Vacuum sealed bag for the salmon. Glass jars for the herbs and dried mushrooms. Did you guys plant any garlic this fall? Also aging Garlic to make your own Black Garlic is awesome and once it's aged it stores exceptionally well.
When I was pregnant I was told I couldn’t have smoked salmon because it does kill the Bacteria quite as well as traditional cooking. Normally it’s not a problem, but your body is super sensitive to it when pregnant.It stunk because I was craving it! Definitely something I would ask your midwife about on your next appointment 😊 I also realize that even though 98% of comments and advice are kindly met, but it can still get overwhelming I’m sure!
Zhizandra is right but I’d make sure that the jars were as tightly compacted as I could so as not to have to much air in them. And definitely make sure you date the jars and bags so as to first in first out to keep all the food as fresh as possible. And have the most nutrients still in them.

That's a great smoker👍 I don't want to be a buzz kill, but, and I may be wrong, it looks like you used galvanized wire on those smoker racks. There is Lead in the Galvanizing Compound that is reactive to any acids in the food. It creatates salts that are easily absorbed into the body. Stainless Steel like oven racks work fine. Just thinking of the little'n. ATB

Grandpa was a 1940'5 Sweed tuna pole fisherman, San Diego Ca who smoked the fish in a ceramic refrigerator. Yours is so much cooler!! Looking to build a hybrid, oven, smoker/bbq. Never thought of a wok. Already gathered the block for the oven/smoker/bbq just need to incorporate the wok into it. Thats soo Cool!!!

Lived for 12 years traveling via horseback. Was always transient, thus did not have the same opportunity to settle in one place and develop off-grid living with a permanent home. I am very proud of what you are doing, how well you and your wife cooperate with each other. Love your setting, and your willingness to get off-grid. Have a productive life there. And, my best to your new arrival/s.
Guys remember what I told you before the skin is high in vitamins and nutrients very good for a pregnant mommy and for growing toddler and child. Also you need a stainless steel mesh not aluminum it corrodes and very tiny pieces mixes with what your smoking and poisons you. When you use the leather wood-sling , you should put your forearm through the handle, rest it in the crook of your arm, and take the other handle in your hand. That way, the load is better distributed, less strain on your hand , AND you can put in a few more logs for the same trip...Btw, nice job on the smokehouse.
I just wanted to say,"WOW". When I watched the 1st episode I thought without a doubt you'd be headed back to civilization within 1 week. You absolutely proved me way wrong. Your building skills have come a long ways since you 1st got there. Could use a little refining but if it stands in a strong wind it's good enough. We have been off grid for 2 months now with our 5 kids and its been the best decision we have ever made. So far we have our small cabin and our small amount of animals.
Someone else’s wood smoker burnt out due to grease reaching flames in side burner setting structure ablaze in the forest. Luckily they were there during the dark night to quench it. Stacked wood next to smoke closet did not ignite. If galvanized nails kill trees I’d not include it in food prep or preservation. Love watching the milling of 30’ planks and All the lumber. Yes you are set for life as long as you are fit.
I fully understand the need to provide the food and the natural gathering as you do. I struggled to understand the lack of fishing with such a great source available. It did my heart good to see you add this to your food source. Very healthy and you are so correct for all the uses of the fish waste. Place fish scraps under your tomato plants as the native American Indians did. There will be no better tomatoes ever.
Jake I have to say, I have noticed quite a change in your muscle definition. Your muscles are so much more defined and they seem to be getting bigger..... I'm wondering if that could be because you started eating fish and not strictly plant protein. Anyway you look amazing! The reason he doesn't have a mill is because you'd have to haul those logs to the mill. So he'd need a tractor, trailer, dolly, etc. I'd have all of those if it was me.

Lived for 12 years traveling via horseback. Was always transient, thus did not have the same opportunity to settle in one place and develop off-grid living with a permanent home. I am very proud of what you are doing, how well you and your wife cooperate with each other. Love your setting, and your willingness to get off-grid. Have a productive life there. Guys remember what I told you before the skin is high in vitamins and nutrients very good for a pregnant mommy and for growing toddler and child. Also you need a stainless steel mesh not aluminum it corrodes and very tiny pieces mixes with what your smoking and poisons you. Please keep up the good work you guys are living a life I have only dreamed about. As always looking forward to your next video. Also how many more vegetable and herb and spice beds are you planning to put in and has any of your neighbors asked about buying some of your excess or exchanging some of what they have for what you don’t or even bartering for other things like homemade clothes tools, furniture or whatever if you do go that route I’d be interested in hearing about it.

When you use the leather wood-sling , you should put your forearm through the handle, rest it in the crook of your arm, and take the other handle in your hand. That way, the load is better distributed, less strain on your hand , AND you can put in a few more logs for the same trip...Btw, nice job on the smokehouse.

I just wanted to say,"WOW". When I watched the 1st episode I thought without a doubt you'd be headed back to civilization within 1 week. You absolutely proved me way wrong. Your building skills have come a long ways since you 1st got there. Could use a little refining but if it stands in a strong wind it's good enough. We have been off grid for 2 months now with our 5 kids and its been the best decision we have ever made. So far we have our small cabin and our small amount of animals.
Someone else’s wood smoker burnt out due to grease reaching flames in side burner setting structure ablaze in the forest. Luckily they were there during the dark night to quench it. Stacked wood next to smoke closet did not ignite. If galvanized nails kill trees I’d not include it in food prep or preservation. Love watching the milling of 30’ planks and All the lumber. Yes you are set for life as long as you are fit.

I fully understand the need to provide the food and the natural gathering as you do. I struggled to understand the lack of fishing with such a great source available. It did my heart good to see you add this to your food source. Very healthy and you are so correct for all the uses of the fish waste. Place fish scraps under your tomato plants as the native American Indians did. There will be no better tomatoes ever.
Very disappointing to wait over one week for the next clip to find you just combined everything together to show the same thing again.

The reason he doesn't have a mill is because you'd have to haul those logs to the mill. So he'd need a tractor, trailer, dolly, etc.
I'd have all of those if it was me.

Love Shawn James! Regarding the noise I don't mind noise I'm making. LOL. I'm lucky to back to 15K acres of forest so I only hear an occasional car once or twice a day.
