Hi everyone, thanks for showing so much interest in this video. I've had several comments recently asking about the quilt pattern itself so here is a link to Sandie Lush website welshquilting.design/shopping/
I can’t even imagine what price you could put on such incredible hand work. Love that every bit of it was done by hand. Thank you for the history lesson in the beginning of the video. I so wish there were some good filmmakers out there to make movies about all the master craftsmen and craftswomen who made the royal garments and furnishings and beautiful things we enjoy looking at in museums.
1. You are absolutely precious and so funny!! 2. For God’s sake- use whatever needle makes you happy! You’re the one doing the weeks of work. Not the RUclips comment police. 😂❤ So glad I stumbled on your channel. You’re wickedly talented!!
Eleanor- Please do not say that you are not a professional or not very good at quilting! Your work looks absolutely impeccable❣ It does not matter what kind of needle you use. You my dear, under-sell yourself. Stop that please. You are lovey, as is your work. Even my pooch Chica knows that. AND - We both greatly love your soothing and calm voice. Keep up the GREAT work. XXXXX😍🙂😍🙂😍 Carry on - Full Steam Ahead😉
I've only done hand quilting, and now my hands are quite arthritic, I'm learning machine quilting. It'll do for everyday quilts but when it comes to special quilts there's nothing like hand quilting and yours, in my opinion is exquisite. Your scallop edge is beautiful. Thank you from California. Your tutorial was perfect.
Thank you for this video! I'm a beginner quilter and love the whole cloth method. Your work is so elegant - and i love all the history and background you've included. I'm inspired to acquire some quilting books of my own. Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for making a video of your art and history. I love quilting but I am just realizing that hand quilting is better for me. You make it look easy.
Good morning from Melbourne. Thank you for this video. You have no idea how much it helped me, an inexperienced person, just about ready to put together and handquilt my very first humongous quilt. Thank you.
Your program has inspired me so much. I’ve been watching quilting nonstop for the last few weeks along with my crochet and needlepoint, but this is out of this world I could never do this on a machine I would only want to hand quilt. Thank you so much for being here and I hope you continue.❤
When I tried hand quilting with a cushion with my wonderful quilting teacher Eileen Swart I never could have believed how much I would fall in love with it! ❤ I hope to make a king size whole cloth quilt one day. 😊
Thank you for sharing, this was precisely the description and demonstration that I was looking for; style, method, a little history, and so on. Informative, inspiring and most of all . . . Beautiful!
That's really interesting, I tried to find reference material when I made the video, there really isn't much out there! I'm hoping to make a quilted petticoat too ☺️, good luck with yours.
@@eleanorbirchellhughes If you do decide to make one, I would love to see a video documenting the process! Your explanations are so clear ❤ I was able to get recommendations for references through an 18thc costuming group on FB; I'll try to copy the sources here later today.
This is absolutely stunning. University of Lincoln in Nebraska has an International Quilt Museum and one of the displays was whitework quilting. They had clothing and quilts from all time periods. The history and the esquisite work was mind-blowing. I love whole cloth quilts but have done them by machine. What was brought up was how many skills were lost during the Black Plague and never recovered. Again, beautiful job.
Printing the pattern to trace it through looked genius. I asked the local printer how much to blow up my 8x10 adult coloring book page to something like 55x55. The quote came back at $165!
•💟• Ooooh. How gentle, touching and lovely. This is such a beautiful expression of your gifts, talents and lovely outpouring from your creative and generous sweet heart. I definately think you should use whatever needles you like without any apologies. It has been an honor to watch this video and wish you well in my prayers. Thank you for making the efforts and for sharing of yourself with the whole world. May God Bless you. •💟•
I really enjoyed your video. As a competition quilter, I would say nothing wrong with your needle choice. I do things differently from you and others differently from me. Your stitches are beautiful and I love the design. Kudos!
Yay, a fellow "long needle"person 😊, thank you for your kind comment about my quilting, I always think I'm rubbish at quilting, but I love doing it so I carry on. If you could see some of those stitches close-up ............
Thank you for my introduction to whole cloth quilting. What a beautiful heirloom you have made. Such a good idea to start small with a cushion cover. What thread did you use, I maybe missed this information in the video.
Where where where do you get the pattern for such a large project? That is absolutely lovely! Your stitches are beautiful...& I don't care what size needle you use :))). Whatever works for YOU! Great job!!
The pattern for this quilt came from the Jen Jones museum of Welsh quilts, I think it's still available if you search 1920 Pontypridd cot quilt. Thank you so much for your kind comments about my hand quilting 😊 I really appreciate it.
@eleanorbirchellhughes How did you do the scalloped edge? Just heard of this a few minutes ago and did a search only to find the quaint old time quilts I remember! Are there any books in particular you would suggest for wholecloth quilting? How is the tacking done, does it need to be close together? I'm an avid crafter of all types. I also live in an RV. Already got my wheels turning on How I can manage to do one of these in my small space. I for one do most everything by hand especially sewing. We've lost a o many skills due to the love of high-tech everything it's sad to see. I've even started hand sewing my own clothing when I have time they last longer in my experience and I get creative outlet. Not to mention my pieces are great conversation starters strangers come up often to ask about or comment on my skirts. I'm definitely intrigued with the idear of making one of those petticoats! Thank you so much for sharing some of the old world with us!
This is such beautiful work Ms. Eleanor 💝 I'm so glad to have found your channel, I subscribed today! I'm excited to see more of your work and try it out. I'm a beginner and it seems I can't cut or draw a straight line even with rulers. I appreciate all the tips and tricks! God bless.
Jeanna Kimball pattern designer, quilter has a range of needles Fox Cottage Needles which on her youtube tutorials are long and her stitching style is similar to yours
Beautiful! I have two preprinted ones I am about to start. I love that you said it's where quilting meets embroidery. I plan on using colored threads. What weight thread do you use? I also like that your stitches are slightly large.
Loved your video. There is nothing finer or more beautiful that a wholecloth quilt. I have made one but it was preprinted. Guess you could call it "cheating". I have intentions to make one that I will mark myself and use this tutorial as a guide. I do have a question for you, though.....when you are ready to quilt do you start in the middle and work around that or start in a corner and work towards the other side? Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Ellie thank you so much for this video. I loved it. Could i ask you, it went very fast, could you do it in segments so i could follow each stage easier? Esp the scalloping?
I might do another wholecloth quilt and I'll be sure to focus a bit more on each stage. I was very new to filming when this was made and that might be all the footage we shot.
This is definitely on my bucket list to do someday. For the aquamarker, do you have issues with the marks becoming lighter in a damp climate? I'm in the Pacific NW of the US, and the water-erase markers I've used so far tend to disappear before I have a chance to get very far. Or is it not as damp in the air where you are in Wales? I also worry about a heat-erase marker going away with the warmth of my hands. EDIT: Never mind! I just got to the part of the video where you talked about it. :)
That's really interesting because I am ambidextrous but I prefer to use my right hand to sew although I can actually write and sew with my left hand. Happy quilting 🙂

you didn't mention if you ironed the fabric before beginning. Can you tell me if that is necessary? Thank you.

Hello, where did you purchase the pattern from?
Hi Nicole, the customer bought the pattern from Jen Jones Welsh quilt museum in Lampeter, it's a Sandy Lush pattern. Hope that helps 🙂
Do you use the sateen for both front and back?
