    You always make things fun. And the most fun is when you don't sweat the small stuff. You don't have to worry that everything is so perfect. Just have fun with your quilting and remember that it's a lot more fun when it's done instead of worrying that it's not going to be perfect so you're afraid to even start. Your videos are always neato!

    If you lay the fabric right side up on the batting, smooth out all the wrinkles and then pull back one half of the top at a time to spray it, it works easier and you need less room

    You've sure got one fancy-ass complicated sewing machine! LOL Mine goes forward, backwards, and zig-zag, and that's it. Yours even cuts off the thread! Wow! ;-) Trying to do buttonholes gives me fits! You have to eyeball it, and they don't all come out the same.
    I miss the old buttonhole attachment my mom's old just plain sewing machine had. It was a replacement foot affair, very bulky, about 9 inches long. You chose a metal template for the size button hole, dropped the presser foot, and let 'er rip! No guesswork, no trying to stop at just the right point, then have to shift things to go up the other side.
    (Not that any of that has a damned thing to do with quilting... ... ...pardon my ramble!)

    I envy your ability to work and move around the floor I lost that long ago.? Is the glue affected by ironing . Could ironing loosen glue if fabric is presses after attaching batting but before quilting?

    • @nutsaboutbooks
      @nutsaboutbooks 5 лет назад

      I can’t move on a wood floor like that either! I learned how to wall baste and it is a life saver. You use painters tape to tape your backing, then spray, fold your batting in half, stick half of it on and then smooth the other half over like Matthew did. I have sprayed my batting next, which does use up more spray. Next time I might take down the two layers, and tape the fabric (top or backing) up and then add the already sandwiched batting and fabric. Does that make any sense?

    My problem always seems to be sewing in a straight line. I have an old singer and it does not like to sew straight lines. Perhaps it is time to save up my pennies and upgrade to a better machine. Do you have a machine you can recommend for someone trying to get back into sewing and does not want to spend more than $300? By the way, loved the fabric it is delightful.

    • @FabricFest
      @FabricFest 5 лет назад

      If it’s been awhile since you purchased a machine, be prepared to be wowed, significant advances have been made that make sewing even more fun and amazing. If you can swing it, $500 to $700 is a good middle of the road sewing machine. People who love sewing love their machine and are fiercely loyal to it, which says to me there are plenty of excellent brands to chose from. Consider purchasing from a dealer near you if possible. You usually receive support that makes it worth it. As for a specific brand and model, this isn’t the kind of thing I would personally leave up to some Amazon reviews to decided for me. My sewing snobbery says just please please DON’T blow your precious budget on a new Singer from a big box store. Everybody’s grandmama had a Singer. They are not even close to what they used to be.

      I'd definitely go to a dealer, instead of online, or even on the phone. I'd say think about what you want to sew eg garments or quilts, will you want to quilt your quilts? I only say this as I maxed out my first budget on a machine with loads of stitches, but the harp space wasn't big ( it's hard to get machines with big harps in the UK), also the feeddogs don't drop, but are covered. The cover never worked well. I thought I'd sew bunting and bits, but discovered quilting and needed different things from a machine. If possible try before you buy.

      I had an old pfaff from the 70s which didn't like straight lines either and pulled so I bought an Elna Elina 40 ( which is exactly the same as Janome Magnolia 7330 or Janome DC2101 - they are often rebadged) on sale and oh the difference, not too fancy but has all I need and wow it is so easy and my seams are so straight!!

  • @cgriffisteach1

    I have always been told that quilting should be done from the center out. It seems that sewing the perimeter first is going to make for a bumpy, lumpy quilt.

    • @cgriffisteach1
      @cgriffisteach1 5 лет назад

      Actually, I’m embarrassed to admit I have done it. I was in a rush to finish an I Spy quilt this summer and had several bunched up squares. I don’t see a place to add pictures, but I certainly learned my lesson on that quilt. I completed seven quilts before Christmas and basted them from the center put without issue.

    • @peach.lambert
      @peach.lambert 5 лет назад +2

      @@cgriffisteach1 when you say lumpy and bumpy, do you mean all of the puckers? (like the ones you can see at around the 17:15 mark in this video, for reference) If so, that usually happens to me when I am sewing too fast and didn't baste well. In a rush as you said. I also think it helps avoid puckers if I baste from the center out and then I iron the entire thing (also from the middle out) before quilting to be sure there are no wrinkles which will cause those puckers. We learn with our mistakes so hopefully we will all be experts one day, lol!

    • @cgriffisteach1
      @cgriffisteach1 5 лет назад +1
