The Alert system (called an "alert-er" in the US, where I'm from" is what makes the long loud beep you hear; it's part of the Train's safety system. If the Engineer does not turn the "Alert-er" off when it beeps, it automatically turns on the brakes, and stops the train. It was invented to stop "run-away" trains, in case the Engineer is injured or dies while the train is moving.
