EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Sunscreen vs EltaMD UV Elements | Skin Care Face-Off

- ** Visit me at: www.brandonmayhealth.com ** The EltaMD UV Physical Tinted Sunscreen SPF 41 (lightly tinted) and the EltaMD UV Elements SPF 44 sunscreen are both phenomenal mineral-only sunscreens that offer robust UVA/UVB protection. In addition to their ability to protect against the sun, the tinted component from the iron oxides may also help protect against blue light, another source of potential stressors and oxidative damage. While both are fairly similar in their ingredient profile and ability to protect, the two sunscreens slightly differ in terms of their look on the skin.
I've been using the EltaMD tinted facial sunscreen SPF 41 for 2 years now as it is a 100% mineral sunscreen (with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that pretty much matches my skin tone. The EltaMD UV Elements sunscreen, however, is a new addition to my armamentarium of sun protection. The EltaMD Elements is a darker shade, which may be better for people with deeper skin tones or those wishing to have a more bronze appearance. The EltaMD UV Elements also has a slightly higher SPF of 44 vs the 41 in the brand's lightly tinted sunscreen, but this difference likely isn't significant.
Additionally, EltaMD's UV Elements Broad-Spectrum SPF 44 is an ounce less than the brand's UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41 while also being a few dollars more in price. Adjusted by size, the Elements is much higher in price than the lightly tinted version, but I'm not sure why (other than there being more iron oxides?). Overall, both are going to offer excellent protection, but I only recommend the lightly tinted version for people who are pale or have a lighter skin prototype and/or those who don't care about the potential cast. Otherwise, the EltaMD UV Elements sunscreen is the way to go if you have a deeper skin tone.

Great video thank you. I really like the uv elements on your skin. It gives you a bit of color. This one is my favorite sunscreen. Keep in mind that the pump will stop pumping out the sunscreen when you still have a lot in it. I have to cut mine and scoop it out and put it in another sealed jar and i get a ton more out of it.

I also do like the matte look of the other and it does appear slightly deeper tone. Trying to decide if I want to purchase the lightly tinted one to wear under makeup. I'm very light-skinned (fair-to-light). Would you say you are a Fitzpatrick 1, 2 or 3 in tone? Thanks! Will definitely tune back in!
Your comment means so much to me, thank you! I'm actually wearing the SPF 41 today; I believe I'm on the tail end of Fitzpatrick phototype 1/perhaps beginning of 2. I haven't had a suntan in forever, but I have always been one to tan quickly rather than burn. I would definitely go with the lighter tinted one for your skin type!

I didn’t hear you say but did you notice a difference in formulation besides the thickness like you said? From the video it looks like the Physical is more dewy and the Elements is more matte…would you agree with that? I’ve been using the Elta MD Restore, which is yet another one of their tinted mineral sunscreens, and I love it! I’ve been looking for one that’s slightly less dewy though…I don’t want it to be matte by any means but just a but less dewy then the Restore. I hate the feeling of silicones on my skin so I’m definitely trying to avoid that. Love the video though! Thanks for the details!
I haven’t tried either, I am almost out of the UV sport and it leaves my skin so buttery soft and smooth 😍

Hey great comparison! Just want to point out that actually the latest research and studies have shown that physical/ mineral sunscreen filters reflect only about 5% of the UV they encounter and actually absorb about the remaining 95% just like the organic chemical filters! That being said both work great and if you’re worried about the American FDA approved chemical filters lacking their stability then you can check out European or Asian sunscreens they incorporate new generation chemical filters which have a great stability and do not degrade. On the same note neutrogena and La roche posay also does a good job stabilising their avabenzone so you can Check them out in the US. Have a good day!

Love your video. BTW, the UV Elements also has antioxidants: Ester-C and Vitamin E however, to your point having antioxidants in a sunscreen is not necessarily to be relied on for efficacy.

Hey! I just looked up your channel yesterday because I thought I missed a video. Perfect timing! The UV Physical is nice but a little drying for my whole face so I use it everyday around my eyes. No burn and nice tint! And a tube lasts me a super long time! Good video!

Love this comparison. I use the Elements and also go back and forth between the Drmtlgy Univeral tint original formula. I find the Drmtlgy to never really dry down. Unfortunately, the Colorscience was too greasy for me. Cotz seems a bit thick for me. I used the Eltamd spf 41 a while ago. Luckily no break outs from Eltamd ss and I would say I prefer them but still searching for my holy grail. Love your videos and if you have any others suggestions Id love your advice. Thanks
I’m actually wearing the DRMTLGY right now. I just boarded a flight and purposefully wore this because of how moisturizing it is (to combat the dryness of the plane). Colorescience can be a bit greasy, especially in a humid climate. Have you tried the Reflect SPF 42? It’s very similar to DRMTLGY but all mineral. I hope you find your holy grail!

I love the look of the UV Elements here (specifically the matte finish), but I think it may be a bit too dark for my skin tone. Do you have any recommendations for a non-shiny/matte sunscreen that contains iron oxides but exudes a lighter tint for pale skin?
You might enjoy the Bare Republic tinted mineral SPF 30. That one is verrryyy light but still has iron oxides. It’s perfect for me. Goes on silky smooth but dries down matte.

The physical looks dreadful on my nose pores but flawless on the rest of my face (slightly drying though). What moisturizer do you use underneath because it doesn’t look drying at all on you
I'm wearing the Banobagi Milk Thistle repair sunscreen underneath. It really helps spread it out. I suggest using a good moisturizer first, letting that dry down a bit, and then trying this out. Hope that works for you!
I am sorry for another question😅. But I was wondering the significance of importance on your opinion on wearing sunscreens with high uvapf numbers? There is one RUclipsr who won't wear mineral sunscreens due to the low uvapf vs chemical ones. I personally like mineral better as I can't handle chemical sunscreen due to my skin. My question though is do you think by not wearing these high uvapf asian/European sunscreens when outdoors often....do you think I'm letting more uva rays reach my skin? Someone told me that I need to switch to chemicals asap because I'm going to age like a raisin with mineral sunscreens.
No worries! I welcome questions :) The PA rating system is definitely helpful in identifying the UVA protection you receive. I'm not sure which RUclipsr is telling you that mineral sunscreens have low uvapf. Zinc oxide covers both UVA1 and UVA2, and titanium dioxide covers UVA2. They both offer very good protection against UVA and will go a long way in protecting you while not degrading as quickly as chemical (avobenzone, for instance) sunscreens do. The best sunscreen is the one you wear, so by all means continue with mineral sunscreens. And just to be on the safe side, minimize your time spent outdoors and continue to wear your sunscreen indoors 365 days a year.
What's your opinion on layering a chemical sunscreen with a tinted sunscreen? I wasn't sure if it was wrong to layer a mineral tinted sunscreen over top of a chemical sunscreen?
That should be more than fine; I sometimes layer a mineral tinted over a chemical sunscreen. Just make sure the chemical sunscreen layer dries down completely. Since manufacturers sometimes combine chemical and mineral together in one product, the protection shouldn't be compromised.

Not at all! I suspect because it’s 100% mineral -I tend to get stinging eyes only when I use chemical or combination sunscreen. Try it out!

do either peel? do you know how they do under makeup as well?
The only time I've noticed them pill is if I have applied a moisturizer before and hadn't let it dry down sufficiently. Or if my skin is damp and I put the sunscreen on. Otherwise, they both seem to stay on smooth throughout the day. Not sure about makeup!

Does mineral or chemical have higher uva protection in your opinion?
Both are equally effective; however, they cover different ranges of UVA. Minerals like titanium dioxide, for instance, only cover a certain range of UVA rays (UVA 2), while zinc oxide offers excellent protection against UVA 1 and 2, similar to avobenzone. You should ideally have zinc oxide and titanium oxide together for broad-spectrum protection. Avobenzone, a chemical UVA filter, offers protection against both UVA 1 and 2, but it degrades quickly in light and UV, while zinc oxide is photostabile, providing longer and more durable protection. Ultimately, it comes to your personal preference and willingness to reapply often.

I've been using mineral sunscreens for years now and Chavy Chiang came out with a video saying that mineral sunscreens don't compare to chemical sunscreens with uva protection. Also said that zinc doesn't do much with block the uva rays. I was very confused due to what I've heard most people say about mineral sunscreens being better for years so your comment made me feel a lot better about my mineral sunscreens!

Good question! I don't wear makeup, so I'm unsure how well this wears underneath foundation and the like. Hopefully someone can chime in!
