  • This 30 minute interview was made 2012 in Hannover during the filming of Grandmaster William C. C. Chen's new DVD „Bodymechanics of Tai Chi Chuan". There was just not enough space on the DVD to include it. Watch the trailer of the DVD here: • Video
In the first third of this interview William Chen talks more about his biographie. How he moved from Mainland China to Taiwan, Hawai and New York City and how he met Prof. Cheng Man Ching. The last two thirds are about his training with Prof. Cheng and his own tai chi chuan school in New York. Hope you enjoy it!

Very nice and clarifying interview about Professor Cheng, his Tai chi and William Chen Tai Chi lineage roots.A piece of real history - not like the nowadays show-off Tai Chi scenario!
    Many thanks!

Nils. This the best. Thank you! These origin stories that give us the history and evolution of Kung-Fu are all important to our martial arts culture. Thanks again. Excellent. Inspiring. And this tradition is not dead. I have had several students, but only one in-door disciple. I can relate. My students saw me about twelve or maybe fifteen hours a week access. But my one disciple has almost 24 hour access. He watches, he practices, he learns. And I hope he will become the next lineage holder in our long history. Peace.
Overcome the darkness. Return the Light.

Thanks you for this. I attended a couple of seminars with Master Chen in the '90s and it's great to see him doing well.

one of the very best interviews i have ever seen. i have met Sifu Chen, he is as calm, nice, and frank in person as he seems in this interview. Yet, very humble attitude when conveying what he wants to share in person with you.
I SURE I HOP I GET TO BE IN HIS COMPANY AGAIN, oops the caps bandit knows taijiquan too.:)

Hi there, I really like Mr Chen. He has clear eyes, and a healthy teaching philosophy. No secrets. If he needs a ghost writer (award winning writer) with 34 yrs martial arts experience..including 3 yrs tai-chi with Sing Ong (student of Huang Shen Shyan).. I would even be happy to do it for free!

I studied w/ GM William CC Chen in the mid 1980's, early 90's when his studio was on 6th Ave, in Manhattan. He's a lovely person w/ a great sense of humor. He's humble and easy going. Having said that, you didn't want to be hit by him. He's extremely powerful, but you got the sense that he was holding back (thankfully).
If you ever get the chance to take class w/ him at his studio or one of the workshops, DO IT.
He refers to Prof. Cheng as Great Grand Master. I think he himself is well on his way to that status.
    Bless him!

Hello Nils! (This is Brian Phillips from the U.S.) Congrats on getting GM Chen to speak about the 'secret iron shirt' special training! That's the most information I've ever seen him offer about that, - & I've wondered about it for years & years. Nice interview, & thanks for posting it!

I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering about the particular method of iron shirt chi kung Grandmaster Chen was taught. There are books and videos in the marketplace now on this subject. It would be of great benefit to practice the method he demonstrated in his early days. I still gaze at the seated position on his school emblem and wonder where his mind goes at those times. Great interview. Thank you.

Hello Nil. Nice interview. I shared it on my Peaceful Dragon School Facebook page - mentioning your name. I also subscribed to your RUclips page. I began my study with Grandmaster Chen in 1968. There was a lot in the interview that I remember having been told, but some things I wondered about in the interview.

Agree with Chen that Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art. Practitioners should aim that goal. BTW, the iron shirt Chi Gong thingy is real. Cheng learned it from Yang Cheng Fu. Only very closed disciples can learn it.
