  • OGB presents this project by Ted Elsasser, owner of www.SouthwestSustainableBuilde... . This is a very custom home. Ted took a lot of liberties building it and broke some rules along the way.But he's happy he did because he learned a lot from it.

I can sense the sadness he has about leaving this build. It's absolutely beautiful! I think we all need to get on the program here and do better for the earth. Plus this is very cost effective and rewarding! There's nothing like creating something you use everyday. As a artist, I can truly say it's so meaningful.

This is such a beautiful home, I'm blown away! You are an awesome craftsman and I only wish I could live in a home built by you. There is such a flow in the shapes and the natural colors! Thanks for the video, Tammie Miller

Such a bitter sweet presentation. He's obviously very proud and happy about how it's turned out, warts and all. Still, it's closing a chapter of his life so he can open a new one and you can see it on his face. So much emotion bubbling under the surface but it's also very passive and subtle. Kinda like Earthships themselves. It is what it is. Every nook and cranny of this house is twenty years of memories for him, tho it may be new and novel for the viewer.

Passive cooling is great and all... but I'm starting an Earthship this spring and I'm planning on engineering an energy efficient active cooling solution built directly into a passive system -so that either may be used. I have plenty of water, so evaporation cooling seems to be my best option.
The water pump will run on 12v but the exhaust fan needs to be pretty powerful. A 300 watt exhaust fan should be sufficient. With the addition of two solar panels I could directly power the active cooling system during hot days. When I'm not cooling the Earthship - a transfer switch can direct that extra energy into a battery bank or dump load. I want to build an over-sized aquaponic greenhouse on my earthship so that I can produce large quantities of food year-round... and an indoor swimming pool wouldn't be a bad idea either =)

Beautiful place. By the way, did you ever think of replacing your beds with Murphy Beds? In my place I have only MBs and I find the space they provide when they are closed amazing. You can buy the mechanisms cheaply on line and incorporate them into your own bed designs; I even know of someone that actually made the mechanism in his shop.

This building setting works for not everyone as many folks prefer to have windows in all sides. In colder weather, windows have to be a specialty ones, that are double or even triple and those big windows are costly for sure, which has to be hallways in front part and again windows to cut hit loss during fridged night of northern climate.

Thank you to show your house. And sharing the way you live and how efficient it is. Just a quick comment. I know it’s good to filter your water. But if you get fresh water it’s is very healthy to drink specially from the ground. Too much filtration will kill the good minerals on the water... just a tip for you. 🌺

I’m very interested in building an earth berm house or earthship. I will be building it a colder climate. That being said I have always thought that the best way to heat one of these in very cold places was to build in rocket mass heaters. You’ve got all that thermal mass it only seems to make sense to incorporate a rocket mass heater into that mass to heat it. Do you know anyone who has done this? I’d like to see how that works.

And we do get freezing temps at times also. Check it out on RUclips mylittlehomestead they have two that look very nice in the homes.
