Mumbai is a mess because of Nehru's License Raj and Indira Gandhi's Bank Nationalization. Because of these industry strangling moves, private industry and private sector growth collapsed throughout the country. Few people know that the Indian economy went through a remarkable economic boom after independence. And people were generally far more honest and sincere. Growth was fairly well distributed throughout the country and until the early-mid 1970s, parts of Mumbai were actually very nice. I remember Malabar Hill and Altamount Rd being as nice as Singapore. They were lovely places to live. Not a single building looked dirty or shabby. When Colaba reclamation first came up, the flats were very modern and there were no slums to be seen anywhere. It was a nice and neat area for the rising middle class, But over time, many small businesses couldn't make it work and only the Congress cronies and the very corrupt thrived. Gangsterism and crime mafias exploded. City after city went into precipitous decline. Kolkata suffered the most as the Naxals and the Communist unions made things far worse. The 1950s were full of hope. India had the potential be an Asian tiger and Eisenhower was offering India a European-style Marshall Plan and a seat on the UNSC. Idiot Nehru chose Maoist China and Soviet Russia. The results are now there for everyone to see. And millions still vote for the family that literally ruined the destiny of the nation. And now, we have dozens of clones of that family - each out to build their regional empire and keep the nation from achieving its true potential.
