An interesting note is at the end, when Mulan reveals to Shan Yu that she was the soldier who caused the avalanche, he responds by saying "The soldier from the mountain" and isn't phased at all that she's a woman. That's because in his culture, women were commonly soldiers as well and it was perfectly normal to him. Just a fun nugget of information. It's a wonderful movie.
