    You just needed a new thermocouple probably or possibly a new electro Magnet. Re[place a thermocouple is easy but make sure the pilot flame only covers the top 1/2 inch and no lower. Also, make sure the location of the pilot is not out of position to the burner where possible burner flame may be hitting the lower thermocouple area.I am an ex Robertshaw controls service school technician and later I sold controls to all the water heater Mfgrs. A thermocouple is made with the tip that has 2 different metals and when the flame envelops the top tip for a minute it creates an electrical current that will energize the electromagnet that the keeper plate sits on top when you push the top control button to hold for a minute. Then it usually holds well. as long as the pilot is on.. eventually they need replacing due to the metal tip fatigue opens the connection if the 2 different metals that were fused together

    Good video dude and the thermocouple is always the first thing to check with problems like this. I have also worked on things and got the original equipment going again, but not when its an easily replaced $12 item. I assume you live way out in the country and wanted to save a long drive till you are out that way again. Otherwise you explained what you were doing, and the cautions you need to follow with the gas very well. I'm no whizz at most things but just learning enough to fix things like this common maintenance issue can save folks a ton of money. You can probably take the family out to eat two or three times on the money you saved over paying a plumber the labor. Even if folks don't want to do it themselves they can avoid getting ripped off by the unscrupulous service people out there. Most are honest good people but you could end up with one that isn't.

      NEVER call water heater companies or plumber always says buy a new one we dont touch it is to old & all that crap to sale u a BRAND NEW water heater ... this problem is always thermalcoupler & usually goes out after 2-3 years, when u change it & u have to buy another one , if U cant do it hire a HANDYMAN not a plumber or water heater company , usually charge u one hour such as under $90 & do that for u, like i did & paid $60 to him to change it for me or if those companies comes charge u $250 for same thing

    Thanks so much. Having similar problem. Told many different things, being that I don't need a thermocouple if the pilot light stays on. I was simply at a lost at that point. New water heaters are so much and no one wants to give an installation price until later. I just can't do that. I will go back and get the thermocouple, check air flow concerns, etc. Then do a lot of praying.

      If the water heater has age on it, sometimes a small leak of a drop of water hits the pilot flame meaning a water heater replacement is due .. A draft of wind can cause the pilot outage. unlikely too much pipe dope was used that blocks the gas. make sure on natural gas you have a regulator in the gas control with. Do not use LP gas on natural gay appliances. if you have a pilot make sure it contains the right orifice in it for the gas of the water heater. LP has a much smaller orifice. Never try ti clean an orifice with a thin wire or anything that could increase the opening. Buy the right size for the gas used. You do not need a thermocouple if the pilot alone stays lit. Look for the alignment of the pilot hood to the burner and adjust the pilot to not too high but enough to fully envelope the top 1/2 inch thermocouple tip only When the pilot is burning the difference in the thermocouple tip down to the section where the wire size is less ( Looks Like tube over the wire ) --that is called the cold junction and the tip of the thermocouple is the Hot junction. There must be 400 degrees in temperature between these 2 points to keep producing the sufficient current to keep the magnet inside the control held open for pilot gas to flow.

      Could be the pilot light has a bit of blockage or the thermocouple is not sitting in the pilot flame properly. These problems are usually more common with lp gas.

    Hi, Thank you for sharing the video. I have a leak where my main burner supply/fuel tube connects into the bottom of that control box. I've tried tightening it extra, taking it off, cleaning it, visually it looks okay... but, it only seems to be leaking even worse. Have you ever had to fix this before? It developed after the water heater was removed and reinstalled.

    Mine happens like that but mine is 11 years old water heater so is getting old , but no leaking or anything works great , few years back, pilot went off , i changed the thermalcouple & worked , when u change the thermalcouple goes out again after 2-3 years...so this time bought Pilot assembly kit from manufacture for $70 & changed it few days ago , so all wires is BRAND NEW now i guess goes for another 3 years, only thing goes out always is thermalcoupler but at least goes for few years, so is NOT that bad

    If you clean off the the tip of the thermocouple at the valve with sand paper lightly , that can extend the life of the thermocouple, also clean the thermocouple off as well. fyi

    I appreciate the video, but please be aware that you must have a blue burner flame(perfect flame) and some orange is okay, but never a yellow flame. yellow flame impinging on metal creates carbon monoxide. always have a professional look at it. I get the $12 fix, but other things to consider, just saying.

    Older manufactured water heaters are more reliable, unlike today's WH made and assembled in Mexico of foreign components, theystart to fail within a year of used, while still in warranty. My old WH lasted 20+ years before it failed due to leaking tank.

      The pilot may have gone out due to smothering burner flame. When an appliance has a smothering flame, it is producing deadly levels of carbon monoxide. Most of the youtube plumbers also forget or don't know how to check to make sure it is venting properly.

    • @calvinmitchell6381
      @calvinmitchell6381 4 года назад

      @@MrTachyon3000 what you say is true, but it looks to me like he left the metal door off the whole time. That would let him know that when the flame went out again it wouldn't be a venting issue.

    • @MrTachyon3000
      @MrTachyon3000 4 года назад +2

      @@calvinmitchell6381 … I think you misunderstood my post. When I said that most youtube plumbers forget or don't know how to check to make sure water heater is venting properly, I meant the vent pipe on top of the tank. You want to make sure that the exhaust is going up and out of the house through the vent pipe and that you can check with the smoke of a match(except on a smothering flame; you don't do that with a smothering flame) around the downdraft diverter with the appliance burner on. If the smoke is pulled in and up, it's venting good. If the smoke is blown back at you, it's not venting properly. Give it up to 10 minutes to burn off cobwebs & stuff. There may be debris inside the vent pipe, mice nesting, birds, separated vent, or even the vent cap flat on the pipe above the roof due to being put together with duct tape and the adhesive going bad over the years. Not venting properly means it's spilling exhaust inside the house and that can mean carbon monoxide, and if the appliance is not burning clean, high levels of deadly carbon monoxide. Any appliance with a vent system, needs to be checked to be sure it's venting the exhaust out properly. Anybody can light a pilot or troubleshoot, and fix, but you have to be sure it's safe to use.
