This is all great, but would love a more technical idiot proof step by step of the editing process so I literally know which buttons to press if you don't mind ?
I'm literally watching this for the first time, new equipment. Butchered my first video so bad that I've had to resort to looking up this, I hope that this will give me the confidence to overcome my insecurities on making videos.
I think step 8 - color correction should be towards the beginning, after you put your clip on the storyline (before you split the main clip). That way you don't have to adjust each clip later. I know you can just copy the attributes and apply to sub-clips, but can be cumbersome if you have many sub-clips.
A great fix if you forget to do this in the beginning is to 'Nest' all trimmed clips in the time line and then you can color correct everything at once. Its also non destructive to the edits you've made.
Your video just solved a huge issue I was having.. THANK YOU. I watched 30+ videos.. and your 1st step seems simple and basic.. but dayum.. it saved me.
Thanks for the info! I've learned to not beat myself up when I make mistakes or when something didn't turn out "perfect". I try to see everything as a learning experience and go from there 😊 I get the "big" edits done first... The not-so-fun stuff completed, so I have something to look forward to when I'm done with the "boring" edits 😄 Good luck, everyone 😀
These videos are so helpful and have helped me immensely this past year. I always learn something new from these breakdowns. Great vid with helpful info !
Thank you so much! This information is great. It is overwhelming when first starting out especially since I don't have any previous experience on editing. Thanks for the vid!
Also if you have an iPhone but not a Mac book and need to transfer footage you can Mail drop the video to yourself by emailing yourself (when the file is to big it will say mail drop) but if you edit on your phone (iPhone or android) VLLO and InShot are great for editing and have amazing features like green screen add your own music pip vip etc plus nice filters
It’s like you all were reading my mind! I have moved from editing on iMovie on my iPhone to editing on DaVinci Resolve on my laptop! I have been looking for videos to simply explain in what order to edit in. For example, on iMovie, I know better then to add text until the very end after making all my cuts otherwise I’ll end up with issues if I notice I need to add things later! I would love to find a video that breaks this topic down a little better! I found one on how professionals do it with a team, I need one like that, but for someone working solo! Breaking down the timeline, like Video 1 for your A roll Video 2 for your B roll, Audio 1 for mono/dialogue…. Thank you all for everything your doing!!! Thank you!
Thanks so much! I have some trouble editing my videos and after watching this helped me so much! And for beginners don’t give no matter how hard it is just keep going!
Thank you for the sound tip - I wish more creators followed your recommendations! We usually watch RUclips on our TV, with soundbar and subwoofer. In a Condo. I can't count how many times I've either quite out of a video to save the work from switching back to the TV speaker. Especially for the bass on 'urban' music. Sounds great in a car, on a phone, but not with good TV speakers w/ Subwoofer!!!
I really like the idea of adding clips from your video to the beginning of the video! I use to think it would be too hard and require amazing editing skills but it only takes 5 seconds! Thank you!
Tips #4 and #9 are crucial!! Sometimes, I re-watch my videos again even after exporting and still find things to fix 😅 That's probably the perfectionist in me but it doesn't hurt to check several times. Also, helps to ask someone else watch it before you make the video public :)
I just want to say, your video was by far the clearest and most helpful tutorial. I’ve watched! I’m finally uploading my first video tomorrow, and following your step-by-step tutorial was a huge help!!! I’m definitely subscribing, and I need to binge your other videos!
Hey Nolan, thanks for this video! 👍 I've been editing for a few years and even though I have already been using the same video editing tips you've provided, I still find them refreshing. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! You just earned a new subscriber and friend! 😎
Dude I felt like you were describing my life at the start...parents migrated from Spain to Australia and only spoke English at home in fear I would be 50/50 in each language. If only they knew our minds are like sponges when we're young and that's the best time to learn languages. I recommend "language blend" to learn Spanish...for $10 a day or less you can have 1 hour convos with a native everyday...best way to learn IMO. Good luck to everyone on their language learning journey!
Thank you so much, this was definitely helpful. I'm in the process of starting my videos just learning all that there is to video editing before I put out my first video next week. I'm open to any pointers your might have.
Just a hunt on importing media, number them in chronological order, plus have a prefix that related to the type of media (e.g. M1 Introductory music; V1 first voice audio). This makes them MUCH easier to find later.
This video is really for me because I am going to start editing my very first video tomorrow and I see your video. Maybe I should change my name lucky lol
Thank you so much for this video!!! I’m going to start making videos soon and you gave me soooo many tips!!! Now just wondering whether I should buy a Mac or PC since I spilled water on my laptop and need a new one!!!!
thank you so much for the help ive uploaded in the past but never cut the bad parts out or did any editing cuz i didnt know how but your video changed that ill be uplading more and more now that i have this info
Nolan, I think you missed posting a link to how you shoot your first video, you mentioned it in first 30 seconds of the video, I think??? Could not find it in video description. Thank you so much for this too! 🙌🙌

I'm literally watching this for the first time, new equipment. Butchered my first video so bad that I've had to resort to looking up this, I hope that this will give me the confidence to overcome my insecurities on making videos.
I feel your pain...its a lot to learn🙏🙆

Agree with this !
You are right

I’m going through that right now
This was a great overview, even if it's not your first video! Going through and cutting out the extras really helps. I try to do it multiple times.
That’s definitely something I feel I need work on.

Great tip! Are VLLO and InShot free editing apps? I’m currently using my iPhone and edit on iMovie.
CapCut also works well.
