Ponyo is one of the most detailed pieces I have ever seen Its not as artsy as spirited away or princess mononoke, but the very first scene takes my breath away everytime! Its unique, full of life, the music during the climax makes me feel the pasion Miyazaki and Hisaishi felt during the process of creating it, cant describe how it makes me feel, to be honest with you. Every movie has its own magic, cant truly choose one...
Kass Ponyo is my favorite movie ever. My big brother started taking Japanese in college this year and became interested in anime. I had never been even slightly interested and thought anime wouldn’t be my thing. I was wrong. He forced me and my family to watch ghibli movies starting with ponyo in Japanese with subtitles. Best movie I’ve ever seen. Not to mention ponyo is probably the cutest character I’ve ever seen. To clarify I’m not the type of person to have a favorite movie or song but this is truly my favorite movie. I am now a huge studio ghibli fan and am going to the museum this summer. The movie was so good I got sad after watching it because it was over. Recommend to ANYONE with any taste. Trust me you will love it. I also agree with you on the first scene.
Beware that studio Ghibli isn't only a Miyazaki project. Without Takahata and Suzuki he wouldnt had the idea, the will and/or the mean to achieve that. And most of the decision either manegerial or commercial weren't Miyazaki decisions. Same, Whisper of the heart isn't a Miyazaki movie.
Sadly, that is never going to be the case, as Harem shows make MONEY. Rarely anymore, unless backed up by major studios willing to risk there existance itself, do they stray from norms. This is due to economic nessisty and not any other reason...
There still are masterpieces (or at least praiseworthy anime) coming out, though. Rakugo, 3-gatsu, Flip Flappers more recently and there are numerous 2010-2013 anime, namely Penguindrum, Shinsekai Yori, The Tatami Galaxy, The Monogatari Series, Mushishi Zoku Shou, I consider to be on par with classics like Eva, Utena, GitS, ABe's trilogy and LotGH. Also, ABe and Ikuhara are working on series, Kino and LotGH are getting a remake and we're getting 9 original series in the next season. If that is a disheartening situtation, then what isn't? Of course, money is behind everything that comes out, since the dawn of art. I deem that what we really need to focus on is being critical.
The crazy thing is how accomplished he is as an manga artist as well. His manga "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" has such an amazing world building, great art and everything else. I originally read the whole thing nearly two decades ago as a gift from my mom and it changed everything for me and til this day his work has influenced my art and illustrations.
I haven’t seen all of Ghibli’s movies, but the most impactful was by far Spirited Away. It’s the film I always come back to for comfort, because of how much I resonate with the message about growing up.
Slight correction: Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro was Miyazaki's first directed film, but not his first directed work. That was Future Boy Conan, released around the same time.
In my earlier days practicing my art, I would meticulously watch one anime movie a day, and deconstruct the artwork. Eventually I got to the Ghibli catalog, and it completely blew me away when you break it down frame by frame, how much detail is actually in there. Not to say it's the MOST elaborate of all time, *cough* Akira, but still such a wonder.
Recently, Mononoke has taken the top spot that once belonged to Howl's Moving Castle, for me. While I still like Howl, I come to appreciate his other films more as time goes on. Oddly, Spirited Away is probably my least favorite(but I still love it).
Kinda basic but my favorite is princess mononoke. Great video, also could you consider doing a Osamu Dezaki overview in this vein. He's the best anime director nobodies heard of
This. If anything, Dezaki shaped modern anime with his use of cinematic techniques and his harmony shots (aka Postcard Memories), which are still being incorporated even today.
I feel you should do a video on anime influences outside of Japan. While I understand you couldn't put everything in the video, one important (or at least I feel) aspect of Miyazaki's influence is from outside sources, especially from one man, Jean Giraud, otherwise known as Moebius. If you take a look at Moebius' artwork alongside Miyazaki you can see a lot of similarities, especially with Nausicaa's glider and a short comic by Moebius called Arzach.
Admittedly the only story I have read is a short story called "The Long Tomorrow", which I highly recommend. But yeah, his artwork is one of the most influential styles of the entire comic book medium. A channel I suggest checking out, despite being a little abrasive with his opinions, is the Rageaholic, specifically his "Top 5 Recommend Comics" video where he goes into a little bit of detail of French comics influence on Japanese media. Edit: Just remembered, Silver Surfer Parable with Stan Lee. Another good read.
I remember watching a video of him criticizing Ghost in the Shell for ripping off Blade Runner the fact that he could do that while knowing Long Tomorrow exists and ignoring that... well that's pretty much sums the man up. If you have the means check out The Incal and The World of Edena they are excellent recently got these hard cover releases of both lovely stuff.
Cagliostro his directorial debut? No way. Miyazaki's, and Takahata's, works on TV are criminally overlooked and as or more important as their works on the big screen. My favorite (Ghibli) movie must be Kiki, and my maybe second favorite Whispers of the Heart was not directed by him.
Words can't describe how much I love Miyazaki's work. Every frame could be a stand alone piece of art. I would give anything to be able to draw like the animators at Studio Ghibli.
This is FANTASTIC!!! So incredible! Just WOW! Thank you SO MUCH for making this wonderful video, AnimeEveryday! I'm going to show it to my mom, as she, too, loves Ghibli!
This is my favorite of your videos, I've watched it twice now. It's an absolutely excellent tribute to Miyazaki, and one of the most informed and comprehensive of it's kind.
My favourite Miyazaki film is The Wind Rises. My favourite moment in a Miyazaki film is when the robot warrior hands the flower to the two heroes on Laputa. Thank you for your hard work, I enjoy the videos you make very much.
I started with Kiki's Delivery Service. I watched it on VHS at my nana's house when I was little; no idea what age specifically. Later I saw Spirited Away since it won the Oscar in 2002, a year a favourite animated movie of mine was also nominated- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. I had to watch the movie which beat the movie I was in love with as a kid. I then fell in love with Spirited Away and was totally okay it beating my horse movie hahah bought some of the manga/graphic novels for Spirited Away and the rest is history.
My favorite has to be Mononoke. When i first watched it i didn't really know about Ghibli or Miyazaki, but the moment it ended i just had to start watching them all and learning about the studio's work.
I went woth my mother to see "The wind rises", but I didn't tell her anything about it. When we were about to enter the cinema, she saw the poster and told me, enraged: "you are taking my to watch an animated film? A cartoon?". When the film enden, she told me: "This was incredible! Pure poetry!" Thats's te power of Miyazaki.
i think my favourite hayao miyazaki film is kiki's delivery service but my fave SG film is whisper of the heart! yes!!! another video. pu-raise anime. (but seriously, you're basically my fave youtuber!)
Miyazaki is great but the person who truly should be evaluated is Osamu Tezuka. I would say that he was the very first man who inspired the world of comics and animations in Japan with various kinds of philosophies or some great messages. Tezuka was a surgeon and survived air raids during his adolescence. All of those his experiences formed his views of life and death and these are reflected in his a lot of works. By the way, I like Mononoke the most. The music, descriptions of nature and the plot.
you forgot one "The Cat Returns" unofficial sequel to "Whisper of the Heart" Unofficial because Hayao Miyazaki did not do sequels but sometimes reused characters
As much as I love the movie, I sometime wish Miyazaki would come back and make a series that more follows his original manga, because wow that manga was wild.
Whisper of the Heart was written by Miyazaki but the director was Yoshifumi Kondo, Miyazaki and Takahata’s protege. He died 3 years later from an aneurism.
So how did he change Anime? You asked that in the title but didn't bring it up in the video at all. Miyazaki didn't change anything, the rest of the industry is the same as it was before him, with all the issues that caused him to leave it and make his own studio still there.
I think it's more that he brought some small stylistic changes as others tried to imitate and replicate the success of his works. If you look at those that came after him, a lot of Ghibli stuff, and Tezuka a lot of it is just trying to mimic them and what they did. But they're honestly missing the point and not creating something memorable. That's the problem with 90% of what I've watched since getting hooked on Miyazaki. People are creating some really really good stuff, but it's simply not memorable at all other than the fact I enjoyed it. WHile Miyazaki/Ghibli films I can go on and on about and still remember most plot points even if I haven't watched in forever. It's strange but it's a sad truth about the industry, even if the stuff is still more enjoyable(IMO) than most animation that comes from other countries including my own USA. Maybe one day it'll change but who knows?
I usually love your videos but this one... not so much, I don't think there was much of a through-line especially in relation to the title, it also lists off milestones in his career without giving them proper context like the development of the Nausicaa Manga for Animage his meeting Toshio Suzuki the then editor who is criminally underrepresented considering a lot of the achievements with regards to studio management are his. I think it's very telling that your research was from personal context, articles and various forms of online documentation, whenever you do get to a part of his career that is better represented by these sources the video benefits from it, I'd recommend you check out "The Art of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Watercolor Impressions", "Starting Point 1979-1996" and track down "Yasuo Otsuka's Joy in Motion" to get a greater understanding of his career, I think you're a talented writer and video editor and with better sources you could make some great videos sorry for being a nitpicking shite.

Nice analysis. Been rewatching some of these films recently and I agree with the progression they have. One correction: Whisper of The Heart wasn't directed by Miyazaki. While he wrote the screenplay, it was directed by one of Ghibli's top director's at the time, Yoshifumi Kondo. Kondo was pinned to a successor to Miyazaki and Takahata, but alas, he died from a heart attack. It was commonly attributed that his death was caused by overwork, and influenced Miyazki to take it easy later on.
can we talk about the background art in kiki's delivery service?? its a HUGE step above every other movie in this video and no one is talking about it. why? who made them and how??
Great video!!, you should also make one for Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon. (if they already exist then i guess i will watch them since i'm marathoning the videos one by one :) )
Nausicaa hands down for me. His entire body of work is fantastic, even those with flaws like Ponyo IMHO but Nausicaa has this unique combination of audiovisual flair and storytelling that is overwhelming. Everytime I hear the opening theme , I get emotionally moved big time.
nice synopsis. thanks for the video. just a correction at 9:40: miyazaki did not direct whisper of the heart; he wrote the screenplay and only directed the flying sequence. it was in fact directed by kondo.
My favorites list changes every couple months and right now its: 1.) Howl's Moving Castle 2.) Spirited Away 3.) Princess Mononoke 4.) Porco Rosso 5.) Only Yesterday 6.) My Neighbor Totoro 7.) From Up on Poppy Hill 8.) Whisper of the Heart 9.) The Wind Rises 10.) Kiki's Delivery Service 11.) Nausicaa 12.) Grave of the Fireflies 13.) The Cat Returns 14.) Ocean Waves 15.) Ponyo 16.) The Tale of the Princess Kaguya 17.) Castle in the Sky 18.) The Castle of Cagliostro 19.) When Marnie was There 20.) The Secret World of Arrietty 21.) Pom Poko
Really amazing video, a very great take on Miyazaki's life and impact over the world of anime. Also, I'd like to ask you guys *what is your top 5 ghibli movies and why* ? :) Mine are Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa, Whisper Of The Heart, Spirited Away & Grave Of The fireflies.
I have seen that old anime movie but under it's English language title Panda and the Magical Serpent. I have the DVD that came out back in the $1 DVD years from back in 2006. Found it at Walmart back in 2006 along with Kimba the White Lion and an anime version of Thumbalina that had a character that looked alot like Jirachi.
I love Miyazaki's works, they are unlike anything else. I tried to go see Totoro in theater's a while back but they sold out. (Who gives Studio Ghibli movies a small theater. That is totally not cool!) But it's okay because that taught me to buy tickets ahead of time and I have. Now I'm counting down the days until I get to see Spirited Away on the big screen.
AnimeEveryday I have to say it's poniyo I might be a bit biased though because it was the first studio giblie movie I watched, not only that but I watched it in theaters when the dub was released in America, I was 8 and the time and that movie got me into anime I fell in love with Japanese animation in general because of him.
I need to take a weekend and marathon all the Ghibli movies someday.
Don't. Savour them!
I’ve done it - it was the best weekend ever. Highly recommended ahaha

Howl's Moving castle is by far, the most memorable for me. The soundtrack will forever be etched in my mind.
Miyazaki is a great director, but it was actually Yoshifumi Kondō who directed Whisper of the Heart!
Miyazaki was a true story teller. That's why he's remembered to this day.

Exactly, Miyazaki only wrote the story.
Yes, he did.
Yes. He died afterwards and Miyazaki considered retiring because the stress had pretty much killed Kondo.
Yes true, his one film.
After Kondo's departure, Miyazaki took over directing too, besides storyboarding and writing the screenplay.
For some confused, Whisper of the Heart was not directed by Miyazaki but he did write the screenplay. The director was Yoshifumi Kondo.

just a correction at 9:40: miyazaki did not direct whisper of the heart; he wrote the screenplay and only directed the flying sequence. it was in fact directed by kondo.

He's Alive!!!
Excellent. Thank you
i'll love this video as long as i'll love Miyazaki's work: forever.
Spirited away
Ghibli: hi
Western audiences: *iLovEYoU* 😭
Really, really well done. I'm not sure which Miyazaki film is my favorite. Wind Rises? Porco Rosso? Nausikaa?
Leave a comment with your favourite Hayao Miyazaki film!
AnimeEveryday Spirited Away!
AnimeEveryday I have to say it's poniyo I might be a bit biased though because it was the first studio giblie movie I watched, not only that but I watched it in theaters when the dub was released in America, I was 8 and the time and that movie got me into anime I fell in love with Japanese animation in general because of him.
Princess Mononoke
Definitely Porco Rosso. Hands down. I basically cry every time I hear this: ruclips.net/video/Gpr_ISfWFsk/видео.htmlh43m21s
Castle in the sky
Really well done!
My parents got the dubbed Spirited Away disc when I was a kid. That was some trippy shit but I loved it way before I started watching anime normally
My favorite Ghibli movie is Castle in the Sky, followed a close second by Kiki's Delivery Service.
