  • Tag along to Milan, Italy for a behind the scenes visit with designer Nicolo Castellini Baldissera. See how, upon returning to his native city, Nicolo transformed a mere white box of an apartment into a colorful, eclelctic and personal home, reflecting his many travels and love of northern Morocco (be sure to watch our visit with Nicolo in his Tangier home • At Home in Tangier wit... ). Hear how he used saturated hues, trompe l’oeil and specialty paint finishes to bring the outdoors in and a golden glow to evening spaces. Learn how Nicolo’s family, a distinguished Italian design dynasty, has influenced his career and remarkable eye. And join us as we also visit Casa degli Atellani, Nicolo’s ancestral home, where his great grandfather, the renowned architect Piero Portaluppi (of Villa Necchi fame) restored, renovated and expanded the original Renaissance palazzo. As a member of Milanese inner circles, it was only natural that Nicolo follow up his first volume, Inside Tangier, with a similar look at interiors in his home city, Inside Milan, just published by Vendome Press. You don't have to be a wealthy European or American blue blood to have an artist, eclectic home as this channel may seem to suggest. In my 750 square foot apartment in Chicago, I painted a 19 foot landscape that wraps around two walls in the living room. In the bedroom the walls are hand burnished gold and the ceiling is a cross between an Arabian nights tapestry and a 1920s supper club. All it takes is some paint and a vision. Scour unique items from flea markets and estate sales and you have the same atmosphere as these even if significantly smaller.

I think it's more for inspiration. But I can't help feeling like this is so far from my reality. Which can be depressing but it can also be a nice escape from daily life. When I lived in Mexico I got to do some basic design experiments, like different bright colors for each room. But there aren't any thrift stores in Mexico so finding neat things was hard. But we made do and got creative sometimes. My husband made me a little desk out of an old wooden gate. And I put plants in glass containers, either from food or bottles. We painted a mural on one of our walls. You can have a similar artistic designed life on the skimpiest of budgets. Back in the US, can't really do all that but now I have thrift stores! And photography!

His Tangier home was one of my all time Quintessence favourites - and now Milan! Its a riot of colour yet placid, peaceful and relaxing, the guest bedroom is wholly inviting. You could only feel joyously happy in this apartment, he has banished doubt and depression. It was lovely that you included a shot of his father welcoming him with a kiss, those of us who are not Italian know that in Italy family is everything, even more important than interior design and decoration! Thank you for letting us into another world.

Once you move abroad, you are forever split between your origins and the new country and adventures you begin to love so much. I can very much imagine the joy Nicolo is feeling to return home, especially to such an incredible legacy & hometown. As a gypsy myself, I have been contemplating a lot on the role of design in my life and truly, it is the capacity to create and recreate "home" wherever in the world you find yourself as well as to cultivate special & memorable environments for others to enjoy and share.

OK, somehow I missed the release of this in my notifications!!! First of all, the commercial! Those place cards! Going to the site NOW! Secondly, what a provenance of experience from all the places Niclolo has lived and how much it shows up in his home - there is a purity in that and it rules over trend and definitely sans and kitsch-i-ness! (Kitsch is a term applied to art and design that is perceived as naïve imitation, overly-eccentric, gratuitous, or of banal taste. The avant-garde opposed kitsch as melodramatic and superficial affiliation with the human condition and its natural standards of beauty.) I'd move in with my father and aunties if they owned that property and support the custodial future of such a lovely home too! Kudos!

I spend a part of the year in Milan. It really seems like there is a maximalist style that is unique to the Milanese. Somehow they seem to nail maximalism without putting too much thought into it. Of course, NCB's place had a large Moroccan influence but my point can be seen in the book he just released on the Milanese home.
