  • 6 MONTHS PREGNANT & BUILDING an OFF GRID FOREST CABIN for BABY | What We Do at Night - Ep. 145 • 6 MONTHS PREGNANT & BU...
We are Jake and Nicolle and are trying to live off the grid and sustainably in a Yurt in the Canadian Rainforest. We are having our first baby and right now we are 6 months pregnant. We are building a mini log cabin next-door to our yurt and hippie hot tub that will be a baby nursery and a holistic art, craft, and herb studio. Next step is to put in a wood stove, char the wood with fire and oil, chainsaw mill roof shingles, and decorate!

I would tell you guys that certain baby presentations (breech or Limb )at birth require immediate medical attention. If you can't predict that the presentation will be normal I recommend that you have the baby in a wooded area close to a hospital that specializes in child birth and care. I have been involved in the delivery of two babies in my life. I'm also EMT. So , this information is from knowledge and experience.

24 hours of pushing with a midwife and it was discovered that my baby was in distress with the cord around her neck. Emergency C section got her safely out. I can't believe my midwife let me go that long, I would not have been able to push the baby out after having already pushed with no progression for 24 hours. I like the suggestion to go to a birthing center and have interventions nearby if you need them. :). I wish you all the best in your decision making. Along with having a baby comes this sense of community with other mothers in exactly the same situation you are in. A birth center might give you a few of those moments where you get to talk to other new mamas. :)

      Got to chime in here.
I had some of that stuff going on too. Excited first baby mom. I had so many holistic plans and big ideas... With my 'pregnant brain' in tow. O I made my 'plans'. I'm having my beautiful six pound baby at home with a Midwife.
Coming on to eight months, I went for my bi-weekly check-up and my Dr. ordered me into hospital... For an emergency C-Section. I kindly said NO and waddled out of his office.
He caught up with me at the elevator leaving and ordered me back into his office. I waddled back in passing all the other pregnant patients in his waiting room...looking at me. He read me the Riot Act, (drew me diagrams, told me the harsh reality) and gave admission orders to the hospital and the Ultra-Sound office. By the time he got through, I was shaking and crying ... But at least I was back down to earth, and with this harsh reality that I had to have my baby by C-Section right now.
I put mine and my baby's lives and my trust in his hands. And he got us through it. He was a brilliant Dr. and thank God I had him.
Until this day I cherish that Dr. Because he literally saved both me and my baby's lives.
He took us back from the brink of that Mother/Infant Mortality statistic.
Don't want to scare you Nicolle. Truly I don't. You're doing so great. But from someone who has been there, and been through it, it wouldn't be fair if I didn't tell you to actually consider all angles and be prepared for the various eventualities.
I'm hoping you take that option of a Birthing Centre or a Home Birth (as you wish), close to a hospital and emergency OBGYN/NEONATE/PAEDS services .... to best facilitate for the various possibilities.
You'll be fine Nicolle (I always my hope). So be sure to contemplate and think this through. And aahm....don't choose that 'Under the Tree' option... :-)

Yes, life goes too fast so enjoy the moments while you can. Being blessed with child is the very best experience you will ever know. Enjoy the moments while you can and be ready as it goes faster and faster with age. I know as the facts are I am ready to be a Grandfather and it seems only yesterday that my daughter was born but it has been almost 30 years ago. This is what I mean it goes so fast and is truly a blessing to be with child.

Here in the Netherlands a lot of couples do homebirths. But here the average hospital is only 20 minutes away. But when something goes wrong that remote, you are at serious risk of either losing the baby, Nicole, or both. So please reconsider, or perhaps consider giving birth at your parents place.

I personally think it is to remote, of an area. Having a baby in the back seat of a car or at a hospital could lead to complications but what is important is if you are in a position to meet the challenges. Always take every thing in consideration. If it is Jake's first baby and he is nervous about the responsibility of having a baby in a secluded area than he should follow his instincts. It gets tough in the last phase of birthing for mommy and they need the support from others to lead the baby down the channel and a home birth depends on others getting to you. Weather might prevent midwife timely access to your home. You want everything go smoothly and to be available to overcome any obstacle that might take place not that any would. Do I have faith both in Jake and Nicolle. They are both very conscientious. We want this to be the most happy blessed experienced Jake and Nicolle and baby can experience together and lets not forget doggies, everything has to be considered. A lot for things for these two to think about. This is just my opinion and I wish both Jake and Nicolle the best of luck.

Many hospitals are respecting more natural birthing methods and helping women have the most natural birth possible with the ability to intervene if necessary. Check the hospitals or birthing centers near your family…there may be a safe, holistic offering in a familiar setting. When your in labor your focus is going to be on your body, the baby and each other. You will not notice where you are. I hate being opinionated but my daughter in law ate healthy, exercise, was strong and the baby flourished. 9 lbs 6 oz. caused issues that required urgent intervention for mom. Balance the Romance with caution. Besides your love and devotion to each other will make any place you deliver Romantic. Blessings on your family. Apologies for offering comment on your plan…shared with the utmost respect for your life choices. Congratulations

I will tell you that being near medical help if needed there are no regrets as you can’t predict if there will be issues. I didn’t find out until after my water broke that my hips never spread and I could not give birth vaginally. A remote homebirth in this condition would have meant loss. You can still have the homebirth content, just at a location near medical help if needed. Be safe and healthy. Best wishes to you and your loved ones.

I recommend changing your "home" to a place closer to medical attention, just in case. Then soon you'll be able to introduce her/him later to your amazing remote creation in the forest.

I’d like to lovingly suggest you go for a natural birth with your midwife but in a birthing center attached to a hospital or near one. (That is how I had my son.) That way you have the peace of mind to have intervention available in case something goes wrong. It’s your first baby and you just don’t know how it will go for you. You don’t want to take any risk for you or baby. Such an exciting time for you both!!❤️

Since you have not had the experience of labor and delivery before, it is my opinion that you go to a birthing center. Yes, it’s like a home birth, but you do have the safety net if you need it! Giving birth is beautiful, but it’s NO bed of roses. Believe me….I had 9 babies. Read up on the Lamaaz breathing method. You will really learn concentration breathing. Most generally, it takes a longtime for your baby to move through the birth canal, that’s why it’s called labor. And, yes, sweetie, no matter how well you are mentally prepared, it hurts! I wish you well, but please consider going into town,as you can home birth there. Good luck, Bev in Maine.

I agree with all these suggestions. I went to Lamaze, exercising, the whole deal with my first. Ended up with back labor for 30 hrs, checking to make sure he was in position until my doctor finally showed up & said he was breach (butt first) so they did emergency c-section because he was going into distress. So, you never know. 2nd was easy peasy natural, 3rd c & forth breach again with c. All boys 8-9 lbs. I'm 5'3" & looked like I swallowed a basketball so I guess, not much room for them to move around. I know some midwives are able to turn the baby around? Good luck Nicole, I just wanted give you some ideas of what could go wrong, sorry.😒

Home births are great unless you run into a problem. I was a breach baby. Everytime my mom had a contraction I went up instead of down. My daughter had the cord wrapped around her neck twice which almost choked her to death. Both my babies came early. My son, which was my first, was 7 weeks early. My daughter had to have an emergency c-section or her and her son would've loved. Like I said, home births are great if you live near a hospital but y'all don't. If something bad happens to you or your baby it could possibly be to late by the time you did get to the right help.

Advise; I had a friend that was going to give birth with a mid-wife in a bathtub birth setting, the hospital was across the street just in case... Complication happened, she ended up in the hospital giving birth. Things you have to remember, during any birth a woman can hemorrhage & choice to save the baby or the mother. There are so many things that can go right or go wrong during any birth. My Niece gave birth to a beautiful son 6yrs ago & also 6yrs ago she also suffered postpartum, as her Uncle, I went over one day to help out & found my Niece on the floor crying & depressed. I'm not trying to scare you guy's; just be more proactive, its not a hippie birth. But good Luck on birth! I know you will be great parents!

They have birthing centers across the street from hospitals. Look up the percentages of bad or sad situations before they used hospitals. Nowadays they don’t even want the baby to stay in the nursery. They want you to have the baby with you 100%. I am the ONLY sister of my sisters (4 girls total) that was able to deliver natural. And, I was the smallest frame. 101lbs5’1” delivered at 134. Easy peasy. I was an exercise fanatic. BUT, my youngest sister, a gymnast had all three children emergency plus my other two sisters same. Emergency situations with no warning. My mother had twins, no pain natural and three other births no issues. You just can’t be careful enough. Whatever you decide, many people will be praying for you….

Your baby will also be there to share in this too, and will reflect it physically, reacting especially to peacefulness, love, and welcoming feelings and emotions.
So Jake, would you tell us how you are feeling about Nicole being pregnant, and about your nascent fatherhood in one of your upcoming postings?
Nicole, you are beautiful and glowing! Perhaps the feelings of the loft suit your 'nesting' instincts?

" WOKE BIRTHS " as you call them have been a pretty big " NEW " thing since the late 70's in my experience. Nicole is strong, healthy and you have both become very well educated on natural childbirth and are aware of the signs that something may not be quite right. An experienced Midwife is good. She can turn a baby and recognize a change in heartbeat. I'll warn you, that as is common, my first labor was 24 hours and I was in a natural hormonal bliss, my last labor lasted six hours and there was nothing blissful about it until it was over! Thankfully all of our children were born perfectly healthy with the assistance of a midwife, HOWEVER, we lived in Atlanta, GA and there were great hospitals nearby. I'm not sure what choices we would have made without that safety net. I admire you both so much and love the life you have chosen for yourselves, I don't want you to live in fear of anything. So here it is! The two of you MUST THOROUGHLY DISCUSS how you will feel if in need of a DR. and a hospital! You MUST HONESTLY FACE a few facts. Healthy women must have unplanned emergency surgery to deliver their babies every day. Are YOU prepared to have your midwife do that? Is SHE prepared to do it? Is it even legal? I am sure you have both read about the many things that can go wrong and some of the thing you can do to lessen the affects afterwards. THIS IS THE REALLY IMPORTANT PART. Are you prepared to live together with loss? Will you get through it without blame? Jake, are YOU prepared to raise a child without Nicole? I won't go on. This subject is taboo. I care very much for your family, just as my husband and I care for our own. We have been together for 44 years and as you grow older and face new challenges together you will realize there are many feelings and ideas that change over the years and if you are OPEN and HONEST with each other you can withstand them all. I want all the glorious things GOD meant for you and will pray for them. WITH LOVE, MARIA.

There is always the possibility of complication with pregnancy, labor, & delivery, even among the young & healthy female population. I am a RN, NP in a busy ER/TRAUMA Center in a major metropolitan area in Southern California. Last weekend I was working as the Radio Nurse, & I ran a call for a home birth with a midwife. There was a complication after delivery which was beyond the scope of the midwife to handle. So, they called 911 & the ambulance arrived to transport the mother & neonate to the closest ER, which also had a Women's Center with Labor & Delivery. The baby was quickly stabilized en route by the Paramedics, & both the newborn & Mom ended up doing fine. However, it was a bit scary at first, because the initial APGAR score for the newborn was quite low. The baby wasn't oxygenating properly, but the medics applied supplemental oxygen via Non-rebreather Bag Valve Mask as soon as they arrived on scene, & the baby very quickly perked up, & the second APGAR was normal. The main thing babies may need at delivery is supplemental oxygen. I would highly recommend that you purchase a small oxygen cannister & a Neonatal Nonrebreather Bag-Valve Mask for the delivery--just in case. Also, I just renewed my Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, which is good for two years. I would highly recommend you both take that class, or a similar one--or, at least, purchase the PALS manual & read it. You're both very intelligent, & I feel that with some good advance preparation, plus the midwife, you'll be able to readily handle most any of the common emergencies associated with childbirth. And, I am also not saying any of this to frighten you. I absolutely agree with your decision to have a home birth, & I know everything will be fine. Congratulations to you both! Aloha, Bill

My second baby we lived 300
miles south of the Arctic Circle. There was a dirt road to the tiny cottage hospital. We had electricity but no running water except by gravity feed from a tank upstairs. No indoor plumbing and we heated and cooked with wood. I developed toxemia and was taken at night in a canoe with an Indian guide and the doctor under a tarp across the very large lake, in a storm, to the cottage hospital as the road was impassable. So just to say that having a baby anywhere is a pretty normal occurrence. My first we lived on an island in BC. The last ferry to the mainland came and went when I went into labor. An emergency run at night with the ferry captain and a couple crew got me to Chemainus in time for birth #1. Birth #3 another story. The onsie colors are beautiful. I would be concerned about allergies and dermatitis from the natural dyes. . Natural doesn’t always mean safe. I would just do white organic cotton.

Joining a birthing center relieves a great deal of disappointment of not having an in-home birth, because you are having an in-their-home birth. I am sure you are preparing your minds for that possibility. Doulas/Midwives are of wonderful support; they help guide, they can see what you both cannot see while Jake holds you. If you choose, they can have a nurse stop by to check both Mama’’s and Baby’s vitals, maybe Pop’s too if he looks like he needs it. 🤣 The nurse can draw private labs on both Mama and Baby, if requested. When you bond with doulas, you can bring them out in the future. If you have a close airlift, it is good to know the pilots and management, ask for the pilots’ numbers. You should absolutely have that information with all the jobs you do on your land, they usually live not too far from their landing station. Love watching you six, and looking forward to seeing your seventh family member join the show. 💜✨

I birthed at 🏡, cabin in the woods, 13 miles from town, i hemorrhaged as well & in order to stop the bleeding my mid-wife & one of my sisters had to do bi-manual pressure to stop bleeding while I was taken in an ambulance to our closest hospital! I lost 2600 CC’s of blood & upon arrival to the hospital, the ER DOC wasn’t there. It was midnight & I went into anaphylactic shock. I was stitched up around 1:30-2 AM, that whole time I couldn’t be with our son. He was with his dad thank GoddeSsss. I needed 2 blood transfusions. When we were at our cabin🏡 I felt like I had died but knew I was alive because spirit was speaking to me thru the white light & showing me to have faith! Anyways, this is my story & I’m sharing to bring awareness, not project fear. If you’re going to birth at home w/ your Mid-wife, I highly encourage to be sure they have all the necessary tools in their toolbox, especially a “suture kit”! Everyone has a story of their own, and even though mine was intense, I would have had another home birth had my partner & I made a conscious decision to do so! I’m super grateful for my experience & birth story it taught me to have faith in my process! Showers & blessings to your family as your journey unfolds! 👼🏹🤍

I have to be honest here. Having the baby in the yurt is a grand idea with stories to tell for years. No one should ever fault you for this dream. However, since we live in a practical world, and you both being the stars of this show, it is only fair and deeply responsible to your son or daughter and the both of you to realize that there are real issues proceeding with this plan. Frankly, I shudder to think of all the medical issues that could arise. There are so many ideas from the other messages below that you could adopt for your birthing plan. If anything should, God Forbid, occur neither of you would ever forgive yourselves. It is certainly true that nothing might happen and your birth goes off without encountering dangerous issues, but are you willing to take a gamble on everything turning out "perfectly"? I am 61, I've been around this rodeo a long while and there are two immutable facts at play here. Gamblers loose more than they win and no situation ever turns out perfectly every time. Jake, Nicolle are you willing to place the lives of both the Mother and baby in jeopardy? I want you both to be the best parents you can and to live and be happy. God Bless!

While I am mesmerized by the homestead you are building and the back to nature life you are living, I also have lived long enough to know if there is ever one thing you cannot plan out and control 100% - it is childbirth. My daughter and her baby almost died in June with a precipitous birth and the baby born with a fractured skull in a big city hospital. It was a code pink. Thank God there were specialists on the scene immediately and both mother and baby’s life could be spared. Her husband waited alone in a waiting room due to covid protocol - a terrifying experience for all concerned. Five months later baby is fine with no long lasting consequences. The huge dent in baby’s head rectified itself and the baby is meeting or surpassing all developmental benchmarks. I am beyond grateful but will never forget how different this could have turned out. Hubby was told he could lose both wife and baby. Grateful for our medical coverage in Canada and for all the medical team who were there immediately on the scene. My daughter did everything right and healthy in her pregnancy. I wish for you the most joyous and magical childbirth experience but please do not take chances.

I would take care to make sure you have a licensed medical professional present that can handle a C-section delivery if necessary (considered major surgery, so nearby staffed medical facility is recommended). Babies can have the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck during the birthing process, which will then require a C-section delivery to avoid strangulation. My son had that issue. There was no forewarning of this condition prior to labor. Fetal monitor during labor indicated infant distress, requiring emergency C-section. So glad I was in a hospital setting and my baby was healthy.

Chalice - as I wasn't there I can only speculate. However what I can tell you is my mother did not have a C section or emergency birth ... The cord was tied in a knot around my neck. Time is your enemy in that situation ... You can still have a natural birth and a healthy baby without surgery. I'm glad both you and baby were healthy that's a scary situation but ultimately that's all that matters is your both healthy

I’m an urban family doctor who trained in modern American hospitals. My wife and I decided that based on birth outcome evidence and our values that a home birth was best for us. We partnered with an incredible midwife who helped us birth both our daughters at home into warm water. We had access to a hospital right up the street should anything go wrong.

The dyed onesies are great. It's easy for a man to say he wants a home birth. lol. He's not the one going through the pain or the one that could die. Having given birth to 6 children, I can tell you that by the time you realize that the true "power" lies in surviving the ordeal with both Mother and child alive, it will be all over. The important thing is both coming through it in a healthy way. Two of mine had their cords wrapped tightly around their necks. One was sunny side up and nearly killed us both. She was the last and an emergency c-sect. Good luck. It's your choice regardless.

As an obstetric nurse (from the Netherlands, where there are still a lot of home-births with professional midwives) I would also advice you to give birth with the help of a professional midwife and quick acces to medical facilities, you just can’t know how your first delivery will go and there are risks for mother and child. I wish for you both to have a good experience!

As a father of three daughters, I really recommend having your baby in a hospital and not at your remote location. Don't take any risk, please.

Women still die in childbirth. I wouldn't want to be so remote just in case something went wrong with you or the baby. Better to play it safe and go to a birthing center or a home nearer emergency facilities if they are needed.

I've read alot of comments ... It seems in these modern times people forget how childbirth really was before modern medicine. If your not high risk find a licensed midwife in the area who's done water births and have your baby the way you feel safe with.

Amazing how so many people use this logical fallacy. People were not better off or healthier 100 years ago, the healthy delivery of a baby wasn't all but guaranteed until the last 50 or so years. With modern medicine we have all but beaten still born deliveries. This was a common occurrence prior to the 20th century before Cesarean sections, inductions of labor and ultrasounds were commonplace.

Home birth is a wonderful experience, but emergencies like a detached placenta can happen, and then the life of the baby and the mother would not survive without hospital intervention. My vegan cousin suffered this situation in January, and barely made it, despite being 20 miles from children's hospital.
Access to the hot tub will help with a free birth. You could make a temporary shelter for it. 🌍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🌍

Native Americans commonly lived to 130yrs (no hospital) before the "white man brought disease", usa life expectancy is down to an average of 78yr, which is ranked 48th in the world, very sad for a country that leads the world in $$ spent on the medical industry (grants , tuition , ins, co-pay, pharma) , also buys 90% of the worlds pharma . Dont forget all the times when a newborn gets x-rayed because "it didnt poop soon enough"(which greatly increases the chances of that baby some day giving birth to a child with birth defects) Check the nearly non-existent cancer of the amish community . Your " expensive advise is about pretentious bs" . "Seek knowledge and wisdom always , with the latter being the greater "

@@guysumpthin2974 Except they're Canadian, we have a very good health care system including well trained midwives. They have indepth knowledge in holistic methods AND medical training. They're also not stupid people. I think they'll have a home birth but at a relative's home. I've lived off grid as well. When you're aware calling an ambulance just isn't even an option, you very quickly learn to pay much closer attention to every single thing you do. Something as minor as twisting an ankle can become a life threatening situation if you're miles from your home in the wilderness where you coexist with bears and cougars.

I love the music you use (and I'm v picky about these things 😁) your channel is so chilled out to watch and helps me envision how a future positive humanity could look (imagine if teams of people worked together to put in off grid infrastructure). Was surprised that you put no insulation in the new cabin🤔 I don't know why? 💗Thanks for the effort u put in, your content is inspiring.
