    I’ve got the exact same Kenmore Power Miser 9, installed in 2008. I had cleaned the black pre-filter several times over the years, but in the now 13 and a half years it’s been in operation, I had never cleaned the flame arrestor, or even knew about it for that matter! I was experiencing the same occasional pilot outage, as well as the burner flames having a yellowish tint. Classic examples of starving for combustion air. Since the water heater is in my garage next to a dryer, I knew this was quite likely the issue. Not only did I perform the same cleaning procedure you did, but while I had the burner assembly out, I also used some emory cloth to clean the thermocouple end tip of combustion residue from the pilot as an added measure to hopefully assure the thermocouple is producing sufficient voltage. Everything is working fine now. Thanks for all your great help and information!

    I've installed new water heaters, but never had a problem that wasn't a water leak. i could not believe how much rust was piled on and around my burner! I think the chimney sleeve must have disintegrated. I know the cap did two years ago. Now I have a regular chimney cap. Saved my butt. THANK YOU!!!

    Dear Ghostses,
    Im SOOO grateful today for you, your knowledge, and making and sharing this video! I followed every step exactly and it kept my water heater pilot light going! My water heater is the same model and it was very very dirty! I cleaned it in the method you recommended and it fixed the problem! You saved my family and I alot of stress, headaches, money and time! I bet most cobtractors would have said we needed a new water heater. Grateful for you my guy! Please let me know how I cam donate money to you as a gift! Take care and keep up the good honest work!

      Good deal Andrew! Yeah, a simple cleaning is most times the only thing needed to get them going again. If the cleaning doesn't work, something else is causing the problem. I really appreciate the offer, but you've already paid me by posting it worked to get yours going again. Pay it forward to someone else in need of a little help- or a kind gesture. Good luck to you and yours, G.

      Sound's electric- which is not what this video is about. I can't say, but would believe there is a reset button for each element. You would need to remove that access covers to access them. Good luck, G.

    Thanks. Now, of course, 10 PM, I'm off to do the job so we can have hot shower soon...... ... after some time...
    Well, it was really easy to fix... luckily as my wife's favorite handyman I have all I need. Most annoying was to disconnect the gas line... you have to turn the whole assembly to take it out but it came just fine. Cleaned and back in business, should last another 13 years... Yeah, installed in 2007 and replaced the anode rod once... I think I will replace it again with a flush to make it real good.

      At about here in the video, you can see a green button at the top left of the valve. If you don't know how to light a tank, do a search for that as well. Hope this helps, G.

    I have a power Miser 12 where I replaced the Thermcouple assembly in October of 2019 because the pilot light would not light.Fast forward 2 years later to last a month ago when the pilot light went out.Cleaned the side removable vents which was covered in dust.Worked fine until last week when pilot light went out.Lit pilot which would stay on.but,would go out after the water heater main burners would come on a couple of times where thermostat was set to letter B of C,which is hottest setting. On B,I noticed there was a LOT of orange in the flames.If I turned the thermostat to a setting below A,the pilot would never go out,but,water was just luke warm taking a shower.
    Removed the complete burner assembly where there was a good amount of debris on top of the burner and in the combustion chamber.Cleaned the burner with a wire brush and blew it off with air,cleaned the spark arrestor,both,above and below it,and put it all together. Flame has much more blue in it and water is hot again.
    Your video helped a lot.Water heater was not getting enough oxygen.Thanks!!!

      @@ghostses I did. When the igniter is working, but the pilot won't light it has to be the tube from the control to the pilot. There's a tiny hole where the tube meets the pilot light. I read where it is often clogged preventing gas flow. In my case the hole wasn't clogged but the chamber the tube goes into had trash. Blew it out and everything's working again.
      When you press down on the burner button to light the pilot you create a straght path from the gas supply line to the pilot so if the igniter is sparking the problem has to be an obstruction in the pilot tube or the pilot itself.

    • @ghostses

      Good deal Jim! I'm sure your solution will help others out. Take care, G.

    Thank you very much! Mine is the Powemizer 12, but everything else is the same. Mine only does this the first week of summer...usually the first day after triple digits...why is that? The burner flame will have way more yellow than blue, and it won't stay lit. I clean out everything, bottle brush the flame arrestor, vacuum out all the crud, and back in business. It didn't seem very dirty, but still popped the thermal coupler before it reached temp...any thoughts?

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  4 года назад

      Thanks David. Everything I say is just guessing- so take it with a big grain of salt. My first thought would be from a lack of combustion air (and fresh air)where the tank is situated. They would usually be fed by a short pipe from an attic space into the "closet" closer to the ceiling and a long pipe from an attic space that extends down to about level with the burner. When it gets that hot- perhaps circulation becomes a problem??? My second thought is that they seem to be very sensitive to any restriction and they start acting up. This one wasn't bad but it took very little for it to stop working. I really don't have more that that as to why. I say give a dusting every year and hope for the best. Good luck, G.

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  5 лет назад +3

      The thermocouple on this one was fine Sir- the flame arrestor and pre-filter just needed a good cleaning to make it work properly. But yeah, most of the time a thermocouple is all it takes to get one going again. Take care, G.

    Thanks for the great instructions. I cleaned mine out but may need to do a bit more. I noticed when the main burner has reached the intended heat, it “puffs out” and takes the pilot light out at the same time. Any guidance on that issue?

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  2 года назад

      I'm not sure which cover you're referring to Ryan. But if it's the cover that closes up the opening, I think you either lift it up and tilt it out from the bottom, or squeeze it so it lets loose of the sides so you can pull it out. Hope this helps, G.

    Ghostses, Very Nice work! Hopefully the renters are happy and it keeps working. 12 years seems its getting old but still works! Mine went out about 10 years old but luckily I was able to see the thermocouple broke. So I replaced it and it’s still working 4 years later.
    In your water heaters, do you drain the tank annually or change the anode rod at all? I don’t but think I should.
    I thought about installing a tankless water heater but Richard from “This Old House”, now says they can be problematic for maintenance due to build up of “something” (I forget what) internally and have expensive parts that would need replacing.

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  5 лет назад

      Thanks Mac! She's happy for sure. Yes, this model has some sort of coating in the take I'm pretty sure. I will run it till it's dying breath...lol. I do blow any sediment out of the tanks from time to time. I did do this one after the video, but nothing came out. No to the anode rod. Personally I've never replaced one. Perhaps the quality of water around here is better than others- who knows. I too have looked into tankless and have heard about the maintenance flush that should be preformed. I can't remember what the build-up is, maybe scale from minerals. A self cleaning system would be a cool thing. Take care, G.
