    Thanks for watching this week's video! I think Markel was super brave to submit his audition video to the show - so if you have anything to suggest or just want to say he did a good job, leave a comment below (keep it respectful of course!) ⬇️ And as always, you can submit anything to the show at adamtanpercussion.com/submit ✅
    ALSO - to everyone who's asked about my merch, I'm dropping some new designs soon based on retro Japanese style, but in the meantime you can check out the current merch collection at adamtanpercussion.com/merch 👕

    Odessa is a very difficult piece, so if Markel was using it to audition for undergrad, that's a very bold (and respectable) move

    Here's proof of how quickly our art and repertoire are advancing! The newest generations are setting the stakes even higher. We can all agree that that is a BEAST rep for undergraduate auditioning. I hope he continues play for a long long time!

    This is an undergrad audition? With 2 graduate level pieces? And minor tweaks in technique and performance that could be adjusted in a couple of weeks or less? Jeez this dude is an absolute beast

  • @DeeboComing
    @DeeboComing 2 года назад +9

    Asventuras is a senior recital piece. Arguably a graduate level senior recital piece. Most definitely not an audition piece though 😂 no judge wants to sit thru that (even though he did great!!) Because a third of the way thru it, we've seen all we need to see. (You're in lol)👌🏾✍🏾

    In my opinion, I think he should have used newer mallets for Vienna and I am with you on everything else. I am not a professional and I am 15 and mainly play vibraphone and marimba. His snare performance was amazing and he has very good technique throughout.

    Dang. The dude is gonna be a beast through his career. Especially considering he is only 16. Im 20 and i couldnt play odessa all the way through (I started playing marimba almost 2 years ago though but never really devoted a lot of time to it. Until I bought my own after highschool 😌.) Honestly i dont even know if i'm going to college for music or not(or at all). I can't decide 😕 and i'm really intimidated by it. Like will all that money be worth it? I know that everyone is go8ng to be way ahead of me as well. Dang this really made me get all existential

      If you are passionate about music I'd say go for it. You'll learn so much more about music and I think you'll find that with enough dedication you will be just as (or more) amazing as your peers!

    I also used odessa as an undergrad audition piece but I played with the idea of ripple rolls for the roll section because I always found that the roll section always sounds very harsh. (If you don't know ripple rolls, mark ford recently made a video about them)

  • @jfparkerjr
    @jfparkerjr 4 года назад +3

    I Agree! I think Markel did a GREAT JOB! The only thing I would suggest is that he get another set of Marimba mallets. Medium and Medium Soft (maybe) to smooth out that Choral section of the Odessa. Keep up the good work, Markel.

    Hi Adam! I am planning on auditioning into an undergrad program for percussion. My main strength is in mallets but I will need to perform on timpani and snare drum as well. Do you have any recommendations for what pieces to look for or use for auditions? Thank you!

    He needs to work on his dynamic contrast I can tell stick instrument are his weaknesses & mallets r his strong point. Needs different timpany mallets for different dynamics sounds. His technique is good but needs much improvement As 4 the last
    Piece he needed 2 change mallets mid way for the lower octaves.
    He needs 2 up stick & down stick in 8 or 4 counts to make it look more organized
    His snare needs work. For his sticking overall technique.
