I guess it was around 2000ish or so, but I was trying to explain to my good second generation Chinese friend from college (although her parents were not, she was fully Americanized at that point) the reality of the threat the China would eventually present. However, on the other hand, I was ALSO so stupid as to support the CATO institute and other likeminded people/thinktanks who sincerely believed, as I did, that the best way to deal with this threat was ENGAGEMENT. The idea was the through the opening of markets and braking down of barriers, the Chinese would see the superior value of free markets and a free society. Man, to say I was wrong is an understatement. Is all it did was feed the dragon without changing it's nature.
Australia, consider Latin America as another possible "nest" to diversify your relationships. I was blown away to see that the Australian military thought it would be a good idea to get into a deal to take delivery of a weapon in 2050 when the possibility of your country is you could be in conflict as soon as 2022. It really doesn’t matter as China will go back to importing iron ore out of South America shortly as the iron ore mines re open after tailing dans broke three years ago.
China is also opening iron ore mines in two location in Africa so it can stop importing Australian iron ore. At present China us mainly buying the AA+ grade ore and blending with its own lower grade domestic ore to make construction steel.

The easiest answer to both stopping being reliant on China, thus reducing their power and also improving the lives of Australians is to take back manufacturing. We used to have reliably Australian made goods that may have been more expensive, but lasted longer and provided a wealth of local jobs. I know most Australians would be fine with one less TV, if it meant job security and money spent staying within the Australian economy.

Yeah, as if more guns in society helps. Statistics prove that not to be the case. China is not going to invade Australia with land troops. That's not going to happen, and even if it did, Australia is too important strategically for western powers to allow that to happen. The numbers of military and navy cited in this documentary are misleading to say the least. China's navy may have more ships or boats than the US, but the US Navy has maybe 10x the size and fire power. Western powers are also allies and the western alliance would combine to overwhelm any Chinese naval threat. Also, the 2 million so-called Chinese soldiers is nothing to be feared. Most Chinese soldiers are ill-equipped, under trained, and they have zero combat experience. And when it comes to real fighting, they have no stamina or tenacity, they break easily. It's all Hollywood for them. I think the western military forces could cope with a 5 to 1 head to head disadvantage fairly easily.
As my late D-Day veteran dad used to say, when watching young inexperienced soldiers during 'Desert Storm' shouting "We're going to kick *rse", he would quietly say "We'll see what they're like when the 'nuts and bolts' start flying!" War is not some Hollywood movie, it's the 'meat-grinder', which soon sorts out the men from the boys. I'm certainly not worried about the possibility of a conventional war, and I think this possibility is remote, but what worries me is if a gross mistake happens due to posturing, and a nuclear strike becomes a reality. That could cause a domino effect and cascade of nuclear strikes that would be catastrophic. We can't afford that kind of mistake. Once that happens, it will be too late. Game over for all of us. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).

Electrical and electronic systems are constantly redesigned as new technologies become available. They do this with aircraft avionics, with control systems, etc. I don't know much about sub-building, but the basic design is just the chassis to build upon.

The US nuclear subs were chosen to replace older diesel subs due to their superior stealth and because of the lifespan of it's nuclear fuel, which lasts the expected service life of the sub. The French subs, also nuclear, would require refueling every 10 years, something not possible in Australia due to total lack of nuclear infrastructure (banned by law). The comment that this was somehow obsolete ignores the fact that nuclear subs in the US are a mature platform and that navigation and defense subsystems are easily upgraded as needed (note the B-52 bomber, now entering its 70th year of active deployment).
