  • We're in the midst of an interesting cultural shift in anime. The last few years have seen massive changes in how anime is made and how we watch it. In this video, I take a look into those changes to see where anime might be going in the future.

The problem with digital anime is it looks too clean which makes it feel stiff or lifeless, the imperfections or so called textures of cel animation makes it feel more alive & also with the detailed shading, vivid color palettes & the rough line arts that a few animes have because of budget issues with rushed production time. Today's digital technology can replicate the looks of cel animation within a small amount of time, I really want to see a modern digital made anime look cel animated.

The quality of animation has definitely improved significantly these past few years and even decade. Animators are making better use of movement, camera angles, and of course quality traits such as smoothness. This is sort of a tangent, but I believe anime just to be another way to tell a story. Animation is one such way to tell a story, and new experimental methods of animating adds a lot not just for enjoyment but also enhancing a story. After all, those little details could be explained for paragraphs in a book, and not even to the same effect. Anime has the ability to truly "show not tell," but this also brings me to my biggest misgiving about anime for the future. The quality of story.

I’m most excited about the wave of commitment to good storytelling. ONE is an inspiration, and the fact that some like One Punch or Mob Psycho exists is so encouraging. As a storyteller and art teacher, I love to see and share things like these pieces of art, and the commentary that understands and praises them.

Honestly, I had fallen out of anime for a while, but this new digital revolution, bringing forth new ideas and some bold visions, is starting to reel me back in with a whole new appreciation for anime as an artistic medium. It's a good time to be a lover of technology and/or art, because now we can truly explore the limits of what we can do artistically regardless of medium: animation, film, music, traditional art, etc.

Easily your best video. Glad I subbed, keep up the good work. I love that you focus on the interesting, positive, and celebratory aspects of the medium while still acknowledging its shortcomings without punching down or being negative.

If anime combined the attention to detail of cell animation with the conveniences of digital animation then I think we could really get truly special work; a lot of movies use both practical effects combined with CGI and they age a lot better than movies that solely use one or the other.

Sakuga. That's a term I didn't know but I definitely love and seek out. This was a great video and made me feel a lot more optimistic than I usually feel about modern anime! If creative people like the ones in this video are able to make more great and inspired things, then we can look forward to some superb anime in the future!

also a note and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, One punch man was one of the first productions to go fully digital for a traditionally animated feature, while most anime is digital, the keys and breakdowns are almost always still done on paper, then scanned into the computer to be inked and painted, shirobako shows a great example of most of this process. one punch just ditched the paper all together, IMHO a long time coming but whatever.
