Earthship Principle 3, Greywater and Blackwater Treatment.
'Contained Sewage' means that we're treating our 'waste water' on site, before allowing it off our property.
Waste water in Earthships, is not seen as ‘waste’, but is re-used for watering plants, flushing toilets etc.
We are working with 2 Types here - 1) ‘Greywater’, and 2) ‘Blackwater.

personally I would scrape the fruit trees and food stuffs and grow normal leafy flowers and shrubs - cut them regularly to compost down into something really nutritious for your soil. but that's just me - nice video though.

I'm thinking of doing bamboo to use for trellises and fences

This is exciting. I've been wondering about both routing my kitchen usage to the septic for simplicity and also using that exterior water field for food trees. Yay I'm looking forward to getting lab results in. Has anyone gotten any tests back from fruit trees over the septic area yet? Thanks 😊

I want to build a system like this but instead of fruit tress use it to grow bamboo to use on the property for small fences and trellises to garden with and then pump that water thru a few more plant cells before using it for fruit trees

    Great new channel!
    Sub'd!
I'm a deep believer of what Mike Reynolds have pioneered and still evolving.
My 2 sticking points are the foundation and the roofing systems.

If you can create a vid for the 2 above would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Spicer -
I'll add those suggestions to the list - foundation & roofing.
My thoughts on roofing would probably be location specific. I guess I'd think in the same vein for a lot of the main earthship principles.
Looked at Ferrocement quite a lot over the last couple of years, and that looks awesome. Particularly interested in that for somewhere like Taiwan due to strength to weight ratio & ability to form domes & arches. Big logs make sense if you can get 'em. But not readily available in Taiwan as a rule.

do you have an actual set up for the black water? i hope you can show a video.

I'm up here in Chiang Rai, and am looking to change over to blackwater and greywater treatment systems, along with developing a permaculture garden out the back. I only have about ¾ Rai here, and about ½ Rai to play with. Within that I am looking to build a (almost) traditional Lahu house. We're on a slope, so am also considering adding in swales to collect rainwater.
Are there any issues or suggestions specific to Thailand which you would put forward? eg. Does hot season cause any issues, is rainy season too heavy for a shallow greywater outdoor system?
I'm a complete novice to this, but want to give it a try for a better life going forward. Thanks :)

Great video! One question though. The overflow from the septic tank feeds the outside botanical cell but what happens to the solids? Does the septic tank need to be emptied?

    • @paulgardner5928
      @paulgardner5928 3 года назад

Solids should break down in the septic tank and only liquids (or dissolved solids) should pass.
Like any septic system, it may need pumping periodically depending on how it's sized, it's usage and how well it's maintained.

Greetings from Paraguay. Great channel and videos. I would love your opinion on two things.
1- The water waste of the washing machine and dishwasher are gray or black?
2- How does a contained sewage maintenance works?

What are your thoughts of blackwater treatment on board a RV/Motorhome? I'm thinking [toilet]---[maceration tank]----[Settlement tank]----[Aeration tank]-----[Hydroponics system, (dwarf tree fruits)] Obviously the fruit will be tested before consumption. Any thought comments would be great. thanks

My thoughts on that are....it would be amazing. I have absolutely no idea how to get that working ;-)
But the first thing I would do researching a solution for an RV, would be other 'closed systems'.
Something like the habitats created to research mars bases - completely closed systems that recycled all their own water & grew food etc.
Also, working systems in space. As they are also working with a restriction on, well, space ;-) From memory, and I could be wrong.... I think NASA incinerated / trashed a lot of the solids waste, but reused water. Might be worth digging into some of what happens on the Space Station, and older units like Mir etc. (Scott Manley's channel might be a good place to start there)

Using the Botanical Cell for Fruit bearing trees sounds good, but won't the roots eventually destroy the Cell?
Since most of what I have read about these in construction, they only end up being a few feet deep (because I guess the EDPM is only 10 feet wide, so maybe 3 feet down and 4 feet wide ).

Do you have a website with information about constructing an #earthship. Sustainability Works is working on building one in the tropics of Ibadan, Nigeria. Learn more on Facebook: facebook.com/pg/sustainabilitywork/about/?ref=page_internal

Hi Idris - yes, you can hit the Earthship Biotecture website here -
      www.earthshipglobal.com/
'How to Build your Own Earthship' books by Michael Reynolds are available either there, or of course, on Amazon
The presentation I'm working on is available at interconnected.me/projects/earthships-6-principles/#earthship-presentation-slides
and is free / Creative Commons Sharealike Non-Commercial licenced, so you can do what you want with that & use it if you need to explain some of the principles to people you know.
Complimentary to Earthship Design Principles would also be books about the following -
      > Permaculture (you can get Bill Mollison's Transcripts of one of his PDC courses as a free, downloadable PDF (not the actual 'Permaculture Design Manual' - but very valuable)
      > Gernot Minke's "Building with Earth"
      > Handbook for Building Homes of Earth, by the Peace Corps
      > Soil Cement Laboratory Handbook by Portland Cement Association
      > Hassan Fathy's 'Architecture for the Poor' (don't let the Title fool you into thinking it's only for poor people - some really interesting information in there about building in Egypt)
      > Ronald, Rael "Earth Architecture". This is a beautiful book illustrating different architectural styles around the world using earth / rammed earth etc.
      > Oh - and "A Permaculture Guidebook from East Timor" is available from the PERMATIL website, free to download (contributions according to means encouraged), this, is based in a Tropical climate, so may be useful to you guys there.
      Hope that helps ;-)
