I was just planing to build one with almost the same foundation size, after freezing winter:). My build considers changeable pebbles and sand filter above the burning area, two layers of pebbles, bigger and fine one, and fine sand on top, like a drawer that does not pools out but opens to be easily discharged, with strong metal grill in the bottom to hold almost a foot thick layer. It should be acting like a thermal mass to keep the area warm during the night and to filter soot from smoke. Top compartment would be made out of wood with chimney inside and in the rear, mash cowered controllable openings on bottom and top for a humid air ventilation, and some light roof on top of course:)

Having a portable radio handy in a power outage or some sort of national disaster or emergency will keep you entertained and informed and might even save your life. I was around before the internet and know the value of radio. Many people today don`t and most don`t even have a portable radio and depend 100% on the internet for info. If we have a national emergency and the internet and power go down you`ll be very glad to have one of the following radios. You`ve been warned!
Please share this information. I did a lot of research on this and I highly recommend these radios.
    Sony ICF-P36 Portable AM/FM Radio
This is one of the best bare bones simple analog radios you can buy at the moment. It uses only 2 AA batteries, fits in a shirt pocket, and has very good reception and battery life. Batteries will last over 100 hours in this radio. Analog radios have an advantage over the more common digital radios on the AM band. Almost all digital AM radios have something called “soft mute” that silences distant weak stations. They also usually have muting on tuning so when you tune fast searching for active signals you can`t hear the stations as you pass them by. Also, digital radios use more power than analog radios. For these reasons, this radio is a real gem because it suffers from none of these issues. You`ll have no problem getting all the stations in your area during a power outage. It only costs about 20 bucks on Amazon and is often cheaper on Ebay. But Amazon has fast shipping and a great return policy just in case you get a defective radio which is all too common nowadays since everything is made in China.
TECSUN PL-310ET FM Stereo/SW/MW/LW World Band PLL DSP Radio
This radio has lots of very good features and is known for having great Shortwave and FM reception. AM reception can be hit or miss on these but it`s likely that it will be good too (mine wasn`t though). If not, Amazon has a great return/replacement policy. Even though this is a digital radio battery life seems very good. It`s a great deal for only 48 bucks or so. It doesn`t have SSB to tune in HAM radio but it covers almost all of the shortwave band. It has great search features that quickly store the stations found in either temporary or permanent memory. It has a clock and alarm function and even tells the temperature and uses 3 AA batteries so if you plan to use rechargeables with this get a charger that can charge single batteries so 3 at a time can be charged since many chargers can only charge 2 or 4 at a time. It`s always best to use batteries with AM and Shortwave radios anyway because AC adapters cause static.
Eton Executive Traveler AM/FM/Longwave/Shortwave Radio with Auto Tuning Storage (Amazon)
Ignore the 3 ½ star review on this radio. It`s lumped in with several other radios that got bad reviews. This is an excellent receiver in many ways and it`s on closeout sale for only 35 bucks! This radio is known for great AM radio reception and it`s also very good on Shortwave and FM too. It has no soft mute when listening to weak AM signals and this is rare in digital radios! This radio isn`t perfect...it has a bad hiss when listening with headphones and some odd quirks...but the selling point here is excellent AM radio reception without soft mute...and it`s an absolute STEAL to get a digital AM/FM/Shortwave radio of this quality for this price. Uses 4 AA batteries. If you don`t buy this you`re crazy in my opinion. The new version of this is called the Eton Elite Traveler. It costs 60 bucks. Same radio, just a different color and comes in a leather case. See Amazon reviews to get a better idea of what you`re getting with the other one. You`ll have to press the power button more than once to turn it on (one of the quirks) so don`t return it thinking it`s defective.
    C. Crane CC Skywave SSB AM, FM, Shortwave, NOAA Weather + Alert, Scannable VHF Aviation Band and Single Side Bands Small Battery Operated Portable Travel Radio
This one costs 170 bucks but it does it all and fits in a shirt pocket. I think it uses 2 AA batteries. It can tune in HAM radio operators using the SSB feature on shortwave. This is an American company so it`s more expensive. You can get somewhat similar radios for around 100-120 but they don`t have the weather band. Check out the Chinese Tecsun PL 660 if you want to go cheaper. It`s a very good radio and is larger with a much better sound but it doesn`t have weather band. They have a much cheaper Skywave version of this C. Crane radio on Amazon without SSB that still has the other bands including weather channels. These come with an external antenna and $20.00 earbuds.
For those who don`t know, AM radio signals travel very far at night (hundreds of miles) allowing you to get news and info from other states and distant cities. Shortwave radio signals can be heard internationally. This is why these bands are so useful. Also, in a national emergency HAM radio operators will help transmit important information and are a part of the emergency network.
NOTE: It`s best to use rechargeable batteries with these and keep a big package of regular alkalines to use for backup an extended power outages. If you hear bad static when trying to listen to AM or shortwave in your home various things could cause it from dimmer switches to certain lights and even some satellite receiver boxes. If you plan to use radios for power outages or camping this won`t be a problem of course.
All these radios except the first have a learning curve. Don`t get frustrated. Study the user manual carefully step by step and learn the features. Learn as much as you can about radio reception and antenna options. Shortwave reception can be improved by attaching a length of wire to the whip antenna and it varies depending on the sunspot cycle and time of day. We`re currently at a low point in the sunspot cycle so reception will get better and better in the next few years. Wire reel SW antennas with a clip that attaches to the whip antenna can be bought on Amazon. So can loop antennas for boosting weak AM stations. See todderbert RUclips channel to see these radios reviewed and search the web for radiojayallen and SWLing to learn more.

I just finished rebuilding my smokehouse. Looks like you are setting a great foundation. Can't wait to see how yours comes out. I went with Hardie planks since I burned my last one down. Where I come from originally, a lot if people run the fire inside. Well, you have to exercise a bit more caution doing that but it allows s to cook a little in it. I can also add an outside fire box it I decided to. Can't wait to see you finish. Not a whole lot of good smokehouse videos out there.

If you have a pool of water coming off your concrete, you've got issues. The portland cement will absorb what it needs and any excess separates the bond of the aggregate from the paste and that's where your strength and durability come from. This concrete was either not mixed thoroughly, or it was flooded for workability. A small slab like this shouldn't be cheated on as it's the same workload as it would be with a lower slump.

Driving the rebar into the ground was a mistake. Over time, any metal that is not within the concrete will draw moisture and rust, eventually destroying that metal and weakening the structure. Thatz why many bridges fail when the concrete cracks. That is why anchor bolts were invented.

laying first course of directly on the slab also not really the right way to do it either but... end of the day its a lil smokehouse and even if the slab cracks and shifts it will likely still function for many years in its intended capacity.
