- Christian churches in South Korea are embracing new techniques and technologies to try to attract more adherents.
The reforms are coming into force at a time when South Koreans are moving away from religion. Today, more than half the population say they are non-religious.
The decline of the church is partly because it is seen as archaic and out of touch.
Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from Seoul.

many religious people rely heavily now on internet in their quest for understanding about their faith and religion. going to church seems like a taxing chore to them. they visit youtube and other electronic sources for some religious studies. but when deadly tragedy, massacre, accident, terrorism, calamity, catastrophe, pestilence, etc. happen. many of these religious folks become extra & ultra religious. they are shaking in fear, so they seek God for help in churches. it's the usual cycle. it can happen in most other countries, too.

It is actually medieval British Victorian fundamentalist church and totally different from European Lutheran. Korea is now very British influenced-British law system(prosecution cannot investigate in cases,highly punitive law system),licence plates, school uniforms, tea time, children of establishment becoming navy officers. Also, the entire peacekeeping force and their general are British Commonwealth only. Thus, Korea's wartime commander would be Queen Elizabeth 2.Also, Korean companies must report to British auditors.

Surprising. The Korean churches in the US seem to be doing well. Perhaps it is just ethnic solidarity here.
Korean Americans are probably lonely there so they go to churches to comfort themseleves lol. They look like still living in 1980s. Their language, way of thinking, facial make up, dressing fashion, everything.

Even Japan stayed true to its roots, while rising China is quickly rejecting Western ideology in favour of the values of their own civilisation.
Brother/sister you read my mind. You are right. This is exactly what my thoughts are. Westernisation was never a solution to rapid growth and civilization. Keeping true to your roots instead gives rise and prosperity. Japan and China are clear examples of it, which is why they are doing better than Korea. Buddhism is clearly their identity and I feel they should stick to their roots.

For Korea, both Buddhism and Christianity are "Foreign" religions. The same goes for Japan and China. Then Why would you say that believing in Buddhism is to find an EastAsian identity? It certainly came from Nepal and India.
I believe in Buddhism as a religion, and not as my ethnic identity. In fact, religion is nothing to do with ethnicity in the first place.
And for your information, China is a communist country, so it is beating all religions, including Buddhism. So why would you say China is better than South Korea in this matter?

I might have facts wrong but I said they were better off since I have not yet seen any religious clashes. Again I might not be accurate and I didn't say identity in terms of ethnicity but ancestral roots, but Buddhism has clearly influenced many cultural aspects and traditions of china,Korea and Japan. Buddhism was never based on place of origin but beliefs being spread and being influential. All my message says is that Koreans should preserve their true culture and stay true to their beliefs. Following US and westernization does not reveal their true culture.

As for the Westernization, obviously the Korean person above is the one that knows better than any of us, but that being said as i 've read in history it was the Joseon Dynasty who had chosen to suppress Buddhism 5 centuries ago and to encourage the spread of Christianity (Protestantism) 3 centuries ago, so that makes it literally Korea's most national religion after Animism. Wearing a suit, eating at McDonalds, listening to K-Pop are westernization, believing to God who by definition doesn't belong to anyone is not.
And to catch up with you before you call me biased, i am a Greek and an Orthodox Christian and thus i have no interest if Koreans would choose the one religion that i dont believe into or the other religion that i dont believe into. Facts still are facts.

Korea is rich now so of course they're leaving the church, creature comforts look so satisfying and easy compared to the discipline and integrity of a life with God. But only one will last forever and bring you a sense of being content, there are no shortcuts in life.

But it's an extension of the blessings already given from God. But so many churches guilt their people into giving even if they don't have it. Tithing to get from God is not biblical. I was a regular tither for years but someone challenged me about tithing 10%. When I went to look for a verse myself beyond Malachi 3:10-11 to support it, I found Paul didn't mandate it. Do a simple word search on the word tithe or offering in the Bible in the New Testament, it's very telling.
I just find it interesting that churches that demand the tithe don't encourage people to observe the Sabbath (being a Commandment) and don't keep God's feasts in Leviticus 23. They don't realise that the key to being blessed by God is keeping His commandments. Tithing or giving is the result of being blessed as a result of obedience Deut 5:29. But no one wants to hear that.

I myself and my whole entire family is a Catholic we do believe in God we do believe in Jesus some of us are suffering from anxiety from inside our minds I am suffering from anxiety and my mom she's overweight she cannot walk but she's doing her best she can to walk again that's why I want to go to the church here in America to say a prayer to help my family getting good health and me go see the world and go visit South Korea to see their church I do have Buddhism to get rid of my negative thoughts but right now I need the holy Spirit with me because I need the power of God to help me heal and help my family

Don’t listen to this man, neither Islam, Mohamed nor Buddha nor any religion can relieve your anxiety nor did they ever claim to, Jesus is the only name by which you can be saved and the only hope for you and your family to be relieved. You need to put away mixed spirituality, Buddhism will lead to spiritual oppression and close all open doors to darkness in your life and know that Jesus is a wonderful Savior and all you will ever need! @@jacquelynsaenz2111 It sounds like you feel regret, we all do but nothing can change one thing, you were made to have a personal relationship with the Creator and there is a God-shaped whole or vacuum inside your heart that nothing in this world can satisfy, money, success, even religion whether it's Catholicism or Buddhism (there is a difference between religion and personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ) cannot give you the peace you are looking for, the only thing that can give you peace is by entering into a personal, living relationship with Jesus and making him Lord over your life. Jesus understands what you are going through and even though he is God, he still entered into this world as a human being and went experienced everything that you and I do, rejection, disappointment and even betrayal but he has already overcome it all on your behalf and promises that all who believe in him and turn to him will ultimately overcome everything in this life and we can rest in the assurance and peace that he offers! Jesus says these words, "Come to me you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest, take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble at heart and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light!" Interesting. Twenty years ago I was being told that Evangelical Christianity was booming in South Korea and many saw it as a sign that Christ was being known around the globe, sweeping towards Jerusalem from the East. A large dose of apocalyptic belief wrapped in that.
I’m korean in 20s and pretty lot of young koreans are theoretically christians because our parents are. I am catholic, was also bapitized but I don’t go to mass everytime. The total amount of christians among the young koreans aren’t that much different from that of the older generation but the problem is that the young are not faithful believers. They are ‘sunday christians’
It seems like materialism is their god. Jesus Christ is real and true. I have cast demons out of people by the authority of the Lord.

Interesting argument, but the reality is that the countries with the highest happiness index are Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Switzerland and Norway, they also have the highest quality of life, lowest crime rates and are atheist countries.
