Given the research and effort that went into this and the other videos you have released you would be well capable to release a full length documentary! This is some of the best work in the west chronicling the history of the media.

an extremely cool and enlightening essay, handling content like war-time anime v maturely, which many 'anitubers' do not venture to do. Beautifully done.

This was utterly terrific. As a fellow essayist, I can tell by your narration that nothing beats the feeling of dissecting the early years of an artistic medium. I'd love to one day see a video on Yoshihiro Tatsumi from you.

Why is it that Toei anime looks better 70 years ago than it does now

Masaoka and Sao drew heavy inspiration from Disney, and it shows. Their styles weren't identical to Western animation, but they were similar. I'd argue that they were about as different from each other as either was from any given Western animator of the time, or as those Western animators were from each other.
All of this builds to why I think this period in anime history is so often overlooked: It came before any of the traits which make anime its own distinct category of animation. Japan had its own unique styles, but they didn't survive to contribute to future generations of animation. They had their own stories, but while each was distinct on its own, as a whole they lacked anything to distinguish themselves from animation of the period, or even animation in general.
The birth of anime as in Japanese animation may be in this video, but the birth of anime as it is commonly discussed may not be. The first seeds of the "anime style," specifically in character design, come up about halfway through, but it still seems more like anime-tinted Disney than anime itself until sometime around Hakujaden, and the modern anime style doesn't fully come together as something widely recognized in the West as _anime_ rather than anime-_like_ until Astro Boy.
None of this is to suggest that these films weren't important; they were, to both the history of Japanese animation and to global culture in general. We are poorer for not having access to more of these. But they weren't quite the _birth_ of anime, any more than the Seven Years' War was the _birth_ of the USA. The Seven Year's War was important, and laid the groundwork for the American states to unite, but they didn't actually do so for a few more decades. I'd argue that the same is true here. Unless "anime" just means "animated stuff made in Japan," but that's the shallowest definition, and one that I don't consider very useful.

Great history lesson on the Birth of Anime. I didn't know that animators use paper cuts. It's like stop motion photography cartoon style and I can tell how much it's improved over the years to cel animation.

I have 4 part question about animation studios that you could use in a video. Why are there a ton of animation studios in Japan, why are there only giant companies and so little start up studios in the USA, what is the situation like in other countries besides Japan and USA, and lastly are any of these topics related?
