My hometown hosted these Olympics , I was at the opening ceremonies in my mom’s arms as I was only 10 months old.
1:36:19 to 2:33:00 - Whats up with the audio? Have to give a thumbs down because of poor editing. Ruined my viewing.
So much chemistry between Brian and Brian
After the first hour the video repeats but the audio continues. The audio was about bobsledding but the video was about speed skating again.
Re: the style of the narration. Up until the mid-90s, at least, voice over styles for events/documents such as this were still very much in the Modernist sensibility: sober, almost uninflected, lacking any 'subjective' emotion. It was, I surmise, meant to evoke the sensibility of the 'noble' and that the narrator was not imposing his or her emotional responses onto anything being experienced by the viewer. There was so be no seductive coercion, only 'neutral' depiction. Another good example is NASA's 'Moonwalk One' from 1970; the narration is cool, mystical, distanced - and is accompanied by music which, though in vogue at the time, seems by today's tastes, 'avant-garde' and 'weird' (i.e.: no 'heroic' Baroque trumpets, no overtly Romanticized melodic progressions). Olympic films such as this were treated as records, archives - not sportscasts, and so they demanded a far different delivery of commentary. The viewer today may not care for such a style, but should be aware that that's what it was - a style - as today's over articulated and juiced up commentary, often laced with irony, is also a style indicative of the sensibility of its time. It wouldn't be too presumptuous to assume that the narration of documents such as this produced today in 2018 will seem, in thirty years, 'dated' and questionable as to their aesthetic motivation.
I really like it - the different then-popular styles of each Olympic film add so much to them; gives a 'time capsule' feel
This was excellent. I also read the comment in the modernist voice internally.
Very well illustrated view of the evolution of spoken word in media.
I wish I could find audiobooks narrated with similar style to this. I really enjoy it.
Its much better than modern commentary. Tired of being forced to watch 'personalities' generally being over excitable and making it all about them...
the narrator of this sounds like he´s gonna say "and then they ALL died!" at any moment. spooky!
LOL so true!
Hard to believe it's the 30th Anniversary today. Time flies. Great memories and great legacies from those games. Calgary hosting again in 2026 would be cool!
Not happening.
@Ely Santos with Calgary and the oil industry struggling, there might not even be a next time.
I'll never forget as a 7 year old kid being on the side of the road with my Dad watching the Olympic torch come through my town on it's way to Calgary.
Lies again? Olympic Medals CAZOO GAZi
@@NazriB LIes? What are you talking about. I was either 6 or 7 when the torch came through Aurora, Ontario on Yonge Street. I don't remember the exact date it was over 30 years ago.
I turned 7 that month. I think I remember my parents taking my sister and I to see the torch come through Winnipeg.
I witnessed the entire event -- we put on a most heartfelt show for the world...
I was 8 years old during these Olympics and I remember them
Where's Eddie the Eagle
Thank you for sharing the video~ It reminds me of my childhood!
I came here for two reasons - the Jamaican bobsled team and Eddie the eagle. Judging by the comments looks like I'm going to be disappointed. :/
Weird as they're probably the two most talked about and remembered competitors of that years games.
