Social etiquette 101: If you are afraid your friendly banter crossed the line for someone, it is okay to pull them aside when you get the opportunity and bring up that you are worried that you did. This will result in a number of responses but if this person is your friend they will most likely be happy that you did come to check on them because it shows that you care. They will say that they weren't hurt by it because they weren't or they'll honestly tell you that they were and appreciate that you came forward to set the record straight. Another posibility is that they will say it didn't but it did. Roll an Insight Check for this one IRL because that's not a good sign. It means that they are afraid of hurting your feelings in return. In that latter case you may find that you may need to get to know them a little better.
Another good tip I live by is: I establish very early on with people I'm getting to know that my humor can tend to sprint towards, and often, Olympic Long Jump over that line like a gold medalist by some people's standards. So if I am even approaching that line with that person, LET ME KNOW. I won't be mad, I'll be thankful and I'll immediately dial it back because I want people to be comfy around me. This does not solve ALL problems, but offering that up makes it known that I am not unwilling to stop making certain jokes if it makes people uncomfortable or insulted. I do this because in my family, you lived and died by your wit, and if you got a quip thrown at you, you had to be able to take it on the chin and throw one just as good or better. This is not the upbringing of most people, and even I myself was the subject of a lot of bullying, so I made that personal rule for myself as a preventative measure.
@@wessltov I COULD write a more humorous response to this, but I'll choose to take this seriously. If you feel like there is a good chance of this happening, asking someone around you to be present for your verbal confrontation is never a bad idea, both as a way to have an impartial mediator (which I've been for friends in the past,) and as someone to break up or deter any physical altercation.
It sounds a lot like Puffin, but I wasn't searching if it was him or not. after all, Jocat has surprised me with his versatility already, so it wouldn't be surprised if he could pull off that invitation on his own.

The clip you were wondering about is Live Action Role Playing. The people lying down were “killed” and that clip is from the Lightning Bolt clip which is usually used to diss LARPers for how ridiculous it sounds. I mean, I spent years Larping, and while it was super fun it was also pretty silly when viewed from the outside
@@tennagon3822 It was great! It's like functional cosplay, swordfighting, and roleplaying all rolled up into one neat ball. Some of my favorite roleplaying moments came out of Larping, and there are a couple that have easy entry (like Amtgard), although those tend to be heavy on the fighty bits and lighter on the roleplay. The main barrier to entry is the cost; weapons, garb, and entry fees tend to add up, especially for the more elaborate larps.
@@Dramoklos Yes, and are limited in other aspects (like not as many spells known nor as big of a spell list), depending on the game, a wizard with meta magic adept would be just fine, but yea a sorcerer could also take meta magic adept and do a ton of shenanigans each day. Guess it boils down to how often you would be using meta magic.
you can totally do a two person game of just a Dm and a single Player, did it for the longest time with a friend of mine. We were actually able to obtain the mystical, consistently weekly games.
Here's the funny thing about that, I'm completely blanking on all of that clip. I know I've watched it, but I can literally not remember it. It's really weird.
28:33 Fun story about that! In our party, we have a druid who is *terrified* of blood, irl and in game, and gets nauseous after every fight in character. Being the naive and helpful warlock that I am, who hadn't even realize that I've signed a contract with the Ancient Ones for my magic, I now cast Prestidigitation with my Eldritch Blast to fill the room with the scent of something lovely, like roses or blueberries or caramel, so we don't smell blood at all. Thing is... She's scared of seeing blood so my extra magic does jackshit lmao. My character is an airhead like that, and I love playing an idiot.
I'm in a party that is mostly glass cannons. Me - who plays ranger - and the paladin are the only ones with the ability to soak more than 3 hits. Rest of the party? Druid, Wizard, Sorcerer, and Monk. Though the druid does tend to spend more time in wild shape than out... And has resulted in our party being treated to both a crocodile and giant spider trying to communicate in mime. Not at the same time, of course. Regardless, we have more squishies than we do meat shields to protect them. Amazingly, we have not suffered a TPK yet because the dice gods have been surprisingly merciful so far. I'm still planning back up characters for this campaign, though. I don't trust the dice to remain merciful...

So I browsed the PH and decided Ranger looked like the most likely to help a party of squishy mages survive the Underdark. Little thing I did to flavor my Warlock. His patron is a celestial fox so when he uses Eldritch Blast, he summons radiant foxes that charge right into the target. The Warlock is very fun to customize and flavor up.
I think the best troll I ever did was write the simplest backstory for a paladin that had nothing dark or tragic in it, but the other players were convinced I was hiding something. Every opportunity, they'd try and go detective mode into what my paladin was hiding.
BTW the person JoCat was talking to was Zee Bashew. He has his own D&D channel. It mostly focuses on magic spells in a series called the animated spellbook. They are short like JoCat's videos and would be a great thing to react to after you finish the Crap Guide. He even has a storyline related to the aftermath of the wizard video.
Had lots of 1 on 1 D&D sessions. My favorites were: 1 - Player travelled out of town for 2 months; when she came back, we had a few sessions to roleplay what her character did with her life. In universe, she had left the party for three weeks while she travelled back to her country to continue her druid training. 2 - Character spent a week dead in-game. When they finally managed to ressurect him, I ended the session. Between then and the next session, I met the player so we could roleplay what her character's life after death was; considering the character had sold his soul to a Devil, it was a lot of fun (for me). The character came back traumatized enough that finding a way to break away from his pact became his #1 priority then. 3 - Weird creepy pillar, makes things that touch it disappear. 1 player decides to touch it. The others weren't as adventurous. So we had a 1 on 1 session for his lonely adventures in the Astral Sea. I have also gotten used to having 1 on 1 sessions to just flash out backstory. They aren't always 1 on 1 since nowadays most times my party links their BS together, "we are brothers", "we met on the road to this city", "we studied together in the same order" stuff like that; it usually is a small adventure dealing with some menial problem where they can get a few hints about the plot of the campaign and start getting used to their characters in an environment where they have full attention, instead of panicking into character traits in the middle of the whole group later.
A glass canon is an game archetype for characters that kill quicky but get killed just as quickly sacrificing vitality in exchange for damage, examples from smash bros are:jigglypuff, little mac, pichu,dr.mario and falco
In street fighter chun-li and akuma can also be considered glass canons because chun-li has a lower health bad then avarage in exchange for good kill power and akuma is a (overly simplified description) glass canon version of ryu also in beyblade xeno xcalibur and most atack type beyblades are also glass canons sacrificing stamina (the ability to spin for a long time) in exchange for massive attack power but the xcalibur line is the most extreeme example and also mario because he kill goombas with just one hit but get killed with 1,2 or 3 hits (depending with you are normal, with murshroom or most other power-ups)
Say the line, Bart is from an old episode of the Simpsons. Bart gets fifteen minutes of fame on the Krusty the Clown show when he destroys a set on live TV, and says, "I didn't do it!"
I play a Tabaxi soulknife Rogue in one of my campaigns. Cunning action pairs super well with feline agility. For context Tabaxi have the race feature "feline agility" that doubles their movement speed. They have a movement speed of 30, feline agility doubles that. So you as a rogue if needing to just get the hell out of dodge or get to someone real quick can go from running 90 feet in a single movement to 180ft. Now imagine someone casting haste on you and getting the mobility feat. What's great about feline agility too is that you just need to do an action without movement to get it back. Which basically as a rogue you want to be sneaky and if your a rogue that uses ranged weapons (I as a soulknife use either my handy dandy never ending psychic energy knives or my longbow that I had enough downtime to learn) this is doubly useful cause you want to hit from a distance in a way that you will always get sneak attack and then on your next turn get feline agility again. So its run, shoot, run, shoot. It is very fun and also the reason I was one of the few people to survive the black dragon that they decided to antagonize.
Please react to the V-Tuber D&D Highlights series over on Best of Ironmouse's channel. They follow the misadventures of a group of English speaking V-tubers that were all novices to D&D, but wanted to get into the game. So they roped in a veteran to be their DM and guide to the game. It's a very crazy, but fun set of videos. Most of the videos are on average around 10 minutes. The only lengthy episode being 21 minutes and 15 seconds long, but thats not till episode 12. So by then you shouldn't mind reacting to a longer episode. Now granted you don't get the full context of the campaign or events, but its the choices of the players that will give you gold to react to. Believe me. Episode 1 is character creation and even that gets ridiculous.
Thanks for this reaction video! You bring a delightful geek energy to it that I appreciate. One note... I used to play 2-person D&D with my brother very often, to pass the time while doing chores. We had no dice or paper (had to keep the hands free, yo) and success & failure were determined by how over-the-top the player made his description of what he wanted to do. Great fun all 'round.
5:05 Yes, it's called a duet game. Whole lot of reasons to do them, one being to run a whole solo game for someone, another as a supplement to regular group sessions to keep momentum going when someone splits from the party to do something.
See this is why I subbed and rung the bell so.i can get a front row seat to humor Edit: oh I heard you mention space marines but it's all about da orky boyz always moar dokka
I'm sure someone has answered these but: 1. Larp, Live action RP, is the nerdiest sword fight you'll ever see. 2. A gas cannon is a cannon that uses explosive gass instead of gunpowder, Carbide Cannons are still used as an alternative to fireworks sometimes. 3. One Person D&D exists, just need a d20 and roll it as often as possible. 4. Seeing as how the OG Wizard only had a d4 worth of HP and a single first level spell to their name and at level 20 could alter reality permanently, I'm fairly sure they were always supposed to be the zero to hero class.
DM and 1 Player? Totally possible. I have done so. It. Was. GLORIOUS. Also, look into the Essentials Kit. Basically a box that says:"Want to D&D with a smaller group that standard? Here."
The "Mascot" he uses is called a wiggler, they're from the Monster Hunter games, which he has crap guides for all those classes. Also in the game you can make a wiggler hat, which is what he most of the time has. Also you can catch a wiggler to keep as your pet, and when you see it in your home they're in a pot! Fun facts, whether you want them or not!
I managed to work out magical outfits for our entire party that were self cleaning, colour changing for simple camo and suitable for all weather, by in character getting into an argument/discussion with a mage guild leader about the uses of prestidigitation in the field, while out of character the DM and I were pulling up sources trying to find the limits of the spell and item design. Another party member was out to inspire societal revolutions and to pull away the illusions of the upper class and how even a basic understanding of magic can make the societal divide a fallacy. She used prestidigitation for formal high tea. Since the changes to flavour and temperature last an hour, more than enough time to eat. I even used it to take quick notes when spying (to be traced with ink later) and even question people and shop using the 'small image' trick to show off who we were after and the outfits we wanted XD
hey airier, as a barbarian main, I'm gonna share a broken barbarian build that will blow your mind a bit. goliath race with totem warrior subclass. totem warrior gives you choices between a bunch of spirit animals with nice little effects and choosing bear at lv3 makes you take half damage from all damage types except psychic while raging. goliaths get a race-specific feat that buffs their stone endurance feature to use their reaction to gain resistance to one damage type until their next turn. that alone can quarter damage (at least in the rules we're playing by). the danger sense ability gives advantage on dex saves against spells and traps you see - couple that with the resiliency (dex) feat and you get proficiency in dex saves. combine those, on a successful save, you can effectively take 1/8 damage from fireball. fireball's max damage at 3rd level slot is 48, meaning you can effectively cut that to 6. a barbarian's an amazing tank. another player in our campaign plays a paladin with full plate and even though his armour's much higher than mine (23 v 15), his hp wears down much faster than me, telling me that damage resistance means more than pure AC because many enemies we encounter either get huge bonuses to hit or use spells, many of which don't have attack rolls and hit regardless. And even though barbarians don't get the dpm like fighters with their action surge and many extra attacks or paladins with their smite on crits = double smite dice, barbarians have something more important: high strength means high attack rolls. barbarians are accurate with hits. I'm only at lv10, but I have a +3 weapon, which, combined with strength and proficiency is a +11 to hit. I can almost reliably hit anything
19:19 Your OCs may be evil, but mine are adorable. Mine are adorable beans. Just because yours are evil and shouldn't be brought to life doesn't mean ours shouldn't.
you absolutely can do a 1 player, 1 DM session, and they are AWESOME. A lot of DMs don’t do it because it’s unfamiliar and has a very different “vibe” to normal sessions, but it can be a great way to start a campaign if you want to “play the backstory” or otherwise add a more personal “episode” to a larger campaign, and yes, you can do an entire campaign that way, it’s just a very taxing experience for both the player (since it’s ALWAYS his/her turn) and DM (since they are ALWAYS thinking about how what their making interacts with your character specifically) so most who do play/run it generally prefer it in small doses, like a one-shot adventure or side-story in a larger campaign. I think Matt Coleville of MCDM productions has a video on exactly that topic. You can also play most TTRPGs without a DM if you are playing with a good set of random encounter tables or pre-prepared modules and are good at compartmentalizing so you don’t let your character cheat just because no one’s enforcing the rules. Some older systems like Traveller even had mechanics and rules in the core books designed to help with that. But it’s a completely different experience from a GMed game, since the GM role is being split between the player and the adventure module or random encounter table essentially acting as a video game CPU...which is also why non-DMed games have basically gone extinct: videogames mostly do it better.
The best job I ever had was because my supervisor was the best DM I have ever played with. We were part of the IT department, and when things got slow, he would just turn to me and say. "What do you do?" and I knew it was time to play.
4:08 Yes… YES… YES! That’s what my Ranger-Rogue did! Hid his backstory details until it was relevant! And the payoff for when I revealed both secrets of my backstory was *phenomenal!* The part 1 of that story just went live on All Thing DnD today. Part 2, if they release it, will hopefully reveal the other secret I alluded to multiple times. The thing that I dropped so many hints for over 12 sessions, I had each player roll History and I had different reveals for each even number from 0 to 24. 12:00 Speaking of All Things DnD, they have a story of a buff Wizard.
Yes, the original wizard (like old old Old text) actually described the class (technically it was called caster back then) as a class with a drastically tough time growing, but with near limitless potential if they survive, and they grew their power (and xp cost damn it) on an exponential curve, but had the highest max level as well, oh, and back then spells cost XP as well as components. Meanwhile the fighter class of the day was a linear growth that was fairly stable from start to finish and had inter-personal skills to recruit followers, elves were a caster-fighter hybrid class (yup, class, not race) with a low cap on it, and thief was basically how you did anything from open doors to figure out what you got as loot until the wizard actually got to a decent level with a stockpile of xp and gold. Thief was always a “you are better at what you do but suck if its a direct confrontation” type back then, and usually leveled faster than everyone else by cooking the party’s books and pocketing loot to bring more gold and thus xp back than everyone else
30:40 Warlock are also natural ritual casters, means that while your party is sleeping you can spend ten minutes to detect magic, purify supplies, and id item whenever you want. Unfortunately, you only have a limited amount of spell slots and can only switch spells when you level up. This is an advanced class for DnD vets and not a beginner class. Of course, the real fun is the RPG. Dungeon masters could use your class as an excuse to explore the other realms.
In re two-person D&D ... my brother and I used to do this all the time. To make it even better, we didn't have books, paper or dice! Success would be based on the DM's rating of the coolness of the player's description of what he was trying to do. It got a little wonky betimes, but it was hella fun and a great way to keep interested while doing chores.
Sorcerers' can do a lot with the spells they have available a wizard could potentially know every spell they could possibly cast, but they have to prepare it making them unrivaled in utility, but I'd describe it as you have a different swiss army knife in every pair of pants and if you bring the wrong one to work that day you're out of luck
Matthew Mercer actually has a couple of videos out there of him doing a 1 on 1 dnd session with various celebrities, it actually sounds like a fun concept.
Gary Gygax hated the idea of Wizards as player characters and argued with David Arnison and Ed Greenwood for hours just to let Magic Missel have a guaranteed hit.
At least when it comes to magic missile, I could see an argument against it. Especially at early levels, a guaranteed hit is pretty powerful. But as for not wanting player character wizards, I'm so inundated on magic as the mainstay of the franchise, it's hard to wrap my mind around that. 😯
Ah, Fireball. I`ll never forget the first time I used it. Was in Krynn, doing The War, so a shit-ton of npcs and my party were walking along in single file, when a group of hobgoblins led by a giant(Hill, Stone, can`t remember) jumped out ahead of us. So my Fighter/MU Morgone the Doomed(he always failed saving throws and got rekt over and over) halfelf(who married Laurana) and Gilthanas step out of line, one on each side, and we both cast Fireball. All dead. We were like "Holy shit! That`s awesome!" Boy, did the fireballs start flying, after that.
For me, I learned DnD through a 2 person campaign, where a friend of mine was a DM and he made up a mini campaign for just me, but he did eventually add 3 NPC PCs in the second session that basically only existed for combat or puzzles.
Starbucks sponsorship update: I was just watching the Evangelion Abridged reaction video from Sep 21, 2017 and got a Starbucks App ad at the beginning. So there, Airier, you finally got ad money from Starbucks! Congrats!
Your question about 1 person DnD with an A.I. as the Dungeon Master is pretty much the concept of Hand of Fate (1 and 2). I mean the main NPC is the Dealer who refines the Game of Life and Death you playband he shuffles encounter, equipment, and blessing and curse cards, and gives you dice and wheel gambits, and a pendulum, and a card shell game. It's a whole thing.
1 player D&D is called writing a book... 2 player D&D I actually did successfully with a friend who moved away. It went pretty well with a few NPC's for backup... It was like a text based adventure for him, with lots of images :)
Know this is late but they sent the Cleric because Clerics have high wisdom, so tend to one of the better classes for scouting out places, that said Polymorph doesn’t maintain character stats for the target.
You and Dm sessions are typically one shots from what I heard, great for helping a newbie or friend just getting in, learn ropes, got a few set up for myself once the people dming are free(very busy and wanted folk)
Some things about low PC games. While there is the general joke that playing DnD solo is just being an Author. There is some interesting methods of doing so. Most come into line of a PickaPath style of game play where instead of having d20s and stuff, you generally move it into a smaller dicepool of uses. For example, deciding how helpful X character is going to be towards your goal you flip a coin or roll a d4. 1 they are a compleate arse or know compleatly nothing to do with it or 4 they know everything and can help more so than originally planned.
Yep, a 2 player game does happen. I've run one before and it was okay. Definitely more people are better but one on one with a creative player can be interesting. Yes you can do dnd with just yourself, that is known as writing a book. And an ai dungeon master is called playing a video game. Thank you for coming to me TED talk
To the 1 one 1 session with the DM question: Yes! You can! There was this one time in our (admittedly very small) campaign that one member had a Thing and can't join and turns out the other member can't join last minute so it ended up just being a solo main session with just me and the NPCs and it ended up being by FAR the most lighthearted silly session we've done so far and I Love It. (Something worth saying: Our campaign isn't really a traditional DnD campaign, it's digimon themed and also a tad episodic, but we still have stat sheets and use rolls and stuff)

I’ve honestly never seen a rogue played like Joe cat talks about here. Every rogue that’s ever been at my table for the past decade has either been a friendly, consummate professional, or a drunken, fun loving murderer with the rest of the boys.
My rogue definitely fits the edgy and mysterious backstory cliche. Javen Vardis lived in the city of Canthain in an orphanage until he was six. The orphanage was burned down by corrupt guards because the owner couldn’t afford to pay protection money. He spent the next year living on streets and stealing to survive. He befriended Ildan Zolond, another half-elf his age who was in a similar situation. The two of them started working together. They were eventually caught by a retired rogue named Halbar Sidrov who they tried to rob when they were eleven. Halbar decided to be a mentor to them, teaching them how to fight and be better thieves over next two years. He warned the two of them to trust no one. Javen wanted to use their new skills to steal from the nobles who abused their power and the corrupt guards, expose the crimes of said nobles and guards, and protect civilians. Ildan was reluctant to use their skills for helping others, but Javen eventually managed to convince him. They ended up with a large bounty over next year. Javen started trying to learn magic after stealing a tome from a wizard’s house and reading what he could do with it (reason for being an Arcane Trickster). Halbar told them that valuable gems had just been bought by a noble that the two of them often caused problems for. The two of them were caught in a trap when they tried to steal the gems. Halbar sold them out in order to collect the bounty on them. He reminded them he said to trust no one. The noble stabbed him in the back and ordered the guards to catch the two of them, but they managed to escape. Ildan became more violent and was willing to steal from people who they once tried protecting after this. A few months later he suggested to Javen that they start taking jobs from the guards and nobles they fought to get pardoned and make more money. Javen quickly rejected the idea and became angry at Ildan for even thinking something like that. Allies started to be caught by guards or mysteriously disappear over the next year. Javen was ambushed by guards when he went to one of his and Ildan’s hideouts. He escaped them but was ambushed by Ildan. Ildan had secretly been hired by the guards to catch his former allies, and Javen was last on the list. He reminded him that Halbar taught them to trust no one. The two of them fought. Ildan offered Javen one last chance to join him, but Javen refused. Javen barely managed to defeat Ildan, but he couldn’t bring himself to finish him. Ildan told him he was too soft. Javen decided to leave Canthain since he was being hunted and Ildan had likely revealed all of their hideouts. He became paranoid and struggled to trust the few allies that he had left. He took Ildan’s comment about him being too soft to heart and became more willing to do morally gray things to accomplish his goals. He began to wear a mask and call himself Corvus to hide his identity. He tried to keep his age hidden as well so that he would be taken seriously (sixteen at start of campaign), and he always tried to hide his face.

I mean, I spent years Larping, and while it was super fun it was also pretty silly when viewed from the outside
Always looked like fun to me
@@tennagon3822 It was great!

He probably meant "glass cannon", just skipped L by accident. A glass cannon is a character that deals a lot of damage, but is very frail.
Well how about a PC that has more cannon and less glass. Or the other one less cannon and more glass.
@@eclipseballad The former is called OP, and the latter is just glass.

Zee Bashew. He has his own D&D channel. It mostly focuses on magic spells in a series called the animated spellbook. They are short like JoCat's videos and would be a great thing to react to after you finish the Crap Guide.
He even has a storyline related to the aftermath of the wizard video.
3:07 That's PuffinForest, another D&D youtuber... ...and that's his natural voice.
Had lots of 1 on 1 D&D sessions. My favorites were:
1 - Player travelled out of town for 2 months; when she came back, we had a few sessions to roleplay what her character did with her life.
Nice Cameos by Puffin, Sipps and the Animated Spellbook wizard.
Indeed. I'm so glad I've been introduced to all three of these amazing channels and content creators ^-^

It is very fun and also the reason I was one of the few people to survive the black dragon that they decided to antagonize.
... I'm gonna need to tell my party's tabaxi bard about that. 😯
And then there's the full streams, which you could potentially watch on your own time. I did it will exercising.

I'm sure someone has answered these but:
4. Seeing as how the OG Wizard only had a d4 worth of HP and a single first level spell to their name and at level 20 could alter reality permanently,
I'm fairly sure they were always supposed to be the zero to hero class.

For One on One D&D you can look up “Dicing with Death.” Just two friends taking turn being DM. Once one dies the other takes over.
I cracked up so hard at the whole Fry's puppy schtick.
you absolutely can do a 1 player, 1 DM session, and they are AWESOME.
And the payoff for when I revealed both secrets of my backstory was *phenomenal!*
The part 1 of that story just went live on All Thing DnD today. Part 2, if they release it, will hopefully reveal the other secret I alluded to multiple times. The thing that I dropped so many hints for over 12 sessions, I had each player roll History and I had different reveals for each even number from 0 to 24.

One on one dnd is amazing. You can get really in depth and the dm generally has a lot less to worry about
Yes, the original wizard (like old old Old text) actually described the class (technically it was called caster back then) as a class with a drastically tough time growing, but with near limitless potential if they survive, and they grew their power (and xp cost damn it) on an exponential curve, but had the highest max level as well, oh, and back then spells cost XP as well as components.

Loved your reactions to these videos. Happy you take the time to explore things in the video and stop to react at times.

Did you notice the bard and pardon getting married in the warlock video
You and Dm sessions are typically one shots from what I heard, great for helping a newbie or friend just getting in, learn ropes, got a few set up for myself once the people dming are free(very busy and wanted folk)
Not sure if you noticed but in the Warlock video the two characters having a wedding are the Bard and Paladin from the earlier episodes.
Every day we draw closer to the Crap Guide to Races...
But when will ted finally show up to these talks, he cancels more than dnd players.
The Futurama movie showed that Fry's dog lived a normal life.
Also, the mask worn by Jocat's character is from the game Monster Hunter.
27:10 In case you missed it, this was the wedding of the Bard and Paladin.

A gas Cannon is a cannon that uses hyper compressed gas to launch to projectile at subsonic speeds.
