A backwater valve, also known as a backflow valve, is a device that prevents wastewater from flowing up into a home from the municipal sewer system. During times of heavy rain or flooding, sewer systems can become overcharged, and the excess sewage escapes through the toilets and drains of connected homes. Backwater valves engage when sewage flow is reversed, preventing damage from sewer backup inside the home.
Installing a backwater valve is highly recommended, but can be challenging in a home that’s already finished. Retrofitting a home with a backwater valve often requires concrete removal and replacement.
Many towns and cities require all newly-constructed homes to have backwater valves installed during construction. Some cities and provinces offer subsidies to help homeowners pay for the installation.
The cost of installing a backwater valve is only $150 to $250. However, retrofitting one to an existing home can cost significantly more.
Maintaining backwater valves is quite simple: Once or twice each year, open the valve’s cover and ensure that the valve is clear and free of debris. Wearing protective gear is important when dealing with a backwater valve, as untreated sewage can pose a serious health hazard.
Many home insurance providers offer lower rates to homes that have backwater valves installed.

Great explanation. Good to know what to do and not do when the valve is in operation. Thanks.
