Well, it wasn’t a just a hate crime but stealing medical equipment could also get serious consequences. If OP really wanted to, he could get them for stealing medical equipment. That family got off easy.
OMG, poor Emily! What the hell is wrong with people? I have special needs friends and if people assaulted my wheelchair bound pals, they wouldn't live another hour. I can't believe the family got away with that. That is not justice.

With great power or death farts comes great responsibility. Wasn't my dad but a high school buddy that could clear a room while peeling paint and wallpaper at the same time. One time he added an extra hazard to a local miniature golf course by dropping Klingon nerve gas at the second hole and with a very near windless summer evening it lingered and drifted slowly across the course where we encountered it multiple times where we chided him about the Green Fog and laughing as we noticed unsuspecting people walk up to a tee and then get this look on their faces and give people around them the geeze you shit yourself dude look. It's been almost 45 years that friend and myself are still friends that check in on one another and the sole survivors of the crew and I still remind him of that ability to clear a mini golf course. The mini golf course is gone 30 plus years and a Starbucks now sits where the second of the two courses sat.
Legend says that people standing on line for their coffee still smell the world's raunchiest fart come creeping across their nostrils on summer nights when the wind is light.

My late mother ripped one that was so noxious in a candy store in TN that literally sent the employees running to the rear of the store. Then on the return trip home we were headed to SC to see my brother we lived in Illinois. We stopped there. The staff was like oh no she's back.
Story 1: I’m assuming that this happened in the USA. Under the US Penal Code 670: Theft of Medical Products use of aggravated offenses involves the use of violence which is the case is here. The family could have gotten a max sentence of 20 years plus the hate crime charge
