- Done and done! What are the chances that my release lined up with a new episode of Freeman's Mind? How convenient! Here's a link to the Freeman's Mind Source material: • Freeman's Mind: Episod...
Hope you all enjoyed the animation! Thought I'd get it done quicker than usual because of it being half as long as the VideoGameDunkey one, but nope. This had a lot more work per scene than that video I have to say. Still got the release date though so it's all good.
HUGE thank you to Sierraffinity for the Gordon Freeman model! Safe to say if she didn't provide me with it, you wouldn't see any facial animations at all. Check out her channel here! : / sierraffinity
Keep an eye on my twitter for more announcements on my videos, and the odd shitpost here and there: / gt118

"The customer shouldn't have to be packing heat in order to finish the ride." A beautiful quote.
Although, I'd love to pack some heat, personally.
Put this on my review of the Chicago tour bus.
Imagine being the commanding officer of these men and the last thing you hear over the radio is "STILL NO CHORUS!"
WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!
I read that in the soldiers' voice, lol.
"and yea man, not only did he sing the song, he came up with a stanza on the fly while john wooing mp5's. It was a weird tuesday."
@@TheMinecraftACMan I cannot un-imagine this
@@TheMinecraftACMan lol. I imagined he saw the soldier beside him considering singing along and he just says “NO. STILL NO CHORUS. I WANT HIM DEAD!”
I recently learned this about Modern Major General, and it makes this scene a lot funnier. The lyrics to the song are all *supposed* to be dated. The information was actually basic knowledge, even when the song was created. The joke of the song is that he’s saying it all quickly so it sounds more impressive. In fact, in original productions of the play this originated from, the General would be reading from a dictionary before he broke out in song. It’s implied he was reading the definition of many of the words he was about to use in the song.
And that most of the information had little to do with actual warfare.
Gilbert and Sullivan were centuries ahead of their time in comedy. The opera this is from is from the goddamn late 1800s
There are a lot of prpdi tions of this play on RUclips... I've seen more than one where the general forgets the last line of each verse and sits there stroking hsi chin trying to come up with a rhyme, before one of his soldiers (or one of the Pirates) whispers it in his ear
I loved that part
One of the funnier ones is that he sings about being able to quote the Chorus of the Frogs of Aristophanes. The Chorus of the Frogs of Aristophanes, in its entirety, is "ribbit."
Imagine the myths that would be created from this encounter alone. If any of these soldiers survived, all they would be talking about was how their target just kept singing Gilbert and Sullivan line for line while dodging all fire and systematically taking out the entire squadron. That's how legends get started.
Garrett Carter Could you even imagine their commanding officer’s reaction to this ”status report” as he’s tearing them a new one?
Probably along the lines of this;
-NCO of the squad- "Sir! We've found the target, but he's giving us hell in a handbasket!" -modern major general being sung through explosions and gunfire-
-CO of unit- "How is one egghead in a ... Is that singing!?"
-NCO- "He's singing Gilbert and Sullivan at us while killing our guys, yes!"
-CO- "Gilbert an- he's singing that? What the hell!?"
-NCO, over tank shell- "The tank crew's got him- OH GOD WH-" -Static over radio-
-CO- "Hello? Hello? Damnit all. Why didn't I join the navy..."
That explains why he is a legend by the time of Half-Life 2! ;)
I'm also certain if any of them did survive they probably have PTSD that triggers when they see orange or hear that song
@@Gophilio4567 and why the army was so willing to go apeshit over him surviving the first encounter.
"He killed 20 men, I dont care what it costs get those tanks on the ground NOW! AND WHERE'S MY AIR SUPPORT???"
One thing I think really gets overlooked is the little quip at the end: "No, I don't need a signature, you have a nice day". The entire series is filled with snark from Gordon, but they're specifically made to pinpoint how detached he is from normal people. This one, on the other hand, is played completely straight, and it feels so cathartic because the battle that happened just proved he DESERVES to have this kind of self-confidence. Not played for either satire or horror. What a delivery.
The most overlooked part is "ooh button"
I think Ross has cemented himself as the official voice of Gordon Freeman.
KdogPrime honestly wouldn’t have it any other way
Nope
@@moistenvelopes Yes. Get over it.
Who is Ross?
@@Callsign_Bear Ross Scott, creator of Freeman's Mind. His channel is Accursed Farms, where he makes long-form videos pertaining to games you might not have heard of, as well as the aforementioned Freeman's Mind. FM is a "let's play" of sorts where Ross, instead of commentating over the gameplay, acts as the voice for Gordon Freeman. He's generally neurotic, psychotic, and overall just bloodthirsty. In addition, he really like Oxy but someone took his stash and all his shit out of his locker.
It's a good series that's technically still going with Freeman's Mind 2, which is the same idea but HL2. Uploads are slow but so worth it. You've probably encountered quotes from the series, as Ross is a comedic genius. "Coffee, coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee. Not as strong as methamphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth."
"Ok come on, sing and I wont kill you"
Would have been hilarious if some soldier randomly stood up with his hands in the air and started trying to sing nervously
Since this is based on an actual playthrough of Half Life, that would have been impossible.
It would have been a funny scene, though, especially since it's entirely likely that this version of Gordon, especially at this point of his descent into madness, would have seen the soldier standing up, shot him without a moment's hesitation then only realized after the fact that the soldier was singing the chorus then come up with a super thin "justification" for why Gordon wasn't wrong to kill the singing soldier, something like "I bet he was reaching for a poison dart in his helmet or ... no, I bet he had elbow guns in his uniform that he was trying to aim at me. Yea, because these soldiers are just walking arsenals of guns, I mean, look at the heat I'm packing just from looting their dead bodies. I'm a theoretical physicist! I've never handled a gun before in my life and now I'm strapped like a doomsday prepper in Texas just from what these goons were carrying!"
@@Dargonhuman why did you manadge to make it sound so damn near that guy's thought process.
@@thenerd1153 I wrote that after binge-watching the entire series so my brain was in synch with his.
Proably turn on no target spawn a soldier- andddd add a voice actor

I love how much pure detail is packed in this. The animations for him reloading, the ladder climb, the body floating on the water. It's all stuff that people would usually think is superfluous but it just adds so much to this. It might be your best animation yet.
Well this was the animation for modern major general doctor freeman.
It would be a disgrace if they didn't include those things
It's the kind of painstaking details that make enough sense for us to just take for granted, and yet it's the sort of details that are easily noticeable if they are missing.
Good old "damned if you do, damned if you don't".
The body dropping down to float correctly hits the bars and changes trajectory. This is art.
Remember kids: Details! They are appreciated.

@@d3athscythe575 ye i was also just checking if i understood the concept of the original series correctly xD it sure was more fun the way you thought about it
He also gargles in water. Maybe he has brain damage from the resonance cascade and can't tell the difference between an internal monologue and actual speech anymore?
I just love that he starts screaming "where's my chorus?" after they already started singing. Just another deep, complicated layer of Freeman's fractured grip on reality.
And definitely not just because the animator used a public domain recording of this song :D
This already was one of the best action pieces in the playthrough (the best was the one halfway into episode 49 with the multiple grenade dodges), but this video made it even better.

I just love his writing, Gordon basically has ADHD, or he's tripping on Benadryl (Benadryl abuse results in carrying a conversation with yourself for some inexplicable reason)
I think it's just a funny personality
I must be tripping on Benadryl all the dang time, because I won’t shut up. Even when I want me to.
I have ADHD and trust me, I talk to my self all the time but Freeman... He is in a whole different level
I always assumed most of what he's saying is his "internal monologue" of thoughts and only like 15-25% of it is actually spoken out loud. The points of differentiation seem to be when he's "talking to himself" then gets interrupted, the interruption is spoken out loud and the part that gets interrupted is internal. Notice right after the interruption is finished, his dialogue is "Now, what was I thinking about?" now "Now what was I saying?"

1:00 to 1:31 This was just perfection. The writing and voice acting. Even the fish part. This internal reflection right here is why I love Freeman's Mind and all of Ross's works in general.
Very nice syncing with the music. Also goes to show how much thought and effort went into Ross's original. He's a very good general, and this animation was very fun and playful, too. Nice job, man.
Awesome!! Also, that Ape Escape music. I feel like I just remembered a whole forgotten era of my childhood by hearing that music.

ah I was expecting the background music to turn into dubstep or something when he said 'this should be more modern'. fucking great stuff my man keep it up. I love how he is nearly a superhero but yea thats how this would probably look from the soldier's perspective.
So on his appearance on 'Conversations With Curtis' Ross was shown this video and he commented on how much effort must have gone into it, as well as how long it must have taken to make. He seemed impressed with the animation skill on display.
So take that as approval from the great one himself.

when i saw the original i thought "this is the best thing ever", with this video now it is the second best thing ever :D joke aside, great job!
My continuing headcanon is that, unlike Spartans who require augments to use any weapon instantly beyond simple training, Gordon was actually a serious gun nerd earlier in life.
He just happened to be the one in the suit that day. Even though he wasn’t prepared for its events, he was the most ready.
