  • Today is the day! Finally we are swapping out the old bulkhead that looks like a sponge.
It is completely rusty and needs to go. DDS have saved the day along with Brookwells.
Ben from BHE Autos and I crack on with the replacement. Does it go well? You’ll have to wait and see.
    I hope you enjoy it!

First sentences to my heart. Owned a td4 here in germany few years ago and my family and me will keep this british iconic car roadworthy for the rest of our lives. Our nine year old Kids will get it after we passed out. The only vehicle i would change it against would be one of your spitfires

Really great work mate. Very enjoyable video to watch!! I have to replace the bulkhead on my series 3 and I’m hoping it’ll be a little bit easier than this. What a huge improvement it is as well.

Right on man. Boris is looking great. I certainly appreciate people trying to keep old iron running as I also own an older Jeep YJ. It's a 1995 and I just love it. The simplicity of it compared to today's vehicles is quite refreshing when you're facing big jobs like replacing a bulkhead. Awesome job.

Excellent. Some fantastic info in there. 'Dorothy' is at a very crucial stage of her life, where the ancent battles of heart and head are all consuming. Lots of questions being asked about chassis replacement and this moves us nicely onto the reality that the bulkhead is not great (appalling...). How much can we keep? What will remain? Side lockers? Seat boxes? Roof? Do we build a camper to rent, or turn our pet into a rag-top beach cruiser? How do we accommodate a child? WIll we add AC? Or do we move on... Yikes.

Just wondering on why you didn't replace the wiring loom with a new one? I would imagine the fuse box and some of the connections are quite rusty and would save you a job down the line. Keep up the good work though.

_Excellent_ video. It is pretty miserable to have to strip the Land Rover down like that. But at least it _can_ be done. Most classic cars, you'd be totally screwed. With the Land Rover you always have the opportunity to repair, and it's just down to how much effort you want to put in. My Land Rover is for life - provided the Government doesn't shift us all off the road altogether. So for me the effort is fine provided I can keep on chugging.

Is your chassis in good condition? Or will you be changing that too.
Also... is it worth doing bulkhead and chassis at the same time?
    Great video 👍

Thing is, there's not much point selling one Defender and replacing it with another one because it'll just cost you a heap of money, you'll inherit a bunch of new problems and, in return (at best), you'll get a very similar vehicle with a different engine.
Once you own one, and spend some money on it, you might as well stick with it.
Better the devil you know, and all that.

@@BorisTheDefender As a biker, you might appreciate this...
I bought a scruffy Ducati 916 for £2500 10 years ago. Sold it for £4000 and felt pretty good about it... until I decided I might get another one last year! 😳
      Similar thing with Defenders, though.
Whatever you paid, whenever you bought it, and however much you've spent on it, you're NEVER going to get another one for less money.

It's absolutely astounding that in all the time the series Land Rovers and their later offshoots were in production Land Rover did sweet FA to minimize or eliminate the rusted bulkhead problem. In so many ways Land Rover gave sales away to Toyota.

    • @maikstraube7083

Yep, the bulkhead was the reason I had to swap my 300tdi for a Toyota. Quote to replace was about $12k in Australia 4 years ago.

We bought 2 brand new landrover 90S in 1990 and 1991,it almost bankrupted our company.Thank god we bought a fourtrak or we would have gone under landrovers are the worst engineered vehicals ever made. They constantly broke down every day from brand new ,absolutely hopeless ,this is why farmers turned there back on landrover.

I have never heard of anyone replacing bulkhead on a car. Why do they produce rustbuckets in the midlands. Because they want to be BRITISH!!!??? I have had Soguns, Landcruisers, etc. Replacement of a bulkhead or chassis was ever necessary. Is owning a rust wagon a cult????
