Us kids used to bathe in the smoke from the trash fires ( brush fires scraped up from cleaning the property) to keep bugs (deerflies, mosquitos, etc.) away. It really works! I already know what this man is saying, just from long time experience out doors. :)
In some countries that is all they do. But they use blankets so the some don't escape in away it's not really inhaled. Also it opens their pores to make them sweat releasing toxins and the sweat washes their skin.
Very much appreciated men. I used to love sitting around the camp fire then laying down smelling all smokey. Didn't know I was cleaning myself at the same time.
Smoke is antibacterial, anti microbial and works pretty good at masking humane scent for deer hunting. Man has been curing meats and hides with it forever. Makes a decent bug repellent as well . Not sure on biting black flies because they’re not common here . Great video
I was a Mountain Man reenactor and lecturer for many years and I used to love it when a class of grade school age kids would come in and someone would ALWAYS say, "I smell Bacon!" I loved doing that and the kids had some GREAT questions! I even had one young Native girl thank me for telling her about her People! SHAME ON HER PARENTS for NOT telling her!
When I go back to work sometimes people can smell the smoke on me from being out in the bush. Fires are so needy and greedy >_< Constantly hovering around it keeping it going so I can cook and boil my water. Love it! Thanks for sharing!!
Dave has a great showing in the extras dvd for the film Castaway with Tom hanks. His knowledge, skill and enthusiasm was and still is obvious. Enjoyed this. Thanks. Please get him on more as he is a wealth of knowledge and this would be a great platform for him.
I live on the Wind River Indian Reservation and smudging for all kinds of ceremonies is ALWAYS going on! Maybe not such a long smudge, because so many must do so, but, plenty of it, nonetheless!
I don't wear hats very often, but taking shoes off definitely makes handdrill easier for me. Love that smoke smell, and love that bit about fire coming from the center of the Earth, so obsidian or basalt for the ember catch.
I want to learn them! I've known about smoke baths for a few yrs now but have learnt more from this video. What wood did you use for your spindle and hearth board??
They just posted a video of my bow drill. I used sage brush for both. In this case it’s cottonwood root and Sotal. Yucca Mullen sotal and golden rod make great spindles.
My 1st survival training was in Virginia and area was full of chiggers, mosquitoes, and ticks I took smoke baths every day for 2 weeks. When I went home my skin smell like smoke for about a month my gear had the smell for a year hell I didn't have any bugs problem.
Very useful for people living in the desert. The dirt or sand is very clean except for all the mold spores and waste products of everything living in, on and above the ground.
I can just imagine some dude from the city come up the trail and see you two holding your shirts together. And straight back the way he came, never to hike again.
I ran into a couple of hikers in the high Uintas that were from NY. They looked like they walked into REI and bought everything. I was about a week deep and the lady asked where I came from and how long I had been up there and what I ate. I told her one week and I ate fish, grouse and berries. She couldn’t believe that people did that. I felt sad for her and hope she gets more dirt time in the future.
15 minutes of two dudes trying to start a fire commenting on how davi crocket they are. finally we learn for a minute and a half actual flora to use for smudging.. gotta love male ego.
People really like that hat. It’s a Stetson Gus Hat. I shaped it that way by dunking it in the river and shaping it on my leg. If you’re in Utah and you buy one I’ll shape it for you like that.
It is a great blessing to have this mentor, and a greater responsibility to continue his work.Great review bro.
You know it exactly. I’m extremely lucky.

Smoke contains formaldehyde, the same stuff used to preserve corpses.
You can also burn different types of moss that release chemicals. Chemicals that kill bacteria
Me right now in Utah: Well, my lungs are hurting from all the smoke in the air, but I will be well preserved and flavorful XD
Tell me about it. I just came down from the Uintas and it’s nasty all over
And covid free. Lol
Me is in Alabama.

We need Alan and Dave in the same video some time. Their personalities combined would be pure gold.
Now that is a good idea. I will see what I can do
Heck yeah, have Mr.Alan bring that crazy little dog of his.
Thnxs 4 sharing Tyler Tjack Survival ❗💯 🇺🇸
Dave is awesome. He's the " Gandalf White " of the American South West. Love to see more of what he knows in future videos.
Getting him on video is really hard. But I will see what I can do

Sagebrush specifically is what I use for bugs out here. Yarrow works good to
I absolutely love this channel
Thank you!
Really enjoyed that.
Wauw, never knew this. Very good information ! :D
Thank you. Very good and helpful video. I appreciate it!
I was eating while watching this.....I finished my meal.

I’m trying to get setup so we can teach next year if you’re interested
This is great! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching Kevin
Lovely Video, thank you for that lesson!
Pretty cool i never knew about this
Smoke baths work!
I do it right before a hot date!
Great video bro. The forgotten ways. We all should learn. Take care Gentlemen and ⌚ ur 6......
Very useful for people living in the desert. The dirt or sand is very clean except for all the mold spores and waste products of everything living in, on and above the ground.
Now we can smoke our fish and ourselves!
Excellent way to keep those bugs off of you. Gotta air the dogs out by the fire every night. Makes you feel like a new man
So would this method get rid of Jock itch/athlete's foot? I always wondered how the old timers dealt with that.
Good question. I think so. But I wear those sandals so much I never get it.
Amazing!
Reminds me of Tibetan lhasang ritual. They get a big fire and put in wet juniper branches to create a column of smoke.
hahahahah man holllly minute 1 - 2:30 is just EATING AND POOPING AND ROTTING. couldn't stop laughing for some reason.
Wow wow wow. What an informative video! Can't wait to try it
One of the most useful videos I’ve ever watched 👍🏼
Excellent!
Thanks for sharing
What is the wrist band that the Elder Smoky man has on? I like it. Great video. Great thing to learn. Thanks
That’s bead work he traded from a native friend of his then he added brain tan leather to it.
Wilderness Teeth Hygiene would make a good video.
I’ll make one
Rabbit brush fires up my hayfever. 🤣
The scientific name(can't remember it) for Rabbit brush transalates as smells good
Dont get too close or youll end up with a smoked sausage
Can u use lavander for this teqnique?
A long as it’s not toxic
Yup
God made dirt
and dirt don't hurt
Groovy
Indians knew all this (my ancestors included...the Cherokees! It's in the blood! )
Remember the tooth stick!
You get slammed with your intro volume !!

Is he high? That is the most vague explanation of bacteria propagation I've ever heard.
Lol
This is amazing! Plus, a bromance "shared shirt & smoke" moment!
Bromance for the win! But really he’s a mentor if anything. A teacher.
"Fire comes from the center of the earth". Yes, that is why the Bible teaches that Hell is in the "heart of the earth".
I guess setting in an enclosed building with a central fire....smudge. Smokers fingers......tar and nicotine...
I live in the mojave we have lots of sage juniper white pine and yucca it makes me feel rich when I see videos like this
You are primitive rich!

Thanks!

Is it weird that I am eating smoked salmon while watching this?.... not even grossed out by the poo poo talk smoked salmon is good
The best
TRACK please tell me about the hat you are wearing. It looks like perfect protection for Southern and Central Utah.

Bad choice as I sit to eat a bowl of cereal. The beginning....
I'm never kissing my girlfriend again.
The sound is at the limit...
Ya I need to figure out what happened with that.
First
😳
I'm watching this and imagining a breathing apparatus, like a diving pump or something.
Looks uncomfortable..
I have severe asthma.... can I just smoke my clothes and rub my skin with ashes?
Absolutely! The biggest thing to keep clean is your groin armpits and bum. As long as it doesn’t smell like BO you’re good.
@@TJackSurvival lol. Mahalo!
