Oh boy, your reaction to Sam Haight the “Ultimate Badass” was great. Old Sam’s a weird thing to try and explain to people who don’t know World of Darkness, he actually started out as a legit and serious antagonist before at some point they decided to have him jump between multiple different game lines and steal powers from each of them as a running joke. First he was kinda just a guy, albeit a really in-shape guy who was an expert hunter, he was also related to a werewolf but wasn’t one himself. Then he killed some vampires and drank their blood becoming a ghoul, then he discovered a magic ritual to turn himself into a werewolf and spent years gathering the ingredients before successfully enacting it. Later on through he used a special artifact to kill a mage and steal some of his power, then went around killing more mages and absorbing even more magical power. Eventually Sam discovered the location of an ancient and powerful vampire and entered its tomb wanting to drink its blood and get even stronger. The vampire woke up and Sam was either killed by it, died when the tomb collapsed, or possibly killed by player characters during that whole mess. The epilogue to this is Sam becoming a ghost that gets immediately ganked by more powerful Wraiths and he gets Soulforged, literally hammered and compressed into metal that the dead use to build things. He ends up as an ashtray sitting on the desk of a ghost middle manager. Yeah, this game’s pretty wild huh?

9:37 The Hebrew Bible for Beginners joke is taking shots at WoD for dabbling in occult themes and lore in a silly and self-serious gothy way. For example, the entire Vampire mythology is about how Cain was cursed to super-mega-Chad-vampirism for the murder of Able, with his grandchildren being called _Antediluvians._ In Hunter the parenting, Marcus makes fun of the idea of Kue-jin being a poor quilt-work parody of a bunch of different Asian cultures and dismisses it as ridiculous and implausible. 31:22 No, that's 90's dark age of comics right there. Edit: One of the main ways I heard about WOD was from some semi-retired goths online. Of particular note is how they'd ghoul animals. Invisible ghouled rats with web cams for surveillance, ghouled bears for bruiser combatants, and ghouled racoons with lighters and pipe bombs.
I used to play Exalted which was originally launched as a prequel setting to WoD before becoming it's own thing entirely. I have fond memories of adventuring in the Wild as a Lunar Exalt and encountering a man who had a pet Cthulhu. Good times... Also I just love the concept of stunt dice being awarded to your attack roll based on how bat-sh*t overkill and anime extra your description of what your character's action is. Exalted and WoD both operate off of the Rule of Cool at their core as originally envisioned by White Wolf...which is exactly why both settings lend themselves so well to absurdity. It is also why one of my favorite fanfiction stories to read when I'm down is a Mass Effect/ WoD crossover entitled 'Pencils Down, Death-rays Up'. I did not know I needed to read about a universe in which mages had converted the Great Red Spot of Jupiter, and the entire planet itself by extension, into a Reaper gutting death ray until that suddenly became a thing in one chapter...
UK here, never had a methlab on my street but did have two brothals several drug dens and an arms dealer on my street. We also had several murders, five over a six year period, but generally speaking most of these places either blended in or actively went out to be nicer than their surroundings. The arms dealer liked to put up a Bazzar on his driveway every year, like a tent pavillion frame with decorative carpet walls and roof. The brothals always did their best to blend in, the only ones that gave close to a meth lab vibe were the drug dens after we realised they'd stripped out the staircases for the timber to sell. It's a rough area to be fair.
