Thank you Johannes for submitting your video to be featured in Student vs. Professional this week! If you want to submit anything, it's at adamtanpercussion.com/submit :) And yes don't forget to subscribe to make sure you don't miss out on next week's episode featuring the most epic interview guest I've ever hosted... the one and only GARY BURTON!!! I still can't believe he's coming on the show. It's going to be amazing :) #TheStudioFamily
Thanks for featuring my video! Never thought about the Teenage Dirtbag reference haha! 🎸 Also check out my other (newer) videos! btw upgraded my Vancore to an Adams! ;)
I think difference on how we generally play rolls and phrases a lot of the times has to with the acoustics in the given room, and would/should be played differently. Ivan playing in a more "dead" practice room has to give more in order to get a consecutive note, but playing exactly like that in a church would be a mess an you would loss clarity. Playing in a room whit more acoustics like Johannes did ( him hearing hearing probably even more of it then we herd thru the microphones) it makes sense to give it more time and air. Maybe even Ivan would do it differently in a concert hall setting.
You are spot on! Acoustics makes a big difference for sure. I've seen Ivan play it slower and drawn out at PASIC with mics in a big hall and it definitely sounds super effective too ☺️
It’d be interesting to see the sheet music too at the same time as the performance clip for those of us who haven’t played the piece or aren’t familiar with it. Might make it tricky from a copyright standpoint, but it would add another level of learning to your already excellent videos. Thanks for the great work!
Yesss the main thing is copyright, and as a fellow music publisher myself, if I add the score excerpts to the video then it's very unfair to the composer. But I get what you mean! Maybe next time I can put some excerpts but not the whole thing, or if a composer is kind enough to give us their permission to show the score :))
Ivan Trevino is a great composer I’m learning catching shadows and it’s amazing to play and listen to amazing music by an awesome composer also awesome vid!
Been wondering, when i received the score I watched both of these performances and there is either a printing mistake in the last recap section.......bar 108...or everyone just plays it the same as written the first section at bar 28.... including Ivan....thoughts, Adam?
Basically any general mallet series would be fine, with a softer mallet in the bottom like Ivan's doing it. I've played it with my Pius, Van Sice, Nanae Mimuras, and Zeltsmans and it's all fine :)

GARY!?!? oh that’s gonna be fun!
I’ve seen Ivan’s video like 100 times and I just now realized he’s wearing a white t shirt some boxer and no shoes

13:31 I'm so glad you addressed this, I strongly agree with you!
Hahahaha right 🤣
Yes! This is a great piece! I played this for my college audition. My interpretation was more like Ivan Trevino’s until around measure 58.
