 or RTX 3070 already have support for 16GB in their Drivers (Nvidia just never actually released 16GB variants) so you can easily mod and get them running without much issue. Cards like the RTX 2080Ti or consumer RTX 3080s (despite there being legit - but rare 20GB variants) have no native support for the increased memory in their drivers And furthermore, you would need a modified driver to make proper use of it which will either be from some fishy Chinese market selling modded mining cards from leftover stock as they upgrade their farm and/or try to liquidate assets, or are under NDA from legit companies and are very hard to find. There's a reason this video is in Chinese and is using English TTS while directing you to their eBay listing to buy their cards.

  • @predatortheme

Guys, dont fuckin do it if you never done bga-level repair and you got the proper equiptment. I killed 4 gpus for lack of experience (from 960, 970, 1060 and 1060, there are a tons of things you want to think about, you need a dehumidifier (100 degree oven/ put the card in for atleast 20 hours) you need a bottom heating plate for bga repair work, you need a decent heat gun, flux, etc, if you got a function 2080ti, dont do it!
Also, you need properiatary tools like Nvidias MODS/MATS testing tools which are NOT available unless you go on the darknet/repair forums, so if you dont have these tools, dont touch ur card...
    ... dont!

    • @CheezburgerBrown
      @CheezburgerBrown Месяц назад

MATS/MODS are available all over the web. Easy to find. You don't need to dehumidify or to cook the card beforehand, not even sure why you think that, and you don't really need a board heater, but it is recommended. All you need is a decent heat gun, a decent iron, good flux, and a little bit of practice. If you've praticed on 4 cards, you should be well on your way by now, and shouldn't still be having failures. You might seek out some professional advice if you are still having issues.

    • @niio07

It's not to rip you off. Soldered memory chips, especially VRAM provide better signal integrity, speed, and performance. Trust me there's a lot of ways companies try to maximize profit and minimize cost. But, the design decision to solder memory chips is prevalent and I would gladly take a devices with soldered memory over being able to upgrade it.

400°C is too high for a reflow.
You should use 300 max with a preheater set at 250°C and let the board have enough heat (180°C) before applying the 300°C on the top.
Never be impatient with temperature or you'll instantly kill the chip for sure.
Just let the temperature increase slowly and let the PCB absorb heat little by little.
In my experience, Ram chips hate high temperature. If you use more than 350°C for more than 10 seconds you'll definitely kill the chip.
    So in conclusion:
1- preheat the board with a preheater (heating plate) and let it reach 180°C
2- then apply 300 - 350°C max to melt the solder and remove the chip.
3- patience is your key. Never reach the required melting temperature too quickly but let the board absorb heat and wait patiently.
