If you're wondering karl the deranged everyday job is a blacksmith. That's not a joke he is a professional blacksmith
That is both horrifying beyond words and absolutely amazing to know
@@theenderdestruction2362 yes
AHUMH, WAS a blacksmith. Work fulltime for alfabusa now. (if you know a place where I can do blacksmithing though hit me up i want to make a few axes)
@@kokarorloli if you can come to york for the jorvik viking fest I know a few people that do some blacksmithing in the city
@@kokarorloli that’s awesome
Allow me to educate you on these characters.
The Trooper and Pit Drone are kinds of aliens we have only met in Half Life: Opposing Force, a species known only as 'Race X.' The 'Gene Worm' that Pit Drone keeps mentioning is a terraforming creature that acted as the game's final boss.
Gus is a background character in Half Life and it's expansions, working in Black Mesa as a forklift driver. One of very few characters whose models are not reused all over the place.
Dr. Bags was most likely part of the Black Mesa science team and escaped before it was destroyed by a nuclear bomb.
Timothy is a cut enemy from the original Half-Life known as the Kingpin that would have been able to attack with psychic powers. Also, those aren't fingers, just the bottom of a slug-like body.
The four-eyed alien in the intro was one of the Vortigaunts that Dr. Bags mentioned, an enemy in the first games that has since become another citizen of Earth under the rule of the oppressive Combine. The creature on his shoulder was a Headcrab, a usually aggressive and parasitic lifeform, but if you remove their beaks they become much more docile and can even be kept as pets.
the first liquid the dude drank was normal water just spiked with drugs to give amnesia and made more addictive
Ah, that makes more sense.
@@Airier part of how the Combine controls the population, on top of remote copulation control. Also, the reason the Combine Trooper poured the "juice" on the face of his gasmask is because the gasmask *is* his face; although basic Civil Protection are Human conscripts and sellouts, the higheranks are heavily modified both biologically and cybernetically and you can see a crossection of their head in Half-Life 2.
May wanna add that it's the bogged down version there's different types and each one is extremely; let me repeat this EXTREMELY addictive when deprived of water.
Yeah, I remember a vending machine early on in HL2 that concealed a secret door to one of the scientist's bases. The vending machine purported to sell "Breen's Private Reserve," but I just assumed at the time it was just plain tap water being marketed as especially clean water. I assume Bruva added his interpretation that it's basically mind control water.
@@afqwa423 no it's actually Canon been a while since I played but yeah all food and drinks are laced or drenched in the stuff.
You have not played half life… DO A LETSPLAY IMMEDIATELY.
Also on that note, folks might say play Blackmesa instead of HL1 first, but it's better to start with the original, so you can see the visual progression better.
That feeling is kinda lost, when you play HL2, if you do BM first.
@@FloofersFX Especially since Black Mesa only covers Half-Life 1, not the expansions like Opposing Force from which Pit Drones and Shock Troopers are.
@@Horny_Fruit_Flies ay, that's a good point too.
Actually, that's a myth, that mideval humans only drunk alcohol. They know that water was safe to drink if you boiled it, so thats why things like Tea became so popular.
Yep. Ale's just more popular since it's safer and you can flavour it. Water is still essential, but it's just that they're usually dirty that it's hard to tell if it's safe or not, even after boiling.
The problem with boiled water is that it takes a lot of time to boil substantial quantities. Not to mention the fire needed for that.
@@nairpic7360 Which is why, on ships, they would bring strong liquor like Rum aboard, and mix it into the water to make "Grog"
Plus the alcohol they drank to quench thirst was a small ale, meaning very little alcohol content. The purpose wasn't to get drunk but to have something safe to drink because that little bit of alcohol killed the bacteria
If a well is kept clean then it’s water will be perfectly safe to drink, but that does not change the fact that water is a very boring and unsatisfactory drink to have with food.
Also the beer people drank back then was called ‘table beer’, and had a lot less alcohol in it than modern beer. The beer strong enough to get you drunk was never consumed during working hours.
I think the whole Doctor Bags cocking the shotgun is an injoke to Warhams. When Pi-Braine kept cocking his plasma weapon.
Or gus Johnson shotgun video
Alakablama!
This series so far is a treat for Half-Life lore masters, and honestly is barely comprehensible for someone who never played any Half-Life game as it makes some obscure references. Like the two main aliens (the Shock Trooper, the Pit Drone and the Gene Worm it gushed about) are from an expansion (Opposing Force) to the first Half-Life that fans still debate whether it's canon or not, considering Valve ignores what it introduced into the universe. Gus is just a background "character" you can barely see once in the beginning of Half-Life 1, and "Timothy" is a cut alien enemy.
If you want to enjoy the video fully, you ought to play the games.
Dr. Breen's Private Reserve isn't alcohol, it's drugged water available from every vending machine in city 17.
Well that's disappointing. 😔
@@Airier It's the only water available in the cities. The Combine uses it to keep humanity depressed and compliant.
@@Airier Potentially not alcohol*
The people who drink it seem slighty hungover afterwards.
@@1x1boop28’slightly hungover’, ‘drugged and amnesiac’, tomayto, tomahto.
Its Karl. Karl does Karl things.
That is probably the best description anyone can probably think up to describe this. 😅👍
The thing at the start of the game is a Synth Dropship. Think a flying whale carrying a transport pod under it full of soldiers.
While being half cyberborn lobotomized
Incase you haven't realized, the Murder Drones Season 1 trailer dropped recently. It begins!
For some of the animation, in particular the Antlion alien at 1:20, I believe they incorporated a few shots from Source Film Maker to match the animations, because while ZV definitely ups the ante in terms of animation, as a Half Life veteran of many, *many* years, that set of movements was instantly familiar.
19:03 I love how the trooper actually blushes at Human guy's comment.
I do hope they get Ross Scott of "freeman's mind" fame to do someone in the series at some point. Gene worm isn't that tough just shoot it in its glowing weak spots for massive damage. Gus is an NPC you only see once in the intro sequence of the first half life. Race X appeared in the opposing force expansion to half life which is optionally canonical by default (tho most ppl consider em as such), they basically hitch a ride on the same portal tear that allowed race X into our reality to launch their invasion but they have some interesting side effects like how their invasions is focused out of a physical portal whose presence (or that of race X ) is also spreading some sort of organic matter around the facility and especially in areas they hold. Their invasion was stopped by a USMC marine named Adrian Shepard(and fan favorite protagonist) when he killed the gene worm as it was coming trough into our reality (or atleast he forced it back)
that vid is giving me Warhams nostalgia (Trooper=Pi'Brain, same voice actor, & the Doctor=Reeb van Horn, also same voice actor)
HumanGuy (Gus) is the same VA as Captain Zedek. However I do feel HulkyCrow is the better at masking his actual voice compared to the others.
Like the doctor feels like old Reeb and Trooper just gives me Pi From Another Mother ideas.
There’s two kinds of actors.
The ones who play any role and the ones who make any role theirs.
SpeakerD and Earndil appear to be the latter, their voice and often the mannerisms of the characters they play tend to have a set of fairly similar archetypes.
HulkyKrow appears to be the former, playing off several different, albeit nowhere near as outlandish, characters with little tells.
I recommend the Freeman's Mind series. It's basically a Let's Play of Half-Life 1 and 2 but the creator voices the inner thoughts of the character. Or rather the outer thoughts but nobody is listening lol
Honestly something like this could have saved G4
Alongside their basic content they could have gotten some animated series inspired by games like Half-Life
Imagine not knowing what Vortigaunts, Headcrabs, Dr Breen's Private Reserve, Race X, Pit Drones, Shock Troopers, Xen, the Combine, Black Mesa East, mighty Gus the Forklift Driver are. Why even live? 😔
"Slaps you in the mouth'
They did NOT drink booze in the medieval times, in the sense its all they drank. they still drank water and did their best to make sure the water was clean as it can be.
sorry for getting riled but that misconception needs to die in a ditch.
As for the drink he was talking about, its basically given instead of actual water and presumably has mind altering aspects to it, affecting memory. This might have been an alcoholic version, but they appear everywhere in cities.
oh actually minor historical correction, ancient societies did drink water. I think a doctor from the medieval times wrote "Water for vitality, Beer for constitution". basically water to live, beer for energy.... or something like
First off; play Half-Life (or Black Mesa, if you want, it’s the same story, just with a massive overhaul to graphics and some gameplay), Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life 2 and its episodes, and Half-Life: Alyx if you have VR; if not for the context for the setting, then at least because they are really good games and cornerstones of the FPS genre.
Secondly, some context:
- Gus is based on a seldom-used forklift operator model from the first game
- Race X are a separate group of aliens from the usual Half-Life lineup (the usual ones are typically referred to as “Xenians”, referring to their “home” dimension, “Xen”) that only appear in HL: Opposing Force, an expansion of dubious canonicity as it was made by Gearbox studios, not Valve (what the scientist meant by them only appearing in a “smidgen of reports”). Trooper is a Shock Trooper - a relatively common enemy unit that usually use an organism called a “shock roach” as a living lightning gun - and Pit Drone is a Pit Drone - a small, hyperactive enemy that run around a lot. Race X serve a massive otherworldly organism called a “Gene Worm” that apparently planned to consume all of Earth’s resources but was beaten back/killed in Opposing Force.
- “Barnacles” are those things that you realized weren’t palm trees in the opening. They’re part of the usual “Xenian” aliens found throughout Half Life. They’re completely immobile, rooting themselves to ceilings and dangling their long tongues down until prey comes along that they can stick to and drag up to the mouth for consumption.
- The Four-Eyed alien in the opening was a Vortigaunt, they’re one of the most iconic aliens in the series. Enemies in the first game and allies in the second. They’re also another “Xenian” species as opposed to Race X.
- In HL2, Earth has been taken over by a multidimensional empire called “The Combine”. In addition to enslaving humanity in an oppressive dictatorship and using a “suppression field” to prevent us from reproducing, they are apparently draining the Earth’s oceans through unknown means, as the water level in many areas in the game, especially coasts, is drastically reduced.
- “Dr Breen’s Private Reserve” is water provided by the Combine to the citizens in its cities, but is almost definitely laced with some sort of mind-altering agent. As one disgruntled citizen puts it, “Don’t drink the water, they put something in it to make you forget.”
- The Civil Protection officer that drank the cyanide was trying to say that it tasted like almonds (which cyanide is often attributed to having the taste/odor of, in addition to being found in them - in trace amounts) before he promptly ragdolled on death as bodies in the Source engine are prone to doing.
- The scientist/doctor was pumping Gus full of Health Station juice (in addition to what I assume was a syringe full of epinephrine/adrenaline for the allergic reaction).
- “Timothy” is based on a cut alien from HL1
So, when are you going to upload part 2 of Max0r's?
*_You haven't forgotten, have you?_*
Apparently Cyanide does smell/taste like almonds.
That is because almonds contain trace amounts of cyanide that do not constitute a lethal dose.
Gus is seen in 3 (I think) half-life games/mods/sub-games as a fork lift operator in the beginning scenes of the games usually. (only once in each of the games)
During his first and second appearance there are 2 Gus-es operating 2 forklifts.
During his third appearance, he's alone though
Though his character and forklift were fully functional and rigged, neither was used outside his appearances.
Note: He only appears briefly while the player's riding a tram across a great distance.
Black Mesa North-by-Northwest is a reference to Half Life 2, where Eli, a surviving Black Mesa scientist, ran a secret lab/resistance cell that he called Black Mesa East. So the joke is that Dr. Bags, also a Black Mesa scientist involved in the resistance, had pretty much the same idea.
Nice reaction! A few things:
1. At 7:15 Doctor Breen's Private Reserve is water laced with drugs that suppress mental synapses, stop the formation of long term memories, and gradually destroy held memories. The purpose of it is to keep citizens in a miasmic daze where they're extremely vulnerable and compliant.
2. People have already mentioned it, but Trooper and Pit Drone are from the HL1 expansion Opposing Force. They're both apart of a not very well known faction called Race X.
3. At 10:35 The combine are draining all of Earth's naturally occurring bodies of water, including the oceans, in order to terraform Earth into a climate more suitable for them.
4. At 14:20 The combine have been using pre-existing canals as radioactive toxic waste run-offs.
5. At 16:06 It's Alfabusa and the gang making fun of Half-Life 2's exaggerated rag dolls.
Overall, this was pretty good! Usually react channels are just someone watching the video and not reacting to it, but this was the real deal! The only other reaction channels I have found that actually react to stuff have been CombatVeteranReacts and Asmondgold.
Think that frequent pumping the shotgun frequently might be a lorn reference when he frequently cocked his staff
If you want to know more about Half-Life I suggest watching Freeman's mind it's very funny it takes the main character who is usually silent and gives him a voice good laughs
ill explain the stormtropper looking guys in case no one else did they're conbine soldiers there are variants of them from police officers to spec ops types and they depending on wich type of conbine soldier it is they'll have a heavier voice effect due to augmentation for their role for reference listen to the iconic "pick up the can" line then listen to a heavy gunner voice line from half life alyx
The ones in this video actually aren't soldiers, they're civil protection. They aren't augmented at all like the soldiers are, they're just regular humans that have sided with the Combine for better perks like good food and the ability to see your family. By comparison, the soldiers are essentially just mindless drones the Combine have mutated beyond recognition underneath their armor.
In the words of HLVR "There are no medical doctors in Black Mesa Dr. Freeman" - Tommy. Of corse there would have been with the alien dissections and such.
There's also a joke in there somewhere about surgeons not counting as doctors. But I ain't stepping in that one.
😁
@@Airier Also welders do dumb stuff but you can do that with a MIG welder as only the feed metal gets hot from AC power on contact. I would still have welding gear over my arm for sparks but that is a common way to steady a weld.
Black Mesa North by Northwest seems to be a parody of Black Mesa East, which is a location in HL2.

Alright so long story short half life in a nut shell (i am missing some specifics or might get somethings wrong but heres the general) -
Half life 1:
Scientists were experimenting with dimensional travel into the demension known as Xen, at the scientific facility known as Black Mesa. Many scientists sucessfully managed to goto/make return trips from Xen to our world. However every "tampering" of the demensional travel has a small chance of causing a "residence cascade" which will cause many different portals to appear in both demensions. The some of races of Xen include: Headcrabs, Bullsquids, Vortigaunts, Houndeyes.
However for some reason a completely separate portal also appeared including those aliens from Race X. Race X includes: the alien "trooper", the pit drone, shock drones (my personal favorite "weapon" in the game), the geneworm.
Anyway a test being done by scientist Gordon Freeman caused a residence cascade to finally happen, which caused a special detachment of HECU marines sent by the government, to kill anyone and anything involved with the project. However after they failed to get a hold of the situation. Humanity realized that portals were opening all across their demension. Eventually this would result in an introduction of alien species and an all powerful and unknown alien overlord (underthe affilation known only as "the combine") would take earth and humanity as a vassal. Originally the combine saw no used in humanity and wanted to wipe them out after the 7 hour war, but somehow a man named Dr. Breen managed a deal with the combine to "prove humanity" could serve the combine. Thus began humanities "ascension" being created as a "grunt" soldier for the combine. People would be put in adverse living conditions until they joined the military or are conscripted into it. As soon as they rank up as a "civil protection" officer they can get promoted into a combine soldier which completely wipes your memories and you simply become a brain that only knows warfare. Half life 2 takes place during the transitionary period of humanity and you play as gordan freeman from half life 1 who made a deal he couldnt refuse with a strange man in a suit which immediately teleported him from half life 1 into the setting of half life 2
Oh yeah and Race X didnt appear again after HECU Marine Corporal Adrian Shepard managed to kill the invading geneworm, singlehandedly. He would also make a deal with the strange man in a suit that would teleport him right before they blew up black mesa into a "little pocket demension" persumeably "just in case" Gordon Freeman didnt work out. Thats why Race X is consoladated entirely in the Half Life 1 Opposing force DLC; in which instead of playing as gordan freeman (a blackmesa scientist that has to fight the invading aliens and the government sent HECU marines to escape alive) you instead play the same event from the perspective of a HECU Marine (in addition to joining in the crossfire between the Race X and Xen aliens, you also visit familiar places from the original game, even in one case, you literally get to see your protagonist from the previous game through as he jumps into a portal)
If you want to get a feel of the setting of half life two, i recommend watching the amazingly well animated videos from TheParryGod. You may want to activate youtubes subtitles on his videos as combine troopers can be hard to understand
Hey dudebro, Murder Drones season 1 trailer is out, and the first (or second, if you consider the pilot) will be out around November 14th or so
they werent commiting suicide. the combine around her shot her freind then her.
You: I haven't played half-life
Me: you and me both
Just a point about alcohol, the thing about people only drinking alcohol back in the day is mostly a myth as I understand it. Alcohol takes time and effort to produce, not to mention dehydrates you further. Safe-ish (by the standards of the time) drinking water was absolutely available, you just had to be selective with your sources. A well, spring or aqueduct with a reputation for being clean and having a good flavor was obviously a much better choice than the sewage-saturated river Thames, for example.
That could be deceiving of course. London had a cholera outbreak in 1854, and it was eventually determined that a good chunk of the victims were all drinking from the same water pump, which had a stellar reputation. Further investigation determined that it had been installed a little too close to an old cesspit.
And that's why we're so careful about drinking water and wastewater treatment nowadays.
IV Bag on... Dr Bags is likely a reference to Gordon Freeman, who through the course of Half-Life games was wearing HEV suit that not only protects from Hazardous Environments, but is also capable of diagnosing out loud injuries and was jabbing Gordon with morphine shots roughly every 30 minutes.
If I recall soda no longer exist in half life 2 like all production stopped, and what ever one's in vending machines and and warehouses is was worth more then anything.
Hey just so you know if you haven’t heard already Murder Drones Season 1 Trailer came out yesterday. If you can react to the trailer it would be great also love your reactions!
Play black mesa if you want a more modern experience.
If you still have not played _Half-Life_ and do not plan to for some time, I recommend watching _Freeman’s Mind_ by Ross Scott.
Using welding pistol like that is actually a thing(Good stability when you need it). Also that was good editing with fire, сarbon dioxideand argon 8 to 2 do not produce that type of fire(welder type he uses use it as shield gas. While spool provide additional metal wire as solder, its going from welder to pistol via tube with gas in second canal).
HumanGuy is a good sport
