  • In Week 2 of our 14-week Striper Migration Report videos, Assistant Editor, Matt Haeffner, checks in with local tackle shops in New Jersey to get the scoop on what early-April striper fishing looks like this year. Matt talks with Mike Gleason of TAK Waterman in Long Branch, and Tom Pagliaroli of Creekside Outfitters in Waretown, and they discuss Delaware River stripers, targeting bass on north Jersey's mud flats, and the smorgasbord of bait in south Jersey, from shad and bunker to herring and spearing.
Fish in the upper 30-inch class continue to follow large schools of bunker into southern and northern New Jersey, stripers are running up the Hudson River, and a small wave of early migrators recently squeaked through the East River into western Long Island Sound, where they're being intercepted by surfcasters and kayak fishermen in western Connecticut and the western north shore of Long Island.

Fished the Hudson at Piermont Pier on 4/9. Fishing slow but got one at 29 inches. Saw a few more from 29-31 inches come up (all released). Big ones not there yet.
